XAVER VARNUS IMPROVISE FOR THE CANTERBURY HIGH MASS BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY
A rare souvenir from the past: Xaver Varnus accompanied Kodály's Agnus Dei with the Tomkins Choir and improvise (from 6'42) during the Communion of the High Mass in the Canterbury Cathedral, celebrated by Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, and in the presence of the British Royal Family, in 2004 October. For archive purpose only it was filmed by an amateur clergyman with an old video camera. Earlier that week Mr. Varnus had a great solo recital in the cathedral, organized by the Canterbury Festival, and he was engaged by the Archbishop of Canterbury to improvise during the next Sunday's High Mass.

Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, Germany. Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper).

Montefiore Synagogue Ramsgate Open Day 2007
THE MONTEFIORE SYNAGOGUE AND MAUSOLEUM
Moses Montefiore (1784-1885) was a towering figure of Victorian England, renowned locally, nationally and internationally. The grandson of wealthy Sephardi London merchants originally from Livorno in Italy he retired from the Stock Exchange a rich man to devote his life to philanthropy. He gave generously locally: his mayoral gold chain is still worn by Ramsgate mayors. Nationally he worked for removal of disabilities for all dissenters; he helped establish the non-denominational University College London. Internationally he most famously fought for and helped financially his co-religionists abroad in times of persecution and established a new suburb and industries for impoverished Jews of Jerusalem and of the Holy Land.
He first came to Ramsgate in 1812 on his honeymoon with his wife Judith Cohen, sister-in-law to Nathan Rothschild. After his first visit to Jerusalem he bought, in 1831, East Cliff Lodge with its grounds, now George VI Park. The pious and observant Montefiores immediately expressed their intention to build a synagogue as a private `chapel' on their estate. David Mocatta, a cousin, was hired to design it.He was the first Anglo-Jewish architect, a pupil of Sir John Soane and architect for railway stations on the Brighton Line. Mocatta estimated the cost at between £1500 and £1600 exclusive of the interior which was to cost £300 and £400. The foundation stone was laid on the New Moon of Tammuz (Leo) 5691 anno mundi (1) or 9th. August 1831 in the presence of large numbers of the family; terra santa[sic](2) was placed where the Ark with its scrolls would eventually stand.
It was on Sunday the 16th. June 1833 that the dedication of the synagogue took place.
The Chief Rabbis of both the Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities were present, leading a large and distinguished congregation from all over the United Kingdom.
`The simple building is based on a rectangular plan with canted corners plus a semicircular apse at the back to accommodate the Ark. It has whitewashed stucco walls and a lead roof. The clock on the façade, an unusual feature of synagogues (the most famous being that on Prague's baroque Jewish Town Hall) is inscribed in English with the motto TIME FLIES. VIRTUE ALONE REMAINS. The chiming clock is the only example in an English Synagogue.'(3)
This clock has marked the time for numerous Ramsgatonians, speeding many a schoolboy late for school. Sir Moses Montefiore's arms, by the side of the entrance, are from the now demolished Judith, Lady Montefiore College; they were placed there after 1960.
`The interior: Semicircular stone steps (at north) lead to a tiny vestibule with a marble washstand. The interior of the small prayer hall was originally dimly lit from above by an octagonal dome and lantern of clear and red glass, a feature typical of the Regency, and by a tiny window over the Ark now filled with a stained glass Decalogue. Only later were windows introduced at gallery level. The classicism of the tapering Ark is modified by the lotus-bud capitals, which give it a slightly Egyptian feel.
Other alterations to the interior have somewhat compromised the restrained neoclassicism: the cream, pink and grey granite and marble lining the walls (in 1912), replacement and rearrangement of furniture (by oak in 1933; the Reader's desk is now in the centre) and the introduction of iron gallery supports and stained glass (also 1933). The gallery faces the Ark along the west wall and has a traditional high latticework mehitsah (*). In 1933 the original timber Royal Family prayer board was replaced. It can now be seen at Bristol Synagogue' (4)
The present Prayer for the Royal Family is for King George V and Queen Mary.
In the lobby there is a memorial to a member of the family who was killed on active service at Gallipoli during World War I.
The synagogue is lit by candles in their original brass chandeliers, as at its parent synagogue Bevis Marks in London. Sir Moses' own seat by the Ark is still to be seen as is that of Lady
Montefiore's in the women's gallery (no.3).
The Montefiores travelled widely and visited the Holy Land seven times. The suburb built outside the old walls of Jerusalem, `Yemin Moshe' (the Right Hand of Moses in honour of Sir Moses) had a distinctly English flavour, and one might say even a very Ramsgate flavour: the ironwork is from G S Culver's Ramsgate Metalwork factory and the windmill was based on the Hereson flour mill. It was built by Messrs. Holman, engineers and millwrights, of Canterbury.

Heritage Destruction in Christchurch - Cranmer Courts day 30
Friday 2 Nov 2012, day 30 of demolition - Cranmer Court building
MORE INFO BELOW
Continued from Day 29:
Nipped in to rescue some broken stone. Remember that fountain I mentioned on day 23? Here it is. Cracked in two represents the... Water running over the clean slate represents... (Work it out yourself, it's meaningless, like CERA's demolition, so it can represent that.) Being the middle of the day, I decided not to try the reverse fountain.
Time for a crackpot conspiracy theory (yes, my other posts are factual and verifiable and await challenge). Tinfoil hat on.
Gerry Brownlee is of a devout Catholic background, he taught as a woodwork teacher at St Bede's College, a Catholic community.
Shortly after the Feb 22 earthquake he said: Quite frankly people have died in this last earthquake trying to save old buildings. We're not going to do that any more. My absolutely strong position is that the old dungas, no matter what their connection, are going under the hammer.
But in an apparent about-face, on 5 March 2011, he said if he had his way, most of Christchurch's heritage buildings would be demolished but that he would like to see resources go into rebuilding the ChristChurch Cathedral, the Catholic Basilica, the Canterbury Provincial Chambers and the Christchurch Arts Centre -- but that's it ... They won't be put back the way they were.. Considering it was common knowledge the Anglicans were growing out of their cathedral (the Bishop soon applied to have it demolished), while the Catholics just quietly got on with preservation and restoration - doesn't that seem awfully convenient?
Earlier 2012 he also said it was interesting that Christchurch had identified itself with the [Anglican] cathedral. That's a great thing, but is it that cathedral, or is it the fact that we have a cathedral in the centre of the city? I'm not able to work that out myself in any strong way. Hmm fishy.
Mecca suffers heritage destruction too, one problem is stone-carved names of previous empires embarrassing the current authorities. Christchurch has those evil looking gothic buildings. I wonder if he feels a sense of embarrassment in having the symbol of the antichrist at the very centre of the city?
Having just checked out Wikipedia, I am all-knowledgeable in these matters: Cranmer was a dude at the centre of a battle of wills between the Catholics and Anglicans in the 1500s. His last official words were: And as for the pope, I refuse him, as Christ's enemy, and Antichrist with all his false doctrine.. This went down poorly with the Catholic authorities, and he was taken and burnt at the stake immediately (his intention). Crap storm ended in Rome losing its grip on Britain, and labelling Queen Elizabeth a servant of crime after she took on Cranmer's rule book.
Interestingly, Cranmer Court and the Cranmer Centre have gone under the hammer with the Anglican Cathedral set to follow. The Arts Centre, Museum, various other stone gothic buildings, and the Catholic Cathedral look likely to be spared the wrath of the authorities. (Or should I say authority, because there is only one man with total control.)
So possibly the biggest noose around Cranmer Court's neck was simply its name - given to it only after it was strengthened in the 1980s, a name that comes from the Square it looked onto. However, words like Cranmer (or antichrist perhaps) drag with them a powerful heritage, a volatile accelerant for this centuries old war.
FYI I'm absolutely not religious, in fact I'm bordering on an atheist (however my religion* prevents me from being one). *By religion I mean personal philosophy. I'm a scientist at heart - not some grunt who blindly props up the body of scientific opinion (is that represented during conference by baked carbohydrate product washed down with a dash of ethyl alcohol?) - but one who seeks facts and does not want to believe. But ultimately every experience and thought is subjective, so this presents rather a curly paradox, however my religion of believing in the lack of belief itself covers that one nicely.
In our daily lives we all have one foot on solid ground and the other foot on nothing, so why should I want to believe any different?
Now that I've offended or scared pretty much everyone, tin hat off.
Actually, I'm so uncultured, I'd think a Roman cathedral is a large building able to wheel about on its own (at least just the dome). And an Anglican cathedral should do double duty as a protractor (or at least an equilateral triangle).
What's happening sounds more related to the Brownlee family's longstanding feud with the building industry (which itself has ties to Cranmer Court). The Church of England is effectively on the same side as Catholics catholic and reformed, so that was all a bit of a spat at the end of the day. (And after I wrote this a month ago, the fortunes of the Catholic and Anglican Cathedrals seem to have reversed - for now anyway.)

Music written in occasion of the Old Boys reunion in September 2011 using the Abbey School song. The work is written using musical forms from various periods - starting with modern classical and passing to jazz and finally a contrapuntal Baroque ending. As no copies of the original Abbey School song could be found, even this was written from memory. I am sorry if it does not appeal to all listeners but moving through various musical forms and styles is a recognition of the musical culture given to us by the music director Ian Cox his assistant Keith Cole, and the Rev. Stephen Holford OSB.

Ten Years Ago On Youtube Lost Little Girl
THIS IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE INCIDENT AT MASSENA ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY -- JOHN
Massena is a quiet city in upstate New York. It sits beside the St. Lawrence River across the water from Canada. The Jewish population of Massena is small and supports one synagogue. Massena seems an unlikely location for a major event in American Jewish history, but it was.
In 1928, a blood libel accusation against the 100 or so Jewish residents then living in Massena tore the city apart. Blood libels have been a part of Jewish history at least since 1144, when the Jews of England were accused of having purchased a Christian boy --the child martyr, William of Norwich—to torture and crucify him. At the heart of the blood libel is the charge that Jews murder Christian children to procure their blood, or more rarely their internal organs, to make matzoh at Passover. Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the Canterbury Tales, accused the cursed Jewes of infanticide in The Prioress's Tale. The myth of Jewish ritual sacrifice persisted through the centuries and occasionally resonated on the fringes of American society, no place more openly and angrily than in Massena, New York.
On erev Yom Kippur, 1928, the New York State police brought in Rabbi Berel Brennglass of Massena's Orthodox congregation Adath Israel for questioning. Four-year-old Barbara Griffiths of Massena had disappeared and Albert Comnas, an immigrant from Salonika, Greece, charged that, as the highest of Jewish holy days was at hand, the Jews of Massena might have kidnapped little Barbara and ritually murdered her for her blood. The police interrogated Rabbi Brennglass for more than an hour about Jewish practices in respect to human sacrifice and the use of blood in food. Fortunately, during the interrogation, Barbara emerged from the woods where, having become lost, she had spent the night in the tall grass.
Her reappearance did not fully calm some townspeople. They suggested that the Jews had released her only on discovery of their plot. Choosing to believe this was true, mayor W. Gilbert Hawes organized a boycott of Massena's Jewish-owned businesses. Massena's dismayed Jewish community leaders called on Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, chairman of the American Jewish Congress, to intervene. Wise called on his friend Al Smith, New York's governor, who was running for president on the Democratic ticket that year, to speak out in defense of Massena's Jews. Smith assured Wise that while he could do nothing about the mayor's actions, which were not under his jurisdiction, he would make certain that the actions of the state trooper in the case were thoroughly investigated.
The incident ended during the next two or three weeks. The New York Times picked up the story and made it a national event. Mayor Hawes, a Republican with his eyes on his pending re-election campaign and apparently under pressure from the national Republican Party, issued a public apology. His statement read in part, In light of the solemn protest of my Jewish neighbors, I feel I ought to express clearly and unequivocally ... my sincere regret that by any act of commission or omission, I should have seemed to lend countenance ... to what I should have known to be a cruel libel imputing human sacrifice as a practice now or at any time in the history of the Jewish people. Hawes was reelected for a sixth consecutive term.
Historically, blood libels have not been leveled exclusively at Jews. Ironically, the early Christians were purported to practice infanticide and baby eating. Perhaps this was a residual charge associated with the Jewish origins of early Christianity. The Spanish New World explorers justified their conquest of the Central American Indians because the Aztecs performed ritual crucifixions at Easter (a logical impossibility, since the Aztecs knew nothing of Christian history). As recently as the Bosnian war, Serbian militiamen accused their Muslim opponents of crucifying and decapitating Christian children and floating their corpses down the Drina River.
However, the blood libel charge has clung consistently to Jews for at least a millennium. Moreover, that it could arise in the United States in the twentieth century gives pause. As Rabbi Brennglass reminded his congregation at Kol Nidre services in 1928, We must forever remind ourselves that this happened in America, not tsarist Russia, among people we have come to regard as our friends. We must show our neighbors that their hatred originates in fear, and that this fear has its roots in ignorance. ... We must show them they have nothing to fear from us. We must tell the world this story so it will never happen again.

Presented by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik at the 2018 Conference on Jews and Conservatism on November 10, 2019.
Theologians and scholars of the Hebrew Bible have long argued about the historicity of the Exodus, the authorship of the Torah, theodicy, and much else. But all agree that long ago, a small group of people appeared in history to declare that they had been chosen to play an extraordinary role in the world. Because of that declaration, the nations of the world would pay special attention this chosen people. The nations of the world would love them, and the nations of the world would despise them. By blessing the descendants of ancient Israel the nations of the world would be blessed. By cursing the descendants of ancient Israel, the nations of the world would be cursed. Israel—ancient and modern—has always been a small nation, but it has always been at the moral and political center of human affairs.
Am Yisrael Chai—the Jewish people lives—is a fact, but what is the theological meaning of this most improbable miracle? Rabbi Meir Soloveichik of Shearith Israel and Yeshiva University’s Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought examines how Jewish history itself illustrates God’s enduring providence.
