The Alte Synagoge in Erfurt, Germany, is one of the best preserved medieval synagogues in Europe, its oldest parts dating back to the late 11th century. Most parts of the building date from around 1250-1320. It is thought to be the oldest synagogue building intact to its roof still standing in Europe.
Since 2009 it has been used as a museum of local Jewish history. It houses the Erfurt Treasure, a hoard of medieval coins, goldsmiths' work and jewellery found in 1998. It also has facsimiles of the Erfurt Hebrew Manuscripts, an important collection of 12th-14th century religious texts that belonged to the medieval Jewish community of Erfurt.
The Historic Synagogues of Europe project, carried out by the Center for Jewish Art at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has given the Old Synagogue, Erfurt its highest level of significance rating: 4 (International) - The building is of outstanding architectural, urban or historical importance. It has unique features and/or is especially influential internationally as an architectural pattern. In 2015 it was proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Old Synagogue was opened as a museum on 27 October 2009. The museum permanently houses the Erfurt Treasure, a hoard of 3141 silver coins, weighing 24 kg, and over 700 pieces of goldsmiths' work and jewellery that is thought to have belonged to Jews who hid them at the time of the Erfurt massacre in 1349.
One of the Erfurt Manuscripts is the Tosefta, part of a compilation of oral law, or oral Torah, attributed to Jewish scholars called tannaim, who mostly lived in Palestine from about the year 0 CE until c. 200 CE (0 - 200 AD). Not all scholars agree, but it is generally thought to provide interpretation of unclear sections of the Mishnah, Judaism's primary book of Jewish legal theory.

It is located in the center of the city and the memorial center was founded in 1980 and is accommodated in the pre-war Jewish community's synagogue. The synagogue was finished after a two-year construction period in 1913. It was originally consecrated as the Neue Synagoge (New Synagogue). Today the building is one of the largest, best preserved and architecturally most impressive testimonies to Jewish culture in pre-war Germany.

I came across this remarkable Synagogue, now museum in what was the former East Germany. At various times it was a restaurant, warehouse, and even dance hall for Nazi soldiers! It has been restored to museum quality and lets hope it stays that way now

More than golden treasures: The Heritage layers in Erfurt Synagogue Museum
Thanks to their decision not to restore its original form, conservators present a series of historical uses for the synagogue in architectural layers. Therefore, we may gain a broader picture of what the building has been through from the eleventh-century up to now.

An Impression - Erfurt's Jewish Ritual Bath
The Old Synagogue features a medieval mikveh, a type of Jewish ritual bath. This was unearthed during excavation works in 2007. You can view the ancient mikveh bath in this video.

In Memory of the Jews Of Speyer, Germany (synagogue & mikveh)
I produced this video of the ancient and historical city of Speyer, Germany. Historical records from the Holocaust tell of the former inhabitants of the ancient city- It is believed that Jews may have lived in Speyer pre-Christian times. In 1084 the Bishop invited the Jews to settle in Altspeyer and had the area surrounded by a wall for their protection. Remains of the ancient synagogue and mikveh can be viewed today.

Erfurt is a city in the central German state of Thuringia. Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation, was ordained in the Cathedral of St. Mary, whose origins date to the 8th century. Next to the cathedral is the Gothic Church of St. Severus. The Augustinerkloster is a monastery where Martin Luther lived as a monk. The Krämerbrücke bridge has medieval houses and shops, and stretches over the Gera River.
Erfurt, Thuringia's capital, is one of central Germany's most beguiling and significant cities. Holding its head as high as the former capital to the east, Weimar, it's a wonderfully preserved medieval city of grandiose churches, cobbled market squares, captivating museums and miraculously preserved architecture. And, as a university town, its contemporary culture is anything but backward-looking.
Straddling the Gera River, Erfurt was founded by St Boniface as a bishopric in 742, then propelled to prosperity in the Middle Ages as a major centre of the woad trade. In 1392 rich merchants founded the university, allowing students to study common law, rather than religious law. It was here that Martin Luther studied philosophy before taking holy orders. With most of its historical centre spared destruction in WWII, today's Erfurt proves that modernity and history can coexist gracefully. The city's appearance honours its medieval roots, while adding often classy, sometimes quirky, contemporary flourishes.
With over 200,000 inhabitants today, Erfurt was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and has many beautiful old buildings and parks. Its university was one of the oldest in Germany, before it shut down early in the 19th century, but a refounded incarnation dating to just after reunification claims the old and august tradition.

Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia and the main city nearest to the geographical centre of Germany, located 100 km SW of Leipzig, 150 km N of Nuremberg and 180 km SE of Hannover. It lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin within the wide valley of Gera River, a tributary of the Unstrut. To the south, the city is surrounded by the Steigerwald forest.
Throughout the Middle Ages, it was an important trading town because of its location, near a ford across the Gera river. Together with the other five Thuringian woad-towns of Gotha, Tennstedt, Arnstadt and Langensalza it was the centre of the German woad trade.
Erfurt has preserved an intact medieval city centre. The city is known for its two churches, Erfurt Cathedral (Mariendom) and Severikirche, which stand side by side and together form the emblem of the city. Both churches tower above the townscape and are accessible via huge open stairs called Domstufen. Another remarkable site is the Krämerbrücke, a bridge crossing the narrow Gera River. The bridge is covered with 32 inhabited buildings. It was built in 1325 with a church on either bridgehead, one of which, the Ägidienkirche, is still functional. The Augustinerkloster is an old Augustinian monastery. Martin Luther studied at the university and lived in the Augustinerkloster for a few years after 1505. The eleventh century Erfurt Synagogue is thought to be the oldest synagogue building still standing in Europe. It is now a museum displaying the Erfurt Treasure.
Martin Luther attended the University of Erfurt and received his bachelor's and master's degrees of theology there. Luther lived there as a student from 1501 to 1511 and, as a monk, from 1505 to 1511.
The city is the birthplace of one of Johann Sebastian Bach's cousins, Johann Bernhard Bach, as well as Johann Sebastian Bach's father Johann Ambrosius Bach. Bach's parents were married in 1668 in a small church, the Kaufmannskirche (Merchant's Church), that still exists on the main square, Anger.
The University of Erfurt was founded in 1994 and is thus the youngest public university in Germany. It sees itself in the tradition of the historic University that had been there from 1379 to 1816. The historic university is regarded as the oldest university in Germany.

Erfurt: Schlussstein der zweiten Synagoge entdeckt
Erfurt, 20.09.12: Ein wenig war es wie bei Indiana Jones bei der Stadtmünze. Gegen 10 Uhr begann die Freilegung eines behauenen Steines der in einer Mauer eingebunden war. Aufgefallen war er bei den Grabungen nach der 2. Synagoge Anfang September.

Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia. It lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin, within the wide valley of the Gera river. It was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and has many beautiful old buildings and parks.
Erfurt - Germany is quite compact so walking is often the best way to explore the city. Regular tram services run all around the city, with service intervals of at least every 10 minutes during most of the day. The trams are less frequent in the evenings. Night buses are available throughout the night to bring you home after midnight. They run once or twice every hour and meet at the very heart of the city center (Anger) or depart from the main station.

Much of Erfurt's charm is found in its narrow streets, many of which are pedestrianized, with their beautiful old houses, green areas and little bridges across the Gera river and the Stadtpark and the Nordpark on different sides of the city center.

In the tourist office you can buy a small guidebook in one of several languages that leads you through the city along the main sights.
Garden lovers can find many things to do and see in Egapark], which is a huge and beautiful botanical garden and accessible by the Straßenbahn. Check out for any exhibitions or programmes.
Relax at the Wenigemarkt or behind the Krämerbrücke beside the river and have a beautiful look at the old houses standing on the 'bridge'.
Take a walk around the Stadtpark just near the main station and see the green side of the city.
Watch a play in the recently-renovated Erfurt Theater
