Small but ancient this is one of the oldest areas in Europe, at roughly 7,000 years old.

Gmunden Old Town, Austria
Located at the north side of Traunsee, Gmunden is a historic town with a population of around 13,000 - a figure which has remained more or less constant over the past 150 years. Its wealth was due initially to the salt trade, later also to the ceramic production which still exists today. It was walled although today the walls are gone we can see in places where they were. As a tourist destination it offers a great deal such as Schloss Ort, a lake castle, hiking in the nearby mountains including use of the Grunberg cable way which was recently constructed, tours on lake Traunsee and a well constructed cycling route around the lake.
The attached film shows the history of the town and explains what can be seen there.
Hallstatt Salt Mines in Salzkammergut Austria | Hallstatt Saltzwelten
The following video will highlight the fun and education tour through the Hallstatt Salt Mines.
The Hallstatt Saltzwelten is located just behind Hallstatt. You will need to catch the Salzbergbahn funicular to the top where the fabulous skywalk is located. You can purchase a combo ticket for both the funicular as well as the mines at the bottom.
From here, it’s a short walk through picturesque scenery uphill to the mines.
The tour is very worthwhile and is loads of fun. Did you know that the Hallstatt salt mines are the oldest salt mines in the world!?
The guided tour lasts for around 70 minutes and is available at half-hour intervals.
The Hallstatt salt mine price includes extra perks like the tours of an age-old burial site, the Heritage Skywalk tour, two museums, a hike to the High Valley and much more.
Make sure to wear closed shoes as well as warm clothing as it can be pretty chilly in the mines.

My Visit to Hallstatt: One of the Most Beautiful Towns in Austria
During my road trip across Europe I spent one night visiting the beautiful small town of Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region of Austria.
The village of Hallstatt is located on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt and it has become a wildly popular tourist destination.
While many people go on a day trip to Hallstatt from one of the nearby cities, it's actually worth spending the night. This will give you a much better experience exploring the small town free from all of the tourist crowds. Spending one or two nights will also give you the opportunity to enjoy more of what the town has to offer and you could even go hiking or relax by the lake without worrying about missing anything.
There are quite a few interesting things to do in Hallstatt and it's definitely one of the most beautiful small towns in Austria that you could visit. One of the best way to experience the town is to just walk around and explore all of the different streets and passages that you come across.
What I love most about Hallstatt is that it's a mostly car free village. This means you don't have to constantly keep an eye out for cars while you're walking around. It also helps to keep everything quiet and cleaner so you have a better experience visiting Hallstatt.
The town is easily accessible by public transportation or if you're driving you can park in the large parking garage just outside of the city center. Many of the hotels offer a shuttle service and it's also very easy to walk wherever you might want to go.
Overall, I would definitely recommend visiting Hallstatt if you ever get the chance and I can't wait to return in the future to spend more time exploring this beautiful Austrian Village.
Keep up with me online!

The best of Salzburg and Hallstatt in winter
Travel video vlog about our trip to Salzburg and Hallstatt in winter 2018.
Day 1 - Arriving In Salzburg
It was mid January when we left Zurich in Switzerland to catch the OBB train across to Austria. We had booked the first class panoramic train which goes directly from Zurich to Innsbruck and then in Innsbruck would catch another train to our destination: Salzburg. Due to the heavy snow on that day, the panoramic train was cancelled in part of the journey and as a result we had to take one extra train and one bus to reach our destination. Instead of doing our normal planned route (Train: Zurich - Innsbruck - Salzburg), we were advised to take the train from Zurich station to a nearby station in Switzerland (about 1 hour away), then jump on a bus which would drive us for about 40 minutes to another train station, and from there we would then catch the Panoramic train to Innsbruck…
Upon arrival at Innsbruck station, we had missed our connecting train to Salzburg and we had to wait another hour to catch the next train heading that direction.
The total journey took us 7 hours and we arrived in Salzburg at around 4 pm that day.
Located in the border with Germany, Salzburg is an Austrian city with gorgeous views of the alps that is divided by the Sakzach river (on one side is the old city and on the other is the new city).
We stayed in Salzburg for three nights and from there we also did a day trip to Hallstatt.
On the day we arrived we headed straight to explore the old town. Despite the cold weather, there was no sign of snow anywhere in the city. However, as we woke up on the following morning, it had been snowing all night and the city was then completely covered in snow, just magical!
Day 2 - Exploring Salzburg in the snow
That morning we headed to the Museum der Moderne on the Monchsberg. We were not able to access the museum because it was closed that day, but we were able to access the museum’s rooftop which has amazing panoramic views of Salzburg’s old town. Totally worth the trip! The best part is that because it was snowing, we were the two people there. I guess that’s one of the positive things of travelling in winter :-)
Later that day, we also took the funicular to explore the Fortress Hohensalzburg, which also provides magnificent 360 views of the city, as you can see in the video. This is another place that if can’t miss if you are in Salzburg.
Day 3 - Exploring Hallstatt
We rented a car for our day trip to Hallstatt. We left early in the morning and we stopped to photograph some places along the way. The scenery in winter is just beautiful in that region, so I highly recommend doing that trip by car if you get a chance.
Hallstatt is a village on Lake Hallstatt's western shore in Austria's mountainous Salzkammergut region, filled with 16th-century Alpine houses, small alleyways and also many cosy cafes and shops. The village of Hallstatt is also protected by UNESCO and it is home to the oldest salt mine in the world.
Hallstatt is very small so it can easily be explored in a day. We only had about 5 hours there and we felt it was enough time to explore what the village had to offer. The skywalk, which is a route that leads you to a high point where you can see panoramic views of the village, was unfortunately closed when were there because of the snow, so we spent our time there strolling its small cobblestone streets and admiring breathtaking views of village and the mountains.

W obecnym filmie oglądamy dalsze ciekawe miejsca lewobrzeżnego Salzburga, ale też przechodzimy w rejon katedry, aby zobaczyć go z innej perspektywy.
