Sibiu, Romania - My Visit to a Transylvanian Gem

A video of my visit to the Transylvanian city of Sibiu, Romania.
In 2007 Sibiu was designated as the European Capital of Culture and is ranked as one of the most idyllic places to live in Europe.
The first record of Sibiu comes from 1191 and during the 14th century it rose to prominence as an important trade center in the region.
For the Germans who were sent to settle the Transylvanian frontier, known as the Transylvania Saxons, it was their most important city. It wasn't until after World War 1, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved, that Sibiu officially became part of the Romanian state.
Today, Sibiu is one of the best places to visit in Romania and one of the most beautiful cities in Transylvania. It has been wonderfully preserved and it's like taking a step back in time as you walk through the narrow streets and stare up in awe at the architecture of the Old Town Square.

Sibiu, Romania - The cultural capital city of Europe
Sibiu, one of the most beautiful places I have been so far in Romania. The old town is one of Romania's hidden gems. Rich in color, architecture and a pleasure to get lost in.
Before going into my next location, Sighisoara, I had a few more hours to spare in Sibiu, so I decided to roam around a little bit more in the old town.
I woke up early on Sunday morning and walked towards the town, it's really chill outside and quite. Perfect time to take some nice architecture photos without tourists and locals in in the way.
I have discovered some beautiful places, little colorful narrow alleys which are perfect spots for photography. While admiring these places I realize what a beautiful country is Romania. I can't wait to discover more in the year to come.
The silence was broken by a warm big bang bell sound from the cathedrals around the old town. People are slowly showing up, greeting each-other on the streets and are gathering in their church congregations.
I stop at the Christmas market once more to grab something to eat and following it up with a good Starbucks coffee, although I am not a Starbucks fan...it was perfect for to boost my energy in continuing my journey.
Sibiu, it was a pleasing and satisfying place to visit, totally recommend it.
I am taking the train to Sighisoara, the city I have been waiting to see for such a long time. I am extremely excited.

Romania Travel Guide - Visiting the Historic Town of Sibiu
Take a tour of Town of Sibiu in Sibiu, Romania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sibiu, situated in the heart of Romania, is a large city with a historic foundation.
It is divided into two main sections: the older Lower Town and the Upper Town. The old town dates back to the twelfth century and still has buildings from that time.
Sibiu was once a fortified city and some of its walls and towers still stand.
The Upper Town is newer and features the Grand Square, named for obvious reasons.
The city has a great collection of museums and medieval buildings, and is quite beautiful.
The Christmas Market in Sibiu, Romania
Sibiu, voted the European Cultural City in 2007. It's a beautiful city in the heart of Romania. It’s known for Germanic architecture in its old town, the legacy of 12th-century Saxon settlers. Around the city are the remains of medieval walls and towers, including the 13th-century Council Tower. In the upper town, Brukenthal Palace now houses the Brukenthal National Museum, with European paintings. The nearby Evangelical Cathedral has gravestones in its walls.
I am really exited about exploring Sibiu in specially now during the Christmas Holiday.
It was a bit of a journey for me, I left around 9am from Zalau to Cluj and from Cluj another 5 hours till Sibiu by coach.
I have arrived somewhere in the afternoon, just in time to catch some daylight and also to enjoy the Christmas lights.
Beautiful city, you dont need a tour guide or a path to walk, because everywhere you look it looks amazing. Brilliant old architecture, well preserved building, it feels like going back in time.
Every click you take with your camera it will turn out to be a stunning photo.
Just like in any Christmas Market the presence of good food is there, lively atmosphere and cool light-shows.
After spending a couple of hours in the city centre enjoying the lights, food and the old town, I walk to my Airbnb drink a good coffe and well...I am getting old, I did manage to fall asleep. By the time I walk back to the city, the market is slowly closing down, I am really disappointed in myself but, lucky enough I have time the next day till 12pm to explore a bit more the city in daylight so I am happy with that.
A destination where I will surely come back again, Sibiu is my favorite city so far.
As per the Christmas Market it is in the top if not the best Christmas Market I have seen so far.
Tomorrow I will be heading towards Sighisoara, but before that I will explore the city a little bit more, so make sure to SUBSCRIBE cause the details of the stunning old town in Sibiu is yet to come.
Thank you for watching.

After the excitement of driving the Transfăgărășan Highway I stop by the city of Sibiu to learn a little about its history and to take a walking tour around the two main areas - the upper and lower towns. Connected by a series of tunnels, steps and narrow passageways the historic centre of Sibiu is a mixture of quaint marketplaces and grand central squares lined with restaurants, coffee shops, churches and halls.

Sibiu - Romania // One of the most beautiful European Capital of Culture ???
Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, Romania, with a population of 147,245.Located some 215 km (134 mi) north-west of Bucharest, the city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. Now the capital of Sibiu County, between 1692 and 1791 and 1849–65 Sibiu was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania.

Formerly the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons, the old city of Sibiu was ranked as Europe's 8th-most idyllic place to live by Forbes in 2008.
The city administers the Păltiniș ski resort.
The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191, when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time.[5]
In the 14th century, it was already an important trade centre. In 1376, the craftsmen were divided in 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German name Siebenbürgen (literally seven citadels).[6][7] It was home to the Universitas Saxorum (Community of the Saxons), a network of pedagogues, ministers, intellectuals, city officials, and councilmen of the German community forging an ordered legal corpus and political system in Transylvania since the 1400s.[8][9] During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became the second- and later the first-most important centre of Transylvanian Romanian ethnics. The first Romanian-owned bank had its headquarters here (The Albina Bank), as did the ASTRA (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Romanian's People Culture). After the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted status in the Habsburg Empire from the 1860s onwards, Sibiu became the Metropolitan seat, and the city is still regarded as the third-most important centre of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Between the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and 1867 (the year of the Ausgleich), Sibiu was the meeting-place of the Transylvanian Diet, which had taken its most representative form after the Empire agreed to extend voting rights in the region.

Sensational Sibiu
Romania
4th - 5th July 2011
We stayed at Casia Baciu in Sibiu, very convenient for the old town. We wandered around the squares, had some interesting meals and heard two excellent piano concerts.
To read about our stay in Sibiu:
European Region of Gastronomy 2019 - Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania
Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania is the 2019 European Region of Gastronomy. It was granted this title because of its unique and amazing food, specifically its traditional cured meats, its variety of cheeses, its incredible breads. We got an AirBnb in the old town for 5 nights and experienced as many of the Sibiu specialties as we could. Food like gogosi, a deep-fried bread stuffed with meat and cheese. We ordered the lower half of a pig's leg, which was salty and rich with flavor. We even tried some 'normal cheese'. One of my favorite meals came from visiting a local deli where we bought sliced meats, including their special bacon. A simple lunch in our apartment that consisted of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, a brined cheese similar to feta, deli meats, and bread. That's a lunch I could eat everyday, especially in Sibiu.
Sibiu also has a beautiful old town. It was recently restored and is currently looking pristine. The city consists of an upper and lower old town, as well as a new town, which we even ventured into to find a cool little restaurant in the cellar of a house.
The current president of Romania is from, and was once the mayor of, Sibiu. He is ultimatley responsible for making it the incredible tourist attraction that it is today. Go there, see it, and eat it.
