Zurich, Switzerland: Old Town walking tour
Zurich's Old Town extends about five blocks in from both sides of the river and stretches for about a mile. The right bank of Zurich, or east side, of the river has the larger cluster of old buildings and is considered the prime district for visitors. Much of your day can be devoted to exploring its many little side alleys and shops. Zurich is one of Switzerland's great cities for walking.
Exploring ZURICH Old Town | Switzerland Arrival Day
Our first day in Switzerland!! We dropped the bags at the hotel and set out to explore the Alstadt or Old Town of Zurich, including the charming, winding streets of Niederdorf, the Grossmunster, and a panoramic view from Lindenhof. Standing by the Limmat with all the church towers striking noon was magical. Stay tuned for more!

Visitors can take pleasure in this great lifestyle, enjoying friendly, efficient services while exploring many fascinating sights. With just under 400,000 people in the city proper, Zurich is an ideal place to stay -- especially when you consider the main visitor attraction, which is a beautiful Old Town of cobbled lanes lined with historic buildings and numerous fine shops and restaurants. It is delightful to wander in this large pedestrian zone that is filled with enchanting little alleys which lead through an ancient town that was founded during the Middle Ages. With the right strategies you can see this slightly expensive city without spending a fortune. It’s an easy city to cover on foot, which is always the best and cheapest way to see any historic town.

Zurich Old Town Streets (Altstadt)
Zurich's Medieval houses, contorted, narrow lanes and guild and town halls from the Renaissance period offer an attractive backdrop for world-class entertainment. A tour of the Old Town lets visitors experience Zurich's multifaceted past. The backdrop turns into a living history of characteristic buildings and the people that lived and acted out their lives in them.
The double towers of the Grossmünster (Great Minster) are Zurich's landmark. According to legend, Charlemagne built the towers at the location where the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were discovered. Further sights worth seeing include the Peterskirche (Peter's Church), which has Europe's largest clockface, and the Fraumünster (Minster of Our Lady), which is known for its stained glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall.
The historic heart of Zurich, the Altstadt, or Old Town, remains the most atmospheric part of the city, with its striking 19th century buildings and winding cobblestone lanes hosting an array of modern cafes, shops and galleries. For visitors to the city, the Old Town makes the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour of Zurich, sprawling along both sides of the River Limmat and home to many of the city’s principal tourist attractions.
Zurich's two landmark cathedrals—the medieval Fraumuenster (Church of Our Lady) and the Gothic style Grossmuenster—make navigating the Old Town easy, perched on opposite sides of the river and linked by the monumental Munster bridge. From here it’s an easy stroll to the charming Niederdorf district, crammed with quirky boutiques and hip coffee shops; the famous Bahnhofstrasse, one of Europe’s glitziest shopping streets; and many of Zurich’s top museums like the Swiss National Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. The Old Town is also the center of Zurich’s nightlife, with dozens of bars, restaurants and nightclubs dotted around Niederdorfstrasse and Limmatquai.
Zurich's Old Town is everything you would expect from a historical heart of a city, but also of a lively center of modern-day life. It is characteristic by its pedestrian-only streets, paved with cobblestone and lined with picturesque houses, some of which have been standing here since the Middle Ages. Take a stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere, or sit in one of the many local restaurants and cafés and just relax.
Some parts of the historical quarter, such as the Lindenhof, have been built on an area, where human settlements are documented since as early as the 1st century BC. The buildings you can see here are of a much later date, though. The oldest ones have been built in the 13th century AD.
If you aren't much of a history buff, the Old Town may still entice you. There are plenty of places to enjoy the night here and a bustling nightlife, as Altstadt boasts the highest concentration of clubs per square meter in the whole of Switzerland.
i want to see old town zurich
A nice view from ETH on Zurich. A short video with a view on the old town of Zurich. The biggest city in Switzerland.
Zurich,
The largest city in Switzerland. Not the capital of the country. However, that financial and administrative capital. And even then it is not really a big city for many people. Located on the Zurich See. This is where the Limmat flows through the city. At the start, the river divides into 2 parts. Because of this there is a small island on which the old city is located. A small part of the old town is also on the right bank on the other side.
The highlights of the old city are:
Grossmünster. According to legend, the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were found here. They refused to give up their faith and were beheaded. The church was built on this site in the 16th century. When it was built it was a Catholic church, later it is a reformed church. The stained glass windows and a baptism are the most beautiful. You can reach the tower with 187 steps. Then you have a view from 50 meters. Costs chf 5 .
Wasserkirche. Right next to Grossmünster is this small church. It is not on the official card as a highlight. However, just walk in. To the right is a staircase to enter the crypt. An old crypt with low ceilings and excavations. Here is the stone on which Felix and Regula are beheaded
Fraumünster. Built in 853. A former monastery. After the reform, the rights were transferred to the city. Entrance is chf 5. The church and its windows are beautiful. At the rear is a passage with beautiful frescoes. It is a small resting point with a fountain. This section is free and definitely worth admiring.
Saint Peter's church. The oldest parish church in the city. The walls are from the 9th century. The timepiece of the clock is the largest in diameter 8.7 meters.
There are many nice little streets in the old town. From where you will arrive at a nice square again. Strolling through the city. Certainly the Augustinergasse walk. A beautiful street with old stones and houses with beautiful facades. Lindenhof. The heart of the old city. A quiet park. It is located higher up so you have a beautiful view from the side. Especially good view of the river and Grossmünster. Also nice to sit and enjoy the sunset.
Bahnhofstrasse. The shopping street of the city. Almost a mile, 1.4 km long. The more you walk from the station to the lake, the more expensive the stores become. A bit down the street is the Paradeplatz on the left. The financial center of the city.
Niederdorf and Oberdorf. On the right side on the bank of the river. A pedestrian zone. During the day with many small shops and in the evening with many restaurants, cafés, and terraces. In Niederdorf, Cabaret Voltaire is also the birthplace of Dadaism.
Uetliberg. A mountain just outside the city from where you have a beautiful view. 871 meters high. Accessible by train.
The city has several various museums such as FIFA World Football Museum, Kunsthaus Zurich, Swiss Finance Museum, Clock Museum etc. Where I have not come to i.v.m. the time but I wanted to visit was Im Viadukt. Just north of the center. A place with restaurants, boutiques and galleries.

Switzerland-Zürich (Old Town) - Episode 1
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history.
Bahnhofstrasse is Zürich's main downtown street and one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping avenues. In 2011, a study named the Bahnhofstrasse the most expensive street for retail property in Europe, and the third most expensive worldwide.
