Welcome to my three-minute film of the sights and sounds of Konstanz in Germany, taken while I was still getting used to my new Nikon P900 Coolpix digital camera. This is a university town on the western shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German), close to the border with Switzerland. If you like traditional historic architecture, the variety of age and style in Konstanz’s buildings should delight you.
The famous Romanesque cathedral alone exhibits elements from several other periods: the Gothic and Renaissance styles are there, and the theme continues in the Old Town (Niederburg); just walking the streets looking is a popular pastime, and no wonder: the frescoes on the Town Hall and other buildings make the Old Town into an open air art gallery. About halfway through the video there are some modern buildings, co-existing happily with their historic neighbours. Mozart (who else?) provides the soundtrack, along with some background street noise and at times, birdsong.
The later part of the movie was shot down at Konstanz’s lake-side gardens and port. Here I get a chance to show what the Nikon can do: as the excursion boat leaves Konstanz, I zoom out with the P900 from 2,000 mm (83x optical zoom) to just 24mm, and the ship becomes a tiny dot in the far distance.

The Niederburg is an urban district with narrow, winding streets and houses from the Middle Ages in the district of the old town of Konstanz on the left bank of the Rhine . The Niederburg is located south of the Seerhein and is framed by the Rheinsteig to the north, the Konzilstrasse to the east, the Paradies district to the west and the Münster cathedral on the south by the Konstanzer Münster.
The Niederburg below the residence of the bishop to the Seerhein was inhabited by craftsmen, fishermen and small merchants. Among them were servants who were liable to pay bishop. Furthermore, canons of the bishop lived here. Part of the buildings were destroyed during the city fire of 1355. The alleys are crooked, so that enemy fire could be stopped.
In the Brückengasse 1 is the former church St. Johann. Further in the Brückengasse are the Dominican convent Zoffingen from the 13th century and the Spitalkellerei Konstanz. West and peripheral in the Gerichtsgasse is the district court . East and peripherally the city theater Konstanz lies .
The houses from the Middle Ages are recognizable in the maze of alleys by their names and dates . The Rheingasse leads to the former Rhine bridge with the Rheintorturm. The Inselgasse connects with the Dominican island . The houses in Niederburggasse are from the 15th century. In Konradigasse 3 was the former cathedral school.
In Niederburg, restaurants and wine bars have been preserved in old walls. Furthermore, the Niederburg is a location for special crafts such as upholstery, violin making and lead glass window workshop. Specialty stores and retailers offer exquisite products.

Lying on picturesque Lake Constance (or Bodensee in German), Konstanz has been a city since the first century AD, later gaining prominence as a religious center and then as the site of the only bridge crossing the Rhine River. The Old Town is one of Konstanz’s main attractions and is home to the city’s famed cathedral, originally dating from the 7th century. Due to a border anomaly, Konstanz lies on Switzerland’s land mass, and the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen is just a short walk away.
Konstanz is a university city with approximately 80,000 inhabitants located at the western end of Lake Constance in the south-west corner of Germany, bordering Switzerland.

The Münster (Cathedral), (In the old town, at Münsterplatz). Construction completed on the North Tower in about 1100 AD. Built between 1100 and 1854, the church is a magnificent example of architectural styles of the centuries. Climb up the tower for a fantastic view of Konstanz and the Bodensee.
The harbour. From the harbour on a clear day, you can see the Swiss and Austrian alps across the lake. The harbour is a great place to see sailboats, catch a boat across the lake, sit in a beer garden, rent a paddle boat or mini motor boat, or relax in the park.
Mainau flower island, (by car: follow Mainaustraße; by bus: bus line 4). Every day from sunrise until sunset. Flower gardens and parks, butterfly house, greenhouse. Mar 19 - Oct 24: €17.00 adult, € 10.00 students, children under 13 free. Off-season is about half-price.
Niederburg district, (north-west corner of old town). This charming district is the oldest part of Konstanz. It is made up of narrow streets and old buidings, sometimes more then 700 years old. On the first Friday of each month from May to October, the shops of Niederburg stay open late and there is music, flea market tables, and art in the streets. It's a very cozy atmosphere and worth a walk through.
Art nouveau houses beside the lake, Seestrasse (on the north shore where the lake meets the Rhine, just east of the train bridge).
Bismarck Tower, on 'Bismarksteig' street in the Petershausen district. There are towers commemorating the first German chancellor Otto von Bismarck all over Germany. Konstanz's Bismarck tower is located at the top of a grapevine-covered hill. There are benches and firepits at the base of the tower. It's a nice place to watch the sunset. There's a good view from the base of the tower and an even better one from the top.
Konzil (Council building), (at the harbour). This building was built in 1388 and originally used as a warehouse. From 1414-1417 the council of Konstanz was held here to elect a new pope. It currently contains a restaurant and concert hall, and is undergoing restoration work.
Rheintorturm and Pulverturm (Rhine entrance tower and Powder tower), (On the south shore of the Rhine, just downstream from where the lake meets the Rhine.). Remnants of the old city defenses.
Schnetztor, (Located at the south end of Hussenstrasse in the old town.). 14th century city gate and tower, next to a bit of the old city wall.
Imperia statue, (at the harbour entrance). By artist Peter Lenk. The statue is of a woman holding two naked men--Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund--in her hands. The men wear only the papal tiara and the crown, respectively. The statue refers to a short story by Balzac, La belle Impéria.
Sculptures along the German-Swiss border, (Along the border, next to the lake). Where there used to be a border fence, there is now a series of 22 sculptures representing the trumps of the tarot, the Great Arkana.

Konstanz is a city on Lake Constance (Bodensee), in southern Germany. Its preserved medieval district of Niederburg includes the Romanesque Konstanz Cathedral, known for its mix of decorative styles and a Gothic spire. The town hall is covered in delicate frescoes and has a Renaissance-style courtyard. The Rosgartenmuseum chronicles the region’s cultural history, exhibiting prehistoric to 20th-century objects.
Sidling up to the Swiss border, bisected by the Rhine and outlined by the Alps, Konstanz sits prettily on the northwestern shore of Lake Constance. Roman emperors, medieval traders and the bishops of the 15th-century Council of Constance have all left their mark on this alley-woven town, mercifully spared from the WWII bombings that obliterated other German cities.
When the sun comes out, Konstanz is a feel-good university town with a lively buzz and upbeat bar scene, particularly in the cobbled Altstadt and the harbour, where the voluptuous Imperia turns. In summer the locals, nicknamed Seehasen (lake hares), head outdoors to the leafy promenade and enjoy lazy days in lakefront lidos.
Konstanz is a city in southern Germany. It lies on the border with Switzerland and on Lake Constance (Bodensee), exactly where the river Rhine exits the lake. The city is split in two by the Rhine. Although the Rhine is the usual border between Switzerland and Germany, the historic part of Konstanz lies on the south (Swiss) side of the Rhine and is more or less an enclave.
Konstanz has traces of civilization dating from the stone age and was settled by the Romans in about 50 CE. Konstanz was an important trade centre and a spiritual centre. At the council of Konstanz in 1414-1418, a papal election was held, ending the papal schism. Konstanz attempted to join the Swiss Confederacy in about 1460, but was voted down. Due to its proximity to Switzerland, Konstanz was not bombed during world war II and its historic old town remains intact. It is a historic city with a charming old town, and could be called the jewel of the region.

Ein absolutes Highlight: Das Seefeuerwerk am Bodensee!
Hierbei werden Pyrotechnik, Inszenierung und Musik zu einem spektakulären Event vereint. Zum traditionellen Konstanzer Seenachtfest am Samstag, den 10.08.2019, gibt es auch in diesem Jahr wieder ein großes Feuerwerk. Die Veranstaltung wird seit mehr als 66 Jahren in Konstanz gefeiert und gilt mit Zehntausenden Besuchern als eines der größten Heimatfeste im Land. Dazu gehört auch ein dem Bericht zufolge rund 80.000 Euro teures Feuerwerk, das gemeinsam mit der Schweizer Nachbarstadt Kreuzlingen veranstaltet wird. Rund 40.000 Zuschauer waren dieses Jahr dabei.
Musiksynchrones Höhenfeuerwerk, südliches Flair, Sommerfeeling direkt am Bodensee. Mit dem spektakulären, grenzüberschreitenden Feuerwerk (D/CH) und einem umfassenden Rahmenprogramm sowie hunderten Schiffen auf dem See bietet es faszinierendes Entertainment auf dem Wasser, in der Luft und im Hafenareal. Der Nachthimmel über Konstanz (D) und Kreuzlingen (CH) verwandelt sich dank der pyrotechnischen Show in ein farbenfrohes Lichtermeer.
Das größte musiksynchrone Feuerwerk auf einem europäischen Binnensee beginnt um 22.15 Uhr. Dann werden die ersten Raketen unter dem Motto Pyro Rock den Himmel über der deutschen Seite des Bodensees in ein buntes Spaktakel verwandeln.
Vom mehrfachen Pyrotechnik-Weltmeister Joachim Berner inszeniert, begeistert das bis hoch in den Himmel ragende Lichtspiel Groß und Klein. Seit 1980 arbeitet Joachim Berner als Pyrotechniker und kreiert eine Vielzahl seiner Effekte selbst. Dies führt ihn rund um den Globus. Mehrmals erhält er mit IP den Weltmeistertitel bei der International Fireworks Competition in Montreal, Canada. Immer auf der Suche nach neuen, innovativen Ideen und Produktentwicklungen garantieren seine Feuershows einzigartige Momente.
Seit 39 Jahren ist Joachim Berner (59) für das Feuerwerk beim Konstanzer Seenachtsfest verantwortlich.
Viele Menschen lieben es, wenn Feuerwerk in berstenden bunten Formen den Nachthimmel erleuchtet. Doch beim Konstanzer Seenachtfest 2019 gab es möglicherweise zum letzten Mal ein großes Feuerwerk. Wie das Fest in den nächsten Jahren aussehen soll, will die Stadt auch mit Hilfe einer Umfrage klären. Konstanz hatte Anfang Mai den Klimanotstand ausgerufen. Als Folge soll auch das Seenachtfest umweltfreundlicher werden.
Hoffentlich fand dieses gigantische Erlebnis nicht zum letzten mal statt...
