Workshop at Oldtown Glassworks, Yellowknife
Had so much fun at this glass workshop at Oldtown Glassworks, making my own Northern souvenirs from glass .. not just any glass, but recycled glass. To date, Matt the owner has recycled over 95,000 bottles. Most of the equipment was made by him too.
Ended up making 7 items in my 3 hours there. Happy and inspired ...

에노다 로지에서 대자연과의 교감을 나눈 후 다시 옐로나이프로 돌아왔다. 돌이켜 보니 꿈만 같은 시간이었다. 아쉬움을 뒤로하고 유리공예관을 찾았다. “어서 오세요~ 들어와서 구경하세요. 올드타운 유리공예관에 오신 걸 환영합니다. 유리공예를 통해서 빈병을 새로운 작품으로 만들어요. 이것들이 다 유리병으로 만든 거예요” 옐로나이프 올드타운엔 지역 유리 공예 작가들의 개인 작업실이자 판매점이 여럿 있다. 그 중 유리공예 공방이 인기 있는 이유는 체험이 가능하기 때문이다. 버려진 유리병을 조심히 잘라 자신이 원하는 모양으로 만든다. 세상에서 단 하나뿐인 작품을 만들 수 있기 때문에 많은 이들이 도전한다. 깨진 유리를 섬세하게 다듬어 재가공해 낸다. “만들어지는 과정을 배우는 것도 좋고요. 결과물도 아주 깔끔해서 저도 어서 직접 만들어보고 싶어요” “오로라 위를 떠다니는 비행기에요” 유리잔에 문양을 새길 차례다. 먼저 밑그림을 그려 잔에 붙인다. 오려진 부분에 색을 입히는 작업이다. 다양한 색을 새길 수 있다. 이들이 선택한 문양은 흰색으로 설국의 캐나다를 표현했다. “제 남편이 개를 좋아해서 저는 개가 그려진 컵을 만들 거예요. 그리고 옐로나이프라고 새길 거예요, 남편한텐 비밀이에요” 재활용으로 다시 태어난 병이 옐로나이프의 멋진 기념품이 된다.

NWT MP Michael McLeod and the City of Yellowknife, along with Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, will hold a town hall discussion to engage citizens, including Indigenous peoples, in a discussion on clean growth and climate change. The purpose of the town hall series is to raise awareness of climate change issues and get various communities across the country involved in finding viable solutions. Feedback from Canadians will contribute to Canada’s approach on climate change.

Bottles can become part of the detritus of a town, turning up in dumps or discarded on a bench. In Yellowknife's Old Town, though, there's a team at work to take these forgotten pieces of glass and turn them into something entirely new. And as a result, filmmaker Caroline Cox points out that many Yellowknifers have a glass or two in their cupboard made at Old Town Glassworks.

낚시의 매력은 세 가지로 분류된다고 한다. 자연을 즐기고, 낚는 재미에, 먹는 즐거움까지. 이제 맛 볼 차례다. “이게 바로 호수에서 즐기는 점심이에요! 여행객들이 가장 좋아하는 감자칩이죠” 음식을 준비하는 동안 여행객들에게 따로 주어지는 임무가 있다. 바로, 들판에 탐스럽게 피어있는 붉은 베리를 따는 일이다. 베리로 음식의 풍미를 더할 잼을 만들 계획이다. 잡아 올린 생선을 손질하는데... 크기가 정말 어마어마하다. 강꼬치고기는 두꺼운 비늘로 겹겹이 덮여있고 뼈가 날카롭고 뾰족해 손질이 쉽지 않아 보인다. “생선뼈를 완전히 제거하고 나면 새하얀 살이 아주 단단하고 맛있는 생선이에요, 질감이 좋아요” 별미로 낚시꾼들의 찬사를 받는 강꼬치고기. 이곳에선 주로 튀김옷을 입혀 튀겨 먹는다. 노릇노릇하게 익어가는 강꼬치고기 튀김. 보기만 해도 군침이 돈다. 야생에서 직접 잡은 싱싱한 재료로 음식을 만드는 일이 정말 즐거워 보인다. 드디어 식사준비를 끝마쳤다. 특별한 음식이 나온 건 아니지만 감자튀김에 강꼬치고기 튀김만으로도 푸짐한 한 상이 차려졌다. 그 어디에서도 맛 볼 수 없는 자연의 맛, 모두가 그 맛에 감탄을 금치 못했다. “놀라운 맛이에요, 세상에서 제일 맛있는 물고기에요” 바삭한 튀김 옷 속에 부드러운 생선의 풍미가 느껴졌다. 인생 최고의 잊기 힘든 맛이다. 즉석에서 만든 베리 잼이 입맛을 돋운다. “맛있나요?” “네! 정말 맛있네요. 고급레스토랑에서 먹는 것보다 맛있어요. 좋은 경치를 보면서 먹으니 더 맛있는 것 같아요” 자연을 해치지 않고 순응하며 즐기는 여행자의 발걸음이야말로 앞으로 우리가 후손에게 남겨줄 의미 있는 선물이다. 대빙하호, 그레이트슬레이브 호수에서 즐겁게 보낸 하루가 이제 서서히 추억이 돼간다. 하지만 이곳은 언제나 변치 않는 모습으로 또 우리를 기다릴 것이다.
