Places to see in ( Essen - Germany ) Old Town Werden
The town of Werden, which is now a suburb of Essen, is exceptional because very few old buildings survived anywhere else in the heavily industrialised (and bombed) Ruhr area but, compared to other ‘old towns’, it is nothing special.
Small but definitely worth seeing. Small pedestrian street , no traffic jams, cozy restaurants and bakeries. Place where you can relax and enjoy. Cozy little town at the Ruhr. Nice local center with many small shops, boutiques and restauarnts. Enjoy the lively scenary during saturday morning at the farmers market between the Basilika and Folkwang University.
The atmosphere is delightfully romantic, the architecture outstandingly impressive, feel yourself transported into another century. There are some nice half-timbered houses.

Places to see in ( Essen - Germany ) Old Town Kettwig
Kettwig is historic it's a part of Essen which remained relatively undamaged after the war. The cobble lined streets fachwerk, (timber framed) houses compliment each other. Historic churches stand side by side next to restaurants and little stores.
It's a nice part of Essen to spend a day outside town. Old houses, cubble stone streets. One can get there by U11 till Messe/Gruga and catch the bus 142. Good restaurants and nice walk along the river, good for biking or inline skating.
Essen has a lot of modern touches. The south of it, where Kettwig is allows you to see a more traditional german city, quite confortable and godo for a calm stroll. If you are in Essen, you have to visit this small village. Quite, beautiful, close to river.

Places to see in ( Essen - Germany ) Alte Synagoge
The Old Synagogue (German: Alte Synagoge) is a cultural meeting center and memorial in the city of Essen in Germany. It is located in the center of the city on Edmund-Körner-Platz 1 (formerly Steeler Straße 29), close to the present city hall. The memorial center was founded in 1980 and is accommodated in the pre-war Jewish community's synagogue.
The synagogue, together with the attached Rabbinerhaus (House of the Rabbi), which today houses the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute, was finished after a two-year construction period in 1913. It was originally consecrated as the Neue Synagoge (New Synagogue). Today the building is one of the largest, best preserved and architecturally most impressive testimonies to Jewish culture in pre-war Germany.
The Essen synagogue was the cultural and social center of the Jewish community. In 1933 it claimed approximately 5,000 members. It served this function until the so-called Reichspogromnacht (also known as Kristallnacht) of 9–10 November 1938, when it was severely damaged on the inside by plundering, though the exterior remained nearly intact. Although Essen itself was very heavily bombed (see Bombing of Essen in World War II), the building itself managed to survive the Second World War without further damage.
From 1945-1959 the former synagogue stood unused as ruin at the edge of the Essen city center. In 1959, the surviving Jewish community, after it had been using Rabbinerhaus as their center, built a new, much smaller synagogue, which is the current place of worship. In the same year, the city of Essen acquired the former synagogue and in the following years of 1960/1961 renovated it into a museum for industrial design, the Haus Industrieform. For this purpose, all existing elements were removed or painted over. The ark for the torah was destroyed; the mosaics and ornaments were painted over. Following the spirit of the time, the inside was completely redesigned to a much more sober form to fit the purpose, no longer showing its former use as a synagogue. The main prayer hall was divided by a new floor and the ceiling was covered up.
A fire, caused by a short-circuit, severely damaged the Design exhibition in 1979. This event and a changed attitude toward handling historic buildings finally caused the city council of Essen to found the current institution Alte Synagoge. From 1986-1988 the entire building, with financial means provided by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, was reconstructed, so that it is again recognizable in its earlier function.
Today the Alte Synagoge is an open house for meetings and discussions. It offers a meeting-place for those interested in Jewish culture and religion, past and present. Cultural events such as concerts, plays, and readings are also offered.

[4K] West Germany Walk - Old Town Essen Kettwig
In this video I am doing a walk in West Germany, Essen Kettwig. Kettwig emerged from World War II largely unscathed and with most of its medieval old town still intact. The tower of the Market Church dates back to the 14th century, with additions from 1720. The Catholic Church St. Peter was christened in 1830. Other sights include Schloss Hugenpoet, which has been remodeled into a hotel, Schloss Oefte, and the Kattenturm, a 14th-century watchtower belonging to the former castle Luttelnau. This walk offers a great way to enjoy the city's beautiful ambience during the early afternoon hours.

Essen - Germany
Essen is a city in the central part of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Located on the River Ruhr, its population of approximately 579,000 (as of June 30, 2008) makes it either the 7th- or 8th-largest city in Germany. For the year 2010, Essen is the European Capital of Culture on behalf of the whole Ruhr area.
Formerly one of Germany's most important coal and steel centres and historically linked to the centuries-old Krupp family iron works, the city has developed a strong tertiary sector of industry and (sometimes together with nearby Düsseldorf) claims to be the desk of the Ruhr area.[2] It is home to 13 of the 100 largest German corporations and seat to several of the region's authorities.
In 1958, the city was chosen to serve as the seat to a Roman Catholic diocese (often referred to as Ruhrbistum or diocese of the Ruhr). In early 2003, the universities of Essen and the nearby city of Duisburg (both established in 1972) were merged into the University of Duisburg-Essen with campuses in both cities and a university hospital in Essen. Places to see in ( Essen - Germany )
Essen is a city in western Germany. Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex has been transformed to house several museums. A heritage trail through the former colliery chronicles the city’s history of coal mining and steel production. In a former coal-washing plant, the Ruhr Museum is dedicated to regional history. Red Dot Design Museum showcases contemporary design through everyday objects in an old boiler house.
It’s taken a few decades, but Germany’s seventh-largest city has mastered the transition from coal and steel powerhouse – spearheaded by the Krupp empire – to post-industrial city of commerce and culture. Visitors will be richly rewarded on their stopover. A visit with Van Gogh? Go to the Museum Folkwang. Emperor Otto III’s gem-studded childhood crown? Head for the cathedral treasury. A Unesco-listed Bauhaus-style former coal mine with a fabulous museum? Look no further than Zeche Zollverein. Add to that a verdant green belt and half-timbered medieval quarters and you may find it hard to believe you're in the Ruhrgebiet.
In the Ruhr Valley, Essen is a name that used to be a byword for German industry and the Krupp family, now ThyssenKrupp. But if you show up expecting a post-Industrial cityscape you may be in for a shock. The tertiary sector has left Essen with modern towers and parks, while a UNESCO-status industrial facility has been lovingly cleaned up as a monument.
There are high-profile concert halls in repurposed factories, and the Zollverein Mining Complex is both formidable and elegant for its Bauhaus architecture and titanic coal washery. You can get to know the Krupps a little better at their huge family villa, and take excursions to the authentic medieval villages in Essen’s suburbs.
The Ruhr’s most celebrated industrial facility and a World Heritage Site, the Zollverein Complex is a vast coal mine and coking plant in operation from 1847 to 1993. Its heyday came in the post-war period when industry like this powered Germany’s Wirtschaftswunder (Economic Miracle). The Zollverein Complex has also been described as the most beautiful, for the clean Bauhaus architecture of Shaft 12, completed in 1932. The 100-hectare complex was sold to the city after it closed and quickly became a monument and a UNESCO site.
Essen’s renowned art museum presents every European movement from the Romantics in the 19th century to Abstract Expressionism after the Second World War. The Bauhaus Coal Washery at the complex was turned into a museum for the whole Ruhr industrial area.
The Red Dot Design Award is an international industrial design prize receiving tens of thousands of worldwide entrants every year. At the start of the 1870s Alfred Krupp, of the famous family of industrialists, ordered a 269-room villa in 20 hectares of land over the Ruhr.
he must-see at Essen’s main church is the Golden Madonna of Essen. Sculpted in 980 and coated in gold leaf, this treasure is the world’s oldest sculpture of Mary, and the oldest free-standing medieval sculpture north of the Alps. The treasury chamber at the minster is open to the public and is famed for value and age of its liturgical objects.
Less a typical city park than an assortment of green-themed attractions, Grugapark has to be one of your go-tos on warm days. When Essen’s sizeable Old Synagogue opened in the 1910s it catered to a Jewish community of more than 5,000. In Nazi times the interior was ransacked and burnt, but the exterior was unaffected and also survived the war.
The concert hall in at the Stadtgarten was inaugurated at the turn of the 20th century and went through a renovation costing €72m at the start of the 2000s. Named after its architect, Avar Aalto, Essen’s opera house was opened in 1988, 30 years after Aalto’s plan won the design competition.
In 115 hectares, Margarethenhöhe was founded by Maragarethe Krupp and grew in phases between 1906 and 1938. The development was inspired by the Utopian ideals of the late 19th century, in which factory workers were afforded more room to live and relax. Once a separate town, Kettwig was incorporated into Essen in 1975 and sits around 10 kilometres southwest of the city centre.

Places to see in ( Essen - Germany ) Ruhr Museum
The Ruhr Museum, formerly the Ruhrland Museum, is a diverse natural history and cultural history museum for the Ruhrgebiet in Essen, Germany. The sponsor is the Stiftung Ruhr Museum. Director since 2012 is the historian Heinrich Theodor Grütter. The museum, which understands itself as a memory and showcase of the Ruhr area, documents in its permanent exhibition nature, culture and history of the Ruhr area and thus the development of the largest agglomeration in Europe.
The new permanent exhibition in the Kohlenwäsche (Coal wash) of the Zeche Zollverein colliery (A 14, shaft XII) was designed by the Stuttgart office of HG Merz and is divided into four levels. On the 24-meter level, which is accessed by the large external escalator - the largest in Germany -, there is a cash and information desk, a café, and the museum shop. On the 17 meter level, myths, phenomena and structures of the present Ruhr area are presented. The 12-meter level represents the region's pre-industrial memory and also includes the museum's collections on archeology, ethnology and natural history. On the 6 meter level the history of the Ruhr area in the industrial age is represented. Thus the museum is not only an industry museum, but presents a trias of nature, culture and history.
The former Ruhrlandmuseum was closed in April 2007 to make way for the new buildings of the Museum Folkwang. The new Ruhr Museum opened its doors on 20 October 2008 in the coal mine of the World Cultural Heritage Zeche Zollverein, which was rebuilt to plans by Rem Koolhaas, with a presentation of the Essen Cathedral Treasury.

Beeindruckende Eiszapfenwand 'Im Löwental' in Essen-Werden
