Aarhus on the east coast of Jutland in Denmark is home to Den Gamle By, an open air museum, known as The Old Town. Here 75 buildings from across the country have been painstakingly reconstructed in the town’s Botanical Gardens to show what life was like from the 16th to 19th centuries. Aarhus (Danish: [ˈɒːhuːˀs]; officially
spelled Århus from 1948 until 31 December 2010) is the second-largest city in Denmark and the seat of Aarhus municipality. It is located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, in the geographical centre of Denmark, 187 kilometres (116 mi) northwest of Copenhagen and 289 kilometres (180 mi) north of Hamburg, Germany. The inner urban area contains 269,022 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2017) and the municipal population is 335,684 (as of 2017). Aarhus is the central city in the East Jutland metropolitan area, which had a total population of 1.378 million in 2016.
The history of Aarhus began as a fortified Viking settlement founded in the 8th century and with the first written records stemming from the bishopric seated here from at least 948. The city was founded on the northern shores of a fjord at a natural harbour and the primary driver of growth was for centuries seaborne trade in agricultural products. Market town privileges were granted in 1441, but growth stagnated in the 17th century as the city suffered blockades and bombardments during the Swedish Wars. In the 19th century it was occupied twice by German troops during the Schleswig Wars but avoided destruction. As the industrial revolution took hold, the city grew to become the second-largest in the country by the 20th century.
Today Aarhus is at the cultural and economic core of the region and the largest centre for trade, services and industry in Jutland. The city ranks as the 92nd largest city in the European Union, and as number 234 among world cities. It is also a top 100 conference city in the world. Aarhus is the principal industrial port of the country in terms of container handling and an important trade hub in Kattegat. Major Danish companies have based their headquarters here and people commute for work and leisure from a wide area in Region Midtjylland. It is a centre for research and education in the Nordic countries and home to Aarhus University, Scandinavia's largest university, including Aarhus University Hospital and INCUBA Science Park. Being the Danish city with the youngest demographics, with 48,482 inhabitants aged under 18, Aarhus is also the second fastest growing Danish city, with an average growth of 4,500 people per annum since 2008.[5]
Aarhus is known for its musical history. In the 1950s many jazz clubs sprang up around the city, fuelled by the young population. By the 1960s, the music scene diversified into rock and other genres. In the 1970s and 1980s, Aarhus became the centre for Denmark's rock music fostering many iconic bands such as TV-2 and Gnags. Aarhus is home to the annual eight-day Aarhus International Jazz Festival, the SPoT Festival and the NorthSide Festival.
In 2017, Aarhus has been selected as European Capital of Culture along with Paphos in Cyprus. In August 2018, Aarhus will host the Hempel Sailing World Championships

Ebeltoft
Ebeltoft is an old port town on the central east coast of Denmark with a population of 7,468 (1 January 2014). It is located in Syddjurs municipality in Region Midtjylland on the larger Djursland peninsula of Jutland.
CountryDenmarkRegionCentral Denmark (Midtjylland)MunicipalitySyddjursCoordinates56°11′37″N 10°40′41″EPopulation7,468 (2014)TimezoneCET (UTC+1) - summer (DST)CEST (UTC+2)Postal code8400
Ebeltoft is known for its old town center with cobble-stoned streets and centuries-old half-timbered houses. Plans for the conservation of this peculiar environment, was initiated in the 1960s by the city council and the National Museum of Denmark. Apart from this overall old-village charm, Ebeltoft holds several other notable institutions such as Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, one of the world's first glass museums, Fregatten Jylland, the longeattractionsEip in the world and the European Film College, offering short and long courses in film making, especially for young people.
Tourism
Ebeltoft and the surrounding countryside is one of the tourist centres of Denmark, with many summer houses and rentals, a marina, a golf course and many child-friendly beaches. In spite of its relatively small size, Ebeltoft is quite lively, especially in the summer season. The population soars in June, July, and August - but all year round, there are many more people staying here than the official number of inhabitants suggests. This is due to the Danish phenomenon of 'summer houses' (holiday homes): most are made of wood but often quite luxurious, and there are several thousand in this area. The tourism, the old traditions of trade in this harbour town, and the international schools in the area probably explain why most people in this small town are open-minded and friendly towards foreigners. The town is, generally speaking, also well-to-do. Quite a few people work in the city of Aarhus, which is only 50 km away by road and so within commuting distance. The Aarhus Airport is just 15 km by road to the north.
Ebeltoft itself offers fewer and fewer opportunities for employment. Several large companies that used to employ unskilled labour are now closed; traditional trades, such as fishing and farming are diminishing rapidly; and the ferry line, Mols-linien, has moved quite a few of its employees to the ferry port of Aarhus. However, the town is popular with artisans, such as glass workers, potters, painters, and jewellery designers. The Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, which shows contemporary glass art from all over the world, was established in 1985 by Ebeltoft glass artists Finn Lynggaard and his wife, Tchai Munch. The many general stores and supermarkets - as well as hotels, restaurants, and bars - offer opportunities to make a living here.
Surroundings
Around Ebeltoft lie few small towns such as Fuglsø and Knebel on the Mols Peninsula. Just south of the town is the holiday resort of Øer. In 2009 the large Mols Bjerge National Park was inaugurated and it includes the town of Ebeltoft.

Rønde, Djursland, Denmark (Town Tour) walking and cycling.. GoPro
Check the Full Denmark Play-List:
Rønde
Rønde (or Roende) is a town on the southern part of the peninsula, Djursland in Denmark, Northern Europe, 23 kilometers north-east of the north end of Denmark’s second largest city, Århus. It is in part a pendler town to Århus, with a motorway entering Århus from the north. Rønde is located between Århus, and Århus Airport with a 12 kilometer drive from Rønde to the airport.
Rønde is placed in hilly country overlooking Århus Bay with 2.5 kilometers to the bay and the marina, Nappedam. The closest sandy beach for swimming lies in Følle Strand, 3.4 kilometers from Rønde.
Rønde has a population of 2.818 as of January 2014
Geography and Climate
Rønde is a hill town, with a 95 meter difference in elevation between the lowest and highest part. This kind of grade difference is unusual for Denmark, where the overall highest point in the country is 172 meters above sea level.
Rønde has a temperate coastal climate with an average summer temperature in July of 20 degrees Celsius in the day, and 12 degrees at night, and an average winter temperature in January with 5 degrees in the day and 1 degree at night (1961 – 1990) [2] The average precipitation is 722 millimeters per year,[2] making relatively flat Denmark well suited for farming. Barley, wheat, canola, and in recent years corn, are common crops in the farmland surrounding Rønde as well as in the rest of Denmark.
Education
There is a public and a private primary school in Rønde, as well as a high school with boarding. Rønde also has a vocational school with a number of lines related to crafts, commerce and computer oriented specializations.
Rønde has also got a Folk High School and an Efterskole. The two later are types of boarding schools, that young people in Denmark can choose optionally, typically for a year, to cultivate special interests such as sports and aspects of culture, such as theatre, or as a means of strengthening their academic skill. Often as a break before continuing in the more mainstream education system.
A neighboring smaller town, Ugelbølle, has got a recently established private primary school, Ugelbølle Friskole. Ugelbølle has also got an industrial area, and a newer residential neighborhood dominated by over the average priced housing. All of the houses have a view of over Århus Bay. Ugelbølle lies 1.5 kilometer from the western outskirts of Rønde. The two towns are likely to merge in the coming years.
Another private primary school close to Rønde is Syddjurs Friskole 5.8 kilometers from Rønde.
Århus University has got a bioscience department at the Kalø Estate just east of Rønde.
Commerce[edit]
The main road through Rønde is also a route from the city of Århus to residential and summer house areas on the southern part of the peninsula, Djursland. Also therefore Rønde is a local shopping centre. There are a number of shops, supermarkets, trades, crafts and restaurants in the town.

NATURE OF DANMARK (part I)
Funen (Danish: Fyn, pronounced [ˈfyːˀn]), with an area of 3,099.7 square kilometres (1,196.8 sq mi), is the third-largest island of Denmark, after Zealand and Vendsyssel-Thy. It is the 165th-largest island in the world. It is in the central part of the country and has a population of 466,284 (2013).[1] The main city is Odense which is connected to the sea by a seldom-used canal. The city's shipyard, Odense Steel Shipyard, has been relocated outside Odense proper.
Funen belongs administratively to the Region of Southern Denmark. From 1970 to 2006 the island formed the biggest part of Funen County, which also included the islands of Langeland, Ærø, Tåsinge, and a number of smaller islands.
Funen is linked to Zealand, Denmark's largest island, by the Great Belt Bridge which carries both trains and cars. The bridge is in reality three bridges; low road and rail bridges connect Funen to the small island of Sprogø in the middle of the Great Belt, and a long road suspension bridge (the second longest in the world at the time of opening) connects Funen the rest of the way to Zealand, paralleled by a rail tunnel.
Two bridges connect Funen to the Danish mainland, Jutland. The Old Little Belt Bridge was constructed in the 1930s shortly before World War II for both cars and trains. The New Little Belt Bridge, a suspension bridge, was constructed in the 1970s and is used for cars only.

Text description provided by the architects. The new Moesgaard Museum is uniquely situated in the rolling bucolic landscape of Skåde. With its sloping roofscape of grass, moss and brightly-coloured wild flowers, the building is a powerful visual landmark perceptible even from the sea.
The rectangle-shaped roof plane seems to grow out of the landscape and during the summer it will form an area for picnics, barbeques, outdoor lectures and traditional Midsummer Day’s bonfires. Come winter snowfall, the sloping roof will become transformed into the city’s best sledding hill.

Biking from Jylland (Jutland) To The Island Fyn - Denmark
Bridges connect people. There is an old and a new bridge from Jutland to Fyn. The new bridge is highway only and bikes are not allowed. The good thing is that you can use your bike, walk or run over the old bridge which is pretty cool.
Some years ago I have done that, but people do that every day when living in Middelfart and work in Fredericia or the opposite.

The Best Sights and Activities for a Holiday on Djursland, Denmark
The peninsula Djursland on the Danish East Coast is one of the best holiday destinations in the entire country.
But when going to Denmark, many visitors make the mistake of only visiting Copenhagen and then heading back home to check our little country off on their bucket lists.
And they have no idea just how many other amazing places they're actually missing out on. Copenhagen is a wonderful city and well worth a visit – but if you really want to experience Denmark, you need to venture out and discover its cities as well as its beautiful nature.
Djursland is the perfect destination for doing just that. The peninsula is said to have over 100 little beaches and bays and they're combined with a remarkably hilly landscape for Danish standards.
This is what makes Djursland such an amazing holiday destination – it's extremly varied, and even though it sounds like just another travel article truism, it really does have something in store for everybody.
See it for yourself in this little video and get inspired to visit the peninsula on Denmark's East coast. Stroll around the cobblestoned streets of Ebeltoft, have ice cream in Grenaa and take your kids to Fjellerup Strand. And whatever you do, make sure to bring enough time to really explore the Mols Bjerge National Park, including Trehøje and Kalø Slotsruin.
If you want more detailed information on what to see and do on Djursland, and you want to know more about the places you see on the video, here's where you'll find everything you need:
You're convinced that this is THE holiday destination for you? To make the planning easier for you, Campaya has collected a wide variety of holiday homes on Djursland – you can see them in our search engine, where you can quickly and easily book the one that suits your trip best:

History
The castle was founded in 1313 by the Danish king Erik Menved (Erik VI). It was one of at least four similar strongholds in Jutland, constructed to counter the ongoing rebellions of the Jutlandic nobility and peasantry against the Crown. The other strongholds were Borgvold in Viborg, Bygholm in Horsens and Ulstrup, east of Struer. All were built by local peasants forced labour, with the goal of breaking their rebellious spirits. Kalø Slot was raised on the small island of Kalø, connected to the mainland by a 500 m long artificial embankment, rising 1,2 m above sea level. The embankment was cobbled; deep moatswere dug and earth mounds heaped around the fortress. A port of call, outer ringwalls and other fortifications were all built by hand. This was a colossal task in the early 14th century.
The castle of Kalø was successful in its original purpose, but already in 1320 the new king Christoffer II, was forced by the Danish nobility in a coronation charter to tear it down, along with most of the Crown's fortresses in Jutland. It is not clear how much of the castle was actually torn down, but the Crown definitely lost its grip on Kalø and it was mortgaged. From the 15th century and onwards, Kalø had a more peaceful role, as the local administrative center and state prison. King Christian II held the future Swedish king Gustav Vasa captive at Kalø during 1518-1519, until he escaped and fled to Lübeck, disguised as a common peasant.
When King Frederick III converted the elective monarchy into an absolute monarchy in the revolution of 1660 in Denmark, Kalø Slot lost its function. The buildings had fallen into decay under the Swedish occupation during the wars between Sweden and Denmark in the years 1643 to 1645. In 1662, Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, Count of Laurvig, decided to tear down the abandoned ruin when he received it from his father, Frederick III. The useful materials were used to build his private palace in Copenhagen, now called the Charlottenborg Palace.
Kalø and Kalø Slot were declared protected as early as the 1800s (decade), and the restoration process was initiated in the year 1903, led by architect C. M. Smidt from the National Museum of Denmark. A memorial stone with his name has been placed next to the riding ground. The restoration proceeded through World War II, when the German marines used Kalø as a target for gunboat shooting practice. Fortunately, the ruins were only slightly damaged.
Today, Kalø and Kalø Slot are owned by the Danish State and are protected. In 2009 the area was incorporated into the Mols Bjerge National Park.
Etymology
The peninsula with the castle ruin is named 'Kalø' - 'Kal' has hitherto been written as 'Kalf' and is probably an older version of the modern Danish word 'Kalv' meaning calf, and 'ø' - meaning, island, in Danish. It is unclear if the island was named calf-island, because peasants used to send their cattle there, or if the small island was poetically perceived as a calf lying next to the mainland, representing the cow. This later use of the word calf has been quite common in Denmark and was often applied when a smaller island was placed next to a larger one. The island is a natural formation. In Lillebælt between Jutland and Fyn a small island is likewise called, Fænø Kalv - calf of the bigger island, Fænø.
