Amphitheatrically built on the foot of Rhodope mountain chain, the city is divided by the Kosynthos River, into the west part, where the old and the modern town are located, and the east part that boasts a rich natural environment. The Old Town of Xanthi is known throughout Greece for its distinctive architecture, combining many Byzantine Greek churches with neoclassical mansions of Greek merchants from the 18th and 19th centuries and Ottoman-era mosques. Other landmarks in Xanthi include the Archaeological Museum of Abdera and the Greek Folk Art Museum.
Xanthi is famous throughout Greece (especially Northern Greece) for its annual spring carnival. (Greek: καρναβάλι) which has a significant role in the city's economy. Over 40 cultural associations from around Greece participate in the carnival program. Old Town of Xanthi
The Old Town of Xanthi is located in the north of Xanthi constituting its historic core.
The city was built after 1829. This the year that large earthquakes fully deplete the previous settlement.
The city is built on the ruins and with the churches as cores, which were probably from the era of Byzantine Xanthia, as it was called from ancient time the city of Xanthi.
During the 19th century, Xanthi referred to as a town of 8,000 inhabitants, but was economically flourishing and this is due to the richness of the cultivation, processing, manufacturing and distribution of tobacco and its products, but also for privileged position to major trading roads.
The city is built from Epirus and Macedonian craftsmen, characterized by labyrinthine form of cobbled streets and is full of Balkan houses, inns, shops, typical churches of the last Ottoman period but at the same time a western neoclassical mansions whose owners were mainly merchants tobacco .

Nowadays, Xanthi’s old town is a real treasure of the prefecture and is the most well known old town in Greece. The inhabitants and authorities of Xanthi have managed to preserve its color and characteristics just as they were from the time of its establishment. It is well preserved and its rich architectural decoration in every narrow lane gives opportunity to visitors to travel back in time and at the same time experience the local modern way of living.
It is built amphitheatrically on the foot of Rodopi mountain chain and is divided into two by Kosinthos river. In its west side, where actually the city center of the old town is located, the Metropolitan church surrounded by the urban settlement dominates. In its east side you can see Samakov district which consists of simple houses and has a rich natural environment. Both sides still preserve their traditional characteristics, mesmerizing visitors and inhabitants every time they walk on the narrow lanes.
It is one of the largest settlements in Greece which is standing untouched by the time and still preservs its nobility and magnificence. The old town traditional houses not only stayed away from modern construction trends, but they were also renovated and preserved by the locals. Its paved lanes built in the 19th century are either round about or cut from each other vertically and are all surrounded by buildings of different architecture styles. Xanthi’s old town is one of the best preserved architectural complexes in Greece.

Folklore Museum of Xanthi
The Folklore Museum of Xanthi was founded in 1975, is located in the Old Town and housed in the mansion of the family Kouyioumtzoglou.
The institution acquired, preserved and studying elements of the modern history of the city. It exhibits material evidence of people and their environment, which contributed to the formation of local character.
Hosted the exhibition Xanthi 1860-1940 heyday, with references to the bourgeoisie and the tobacco trade, the exhibition weekdays and holidays, with elements of rural and ranching life in Thraki, and the exhibition Entrepreneurship in Xanthi early 20th century-Professionals-Working Class, based on a business guide of 1910-11.
Also the museum is including a special place for screenings, lectures, concerts, temporary exhibitions and other educational activities.
In the exterior there are two Hammam, male and female, and the church of Saints Akindinon, while the entire building as a whole operates as an exhibit and is a jewel for the city of Xanthis.

Ξάνθη, η κυρά και η αρχόντισσα της Θράκης...
Στην περιοχή που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στη Βιστονίδα λίμνη (ανατολικά) και το Νέστο (δυτικά) στα αρχαία χρόνια ζούσαν οι θρακικές φυλές των Βιστόνων ( κοντά στη Βιστονίδα λίμνη) και οι Σαπαίοι (δυτικά των Βιστόνων και μέχρι το Νέστο ποταμό. Στα ορεινά της ίδιας περιοχής ζούσαν τα θρακικά φύλα των Τραυσών ( στα βορειοανατολικά, στην κοιλάδατου Τραύου ποταμού, που διαρρέει την κοιλάδα του Εχίνου και χύνεται στα βόρεια της Βιστονίδας λίμνης), των Σατρών στα βόρεια και των Δίων στην κοιλάδα του Νέστου.
Κεντρική κώμη των Σατραίων ήταν ένα χωριό που βρισκόταν στο πέρασμα του ποταμού Κοσσινίτη-Κοσύνθου, ακριβώς στην είσοδο της χαράδρας προς το εσωτερικό της ορεινής περιοχής. Το χωριό αυτό στα αρχαιοθρακικά ονομαζόταν Πάρα (το) και σήμαινε το πέρασμα, διάβαση δηλ. την ίδια έννοια με το νοτιοελληνικό πόρος:διάβαση.
Με την πάροδο του χρόνου το όνομα του χωριού αυτού ενώθηκε με το άρθρο το και έτσι μετονομάσθηκε σε Τόπαρα ή Τόπειρος με την ίδια πάντα σημασία.
Με τη διέλευση της Εγνατίας οδού μέσα από το χωριό αυτό (100 π.Χ.) το Τοπάρα αναπτύχθηκε σε πλούσια πόλη και ακμαία «ελεύθερη» με δικά της νομίσματα (2ος αιώνας μ.Χ.).
Η Τόπειρος ήταν γνωστή καθ' όλη τη ρωμαϊκή και πρωτοβυζαντινή περίοδο σαν μια από τις σημαντικότερες πόλεις της Ν.Δ. Θράκης. Το 549 όμως την κατέλαβαν οι Σκλαβηνοί βάρβαροι (όπως και την παρακείμενη Αναστασιούπολη και την Τραϊανούπολη) και της μέν πόλεως κατέστρεψαν τα τείχη και τα οικήματα, τους δε κατοίκους της άλλους μεν έσφαξαν επί τόπου, ενώ τους υπολοίπους τους πήραν ως αιχμαλώτους μαζί τους πέρα από το Δούναβη. Αμέσως όμως μετά (522) την ξανάκτισε ο Ιουστινιανός και την οχύρωσε με θολωτά τείχη.
Τον 8ο μ.Χ. η πόλη ξανακαταστράφηκε, άγνωστο αν από σεισμό ή βαραβαρικές επιδρομές. Πάλι όμως ξανακτίσθηκε. Αλλά τώρα άλλαξε όνομα και μετονομάσθηκε σε (λατινικό) Ρούσιο (ίσως γιατί νόμισαν ότι η ονομασία Τόπερος προερχόταν από το Τόπυρος που σημαίνει το πύρινο). Αργότερα από Ρούσιο μετονομάσθηκε στο ελληνικότερο Ξάνθεια, όνομα με το οποίο πρωτομαρτυρείται το 879 μ.Χ., όταν ο επίσκοπος αυτής Γεώργιος αναφέρεται να συμμετέχει σε σύνοδο στην Κων/πολη.
Με αυτή την ονομασία είναι γνωστή σ' όλη την μετέπειτα ιστορία μέχρι και σήμερα.
