RV Travel - Anaconda Montana
Anaconda Montana was founded by the owner of the Anaconda mine as a smelter town in 1883 by Marcus Daly. Daly became one of the Copper Kings of the era and tried to dominate the industry. Much of the copper came from Butte MT but the terrain there was not good for smelting operations which emitted large quantities of fumes and required huge quantities of wood and coal for the furnaces. By 1919 the works in Anaconda had a 585 feet tall smoke stack, still claimed to be the tallest free standing masonry structure in the world. The smelting operations are long gone (but not the environmental mess they made) but the stack is preserved and is now part of a state park.
We found a very good restaurant in town (Donivan's) and had a wonderful time with our city tour in a vintage White bus. The buildings take you back to the late 1800's and are quite well preserved and well maintained. It is a fantastic little town (actually, it is supposedly the largest city in the United States in terms of land area, but the population is under 10,000) and well worth a stop off for a day or two to get to know the place.
Staying in Anaconda, Montana - THE BUS STORY Episode 91
We just spent 6 weeks exploring around the small, centrally located town of Anaconda, Montana. We visited historical state parks and celebrated our children's birthdays and even managed to prepare for something big we have coming up.
While we've had such a great time, it's finally time to hit the road again.
But unfortunately, things didn't quite go as planned.
Anaconda, Montana
I wanted to record the town getting dark during the eclipse but it never really got dark. Guess I should have gone to Idaho.
Montana Mosaic 1: When Copper Was King
This 22-minute video explores the profound impact of the copper mining industry on Montana. This video can be viewed as two shorter segments if desired. Segment 1 (10:55) focuses specifically on the Copper King's 1894 Capital Fight between Helena and Anaconda. Segment 2 (11:13) focuses on the tensions between laborers and management in Butte's copper mines in the early 20th century. These tensions paralleled the growth of unions in Butte. This video presents an overarching theme of industrialization during the period from 1892 until World War I-era Montana.

Montana Stirrups, Sage, and Shenanigans
Authors Anne Krickel, Francie Berg, and Jeanie Thiessen reveal highlights from their new book, Montana Stirrups, Sage and Shenanigans: Western Ranch Life in a Forgotten Era, in a program featuring a unique blend of music, history and storytelling. The Brink sisters grew up on a historic cattle ranch, founded in the 1880s, where the owner once ran thousands of cattle on free range. An Old West epic with a modern touch, their book is filled with vivid personal stories of ranching, wildlife, and western humor. It is a social history as well, of the uncommon people of the West, who practiced tolerance and respect, knew the close ties of family and community, and extended hospitality to strangers. Recorded on September 12, 2013.
