The island is first mentioned in chronicles of 421 when people from Padua and Este fled there to escape the barbarian invasions. In the 9th century, the island's population began to grow, and in the following centuries, its importance grew steadily, until it was governed by a dedicated Podestà. In 1379 Venice came under attack from the Genoan fleet; the people of Poveglia were moved to the Giudecca.
The island remained uninhabited in the subsequent centuries; in 1527 the doge offered the island to the Camaldolese monks, who refused the offer. From 1645 on, the Venetian government built five octagonal forts to protect and control the entrances to the lagoon. The Poveglia octagon is one of four that still survives.
In 1776 the island came under the jurisdiction of the Magistrato alla Sanità (Public Health Office), and became a checkpoint for all goods and people coming to and going from Venice by ship. In 1793, there were several cases of the plague on two ships, and consequently, the island was transformed into a temporary confinement station for the ill (lazaretto); this role became permanent in 1805, under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, who also had the old church of San Vitale destroyed; the old bell-tower was converted into a lighthouse. The lazaretto was closed in 1814.
The island was used as a quarantine station from 1793 until 1814. [2] In 1922 the existing buildings were converted into an asylum for the mentally ill and later used as a nursing home/long-term care facility until its closure in 1968. Afterward, the island was briefly used for agriculture and then completely abandoned.
In 2014 the Italian state auctioned a 99-year lease of Poveglia, which would remain state property, to raise revenue, hoping that the buyer would redevelop the hospital into a luxury hotel. The highest bid was from Italian businessman Luigi Brugnaro, (€513,000); he planned to invest €20 million euros in a restoration plan.[4] The lease did not proceed because his project was judged not to meet all the conditions.[5][6] Other sources suggested that the deal was annulled because the bid was too low.[7] Brugnaro initially fought the cancellation of the lease, but after he became mayor of Venice, he renounced any intentions to the island.[8]
In 2015, a private group, Poveglia per Tutti, was hoping to raise €25–30 million for a new plan to include a public park, a marina, a restaurant, a hostel and a study centre according to The Telegraph. As of mid-2019, however, the island still sat vacant.

Places to see in ( Chiavari - Italy )
Chiavari is a small town in the province of Genoa, Italy. It has about 28,000 inhabitants. It is situated near the mouth of the Entella River. A pre-Roman necropolis, which dates from the 8th to 7th century BC, has been uncovered in the area where Chiavari is located now. Chiavari grew up on the traces of a Roman camp on the Via Aurelia. A castle was constructed in 1147. The old town contains numerous arcades and buildings from the 13th century, including a castle, several mansions, and the nearby Church of San Salvatore di Lavagna, which was founded in 1224 by Innocent IV.
The cathedral was rebuilt in 1613. Known famously as a center of ancient humanistic tradition, Chiavari has a public library with a collection of manuscripts and incunabula. After the discovery of the conspiracy of the Fieschi, in 1542, and the capture of Chiavari by the Counts of Lavagna, the town suffered much, being associated with the conspirators. Among its illustrious citizens were: Luca Cantiano di Moneglia, founder of an Art Academy, and Giuseppe Gregorio Solari, translator of many Latin poets.
From 1805 to 1814, Chiavari served as the capital of the short-lived Apennins Departments of France of the First French Empire. Chiavari is the home of the Chiavari chair designed in 1807 by a local, Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi. The chair was a success and led to the opening of many factories in Chiavari and surrounding towns. So distinctive is this design that Chiavari presented a pair to Pope Leo XIII as a gift when the city became a diocese in 1893. Chiavari railway station was opened in 1868; it is located in a passageway between the town centre and the beach-side.
Alot to see in Chiavari such as :

CHIAVARI CHAIRS ELIGO :
The history of the Chiavari Chair dates back to ancient local tradition of the Liguria region, specifically in the city of Chiavari. Chiavari is a small town of the Tigullio Gulf since the twelfth century, grew below the Genovese Republic. Chiavari is crossed by the river Rupinaro, which had a central role in the growth of the local craftsmanship since its very beginning.
In the Middle Ages the people outside the city walls were always devoted to crafts such as masons, knife-grinders, cobblers and carpenters as they were in contact with the sources of supply of materials.
Towards the end of 1800, the continued growth of local civilisation created the conditions for the beginning of a craft cradle: the local artisans started a deep specialisation in woodworking and interlacing of the straw and the wood in general.
The Descalzi family was born in these territories, where quarries and workshops of carpenters were widespread and young apprentices and masters were growing, including Gaetano Descalzi.
The Chiavari Chair, thanks to the genius of Mr. Descalzi, represented a revolution soon as its design pointed to the function, not the form. The chairs of the time in fact were very decorated, rich and bulky. Descalzi wanted a lightweight chair, basic but also elastic and robust.
Descalzi worked by subtraction: lightened structure, diminished sections and used only local materials resulting in a compromise between lightness and strength that decreed the success right away. Nowadays, this territory is still a center of deep knowledge of the processes and models, in respect of the original patented designs.

The floods were at the highest level since 1966. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro blamed climate change for the disaster. Venice is on its knees, said Brugnaro. The damage will run into hundreds of millions of euros. The floods, accentuated by driving rains and strong winds, also ravaged areas beyond the city itself.

Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Borutta
Borutta is a comune in the Province of Sassari in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 150 kilometres north of Cagliari and about 30 kilometres southeast of Sassari. Borutta borders the following municipalities: Bessude, Bonnanaro, Cheremule, Thiesi, Torralba. The volcanic hill once housing the village of Sorres (destroyed by the Aragonese in the early 14th century) houses the Pisan-Romanesque church of San Pietro di Sorres.
The Borutta area stretches between 389 and 730 metres above sea level. It extends along the valley of the Rio Frida, south of Mount Pelao. The Ulari, natural cave which was inhabited in the late Neolithic age (3500 BC) represents the oldest evidence of man's presence in the Borutta area. The village sprang up later and had the ancient name of Gruta (gruta . grotta= cave). The numerous nuraghi on the territory are other evidence of Prehistoric settlement. Mount Sorrano is an area of considerable importance as regards the town of Sorres (or Sorra), which in the Middle Ages, together with the village of Borutta, belonged to the 'curatoria' of the Mejlogu in the 'Giudicato' of Torres.
From an archaeological and natural point of view, a visit to the Ulàri cave of great interest. Inside, a number of stone and pottery objects have been brought to light attributable to the Culture of Ozieri (3500 . 2700 BC). The cave is home to one of the largest colonies of bats in Sardinia. One of the beauties of the village is represented by the lanes of the historic centre, where the characteristic houses rise.
These little roads have been given some rather quaint names in Sardinian, like for example Su cuzzone mannu and Carrela de su monte, the old names which marked the present Via Silvio Pellico and Via Arborea. Other suggestive places are the old nineteenth century springs of Cantaru and Funtana.
Traditionally the villagers gather water at these springs and still use the public wash-house. We should also note that the very famous Church of San Pietro of Sorres is situated in the village. Together with the 'Santissima Trinità of Saccargia', the Church of San Pietro of Sorres is one of the best-known in Sardinia, also because of the simple attraction of its charm and the variety of its ornamental motifs. The festivity which is dearest to the villagers' heart is the Feast of San Pietro of Sorres , 29th June, during which the local people leave from the parish church and walk as far as the monastery in a long procession, dressed in costume on foot and on horseback.

Worst Floods in 50 Years Brings Venice to a Standstill | Mayor Declares State of Emergency
After apocalyptic floods swept through the lagoon city Venice's mayor declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.
Incessant rains have led to the flooding of its historic basilica, squares and centuries-old structures.
Streets were turned into raging torrents, stone barriers were shattered, boats tossed ashore and gondolas shattered against their anchorages as the lagoon tide peaked at 6 feet 2 inches shortly before midnight.
It was the highest level since the 1966 epic floods.
Over the years the rising water levels is becoming a regular threat to the tourist jewel. Venice’s mayor Luigi Brugnaro was quick to attribute climate change for the disaster.
More than eighty percent of Venice was under water when the tide was at its peak and although levels had lessened by daybreak further bad weather was anticipated later in the week, with a string of thunderstorms lining up to pound Italy.
A flood blockade was conceived in 1984 to protect Venice from high tides, but the multi-billion euro project, known as Mose, has been dogged by the sort of setbacks that have come to characterize major Italian infrastructure projects — prolonged delays in the backdrop of corruption and cost overruns.
While residents started a clean-up operation, some tourists seemed to enjoy the drama, with one man filmed swimming through Saint Mark's Square dressed in only shorts on Tuesday evening.
The overnight surge triggered a number of small fires, including one at the International Gallery of Modern Art Ca' Pesaro.

STORYLINE:
The village of San Giuliano di Puglia held a funeral on Sunday for the 29 victims of Thursday's earthquake, including
the teacher and 26 children who were crushed when the village's school collapsed.
A funeral tent was set up next to the town's sports centre which had been used as a makeshift morgue for the bodies extracted from the collapsed school.
Policemen, firefighters, soldiers and paramedics carried the coffins up a dirt road to the funeral service. Relatives of the dead followed on foot, weeping and clinging to each other. Photos of the deceased, stuffed toy animals, dolls and sports trophies were placed among the flowers covering the coffins.
Twenty-six white caskets were followed by the three, brown mahogany ones of the adult victims - the teacher and two elderly women who died when parts of their homes fell down.
Applause rang out when President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and his wife, Franca, who was fighting back tears, arrived for the service under a tent at the outskirts of this now-evacuated town. At the altar, the bishop leading the service read off all the names of the victims.
During the service, local priest Father Fernando Manna - who spent Thursday night assisting the rescue operation - read a letter from survivors of the earthquake to their deceased classmates. The congregation was also addressed by Nunziatina Porrazzo, whose eight-year-old son Luigi was killed.
After the service the coffins of the victims were carried in procession by the emergency services to the village cemetery amid crowds of mourners.
The quake struck on Thursday, heavily hitting San Giuliano di Puglia, a town of fewer than 1,200 people in south-central Italy. Many surviving children suffered fractured arms and legs and severe chest injuries, and some 140 injured people from the region remain hospitalised.

Venice: St. Mark's Basilica under water in worst flooding in 50 years | DW News
In Italy, Venice's Mayor Luigi Brugnaro is blaming climate change for the worst flooding in more than 50 years. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called the flooding a blow to the heart of Italy, and the Italian cabinet is set to declare a state of emergency. The flooding has brought calls for more to be done to protect the historic city from the ravages of rising sea levels. Construction on an underwater sea barrier, known as the 'Mose,' started in 2003. So why hasn't it been finished?

black nobility
The Black Nobility or Black Aristocracy (Italian: nobiltà nera or aristocrazia nera) are Roman aristocratic families who sided with the Papacy under Pope Pius IX after the Savoy family-led army of the Kingdom of Italy entered Rome on September 20, 1870, overthrew the Pope and the Papal States, and took over the Quirinal Palace, and any nobles subsequently ennobled by the Pope prior to the 1929 Lateran Treaty. For the next 59 years, the Pope confined himself to Vatican City and claimed to be a prisoner in the Vatican to avoid the appearance of accepting the authority of the new Italian government and state. Aristocrats who had been ennobled by the Pope and were formerly subjects of the Papal states, including the senior members of the Papal Court, kept the doors of their palaces in Rome closed to mourn the Pope's confinement, which led to their being called the Black Nobility.
Despite the relatively recent name, the Black Nobility had existed for centuries, originating in the Baronal class of Rome and in the powerful families who moved to Rome to benefit from a family connection to the Vatican. These supported the Popes in the governance of the Papal States and in the administration of the Holy See. Many of the members of Black Noble families also became high-ranking clergy and even Popes. Black Nobility families (in this instance families whose ancestors included Popes) still in existence include notably the Colonna, Massimo, Orsini, Pallavicini, Borghese, Odescalchi, and Ludovisi. Schiaratura familly. Major extinct papal families include the Savelli, Caetani, the Aldobrandini family and Conti. Famous members of Black Nobility families include Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII, Ernesto Pacelli, an important financier and Prospero Colonna, mayor of Rome.
