Oleviste church and tower in Tallinn.
Between 1549 and 1625, this Gothic church was the tallest “skyscraper” in the world. Its spire (159 m) served as a guide not only for ships entering Tallinn, but also for lightning. Throughout the history of the church, lightning repeatedly struck the spire, burning the church three times to the ground.
Today, the height of the spire is only 124 meters, but even now it exceeds the height of most buildings in Tallinn and remains one of the most important symbols of the Old Town.
Atop St. Olav's Church (Oleviste kirik) in Tallinn, Estonia
22 September 2015 - An expat friend living in Tallinn tells me that you shouldn't take good weather for granted in Tallinn. Indeed, the day began rainy and cloudy, but as I got to the top of the church tower just after midday, the rain was reduced to a drizzle, the clouds began to scatter, and the sun made an appearance. It took awhile to walk up the 258 steps to the viewing platform, but the wonderful panoramic views all around were easy to appreciate...

Tallinn, Estonia from the observation deck of Oleviste Church
First built in the early 13th century, it was once the worlds tallest building. The church is dedicated to the 11th-century King Olav II of Norway, but linked in local lore with another Olav, the church's architect, who fell to his death from the tower. It is said that a toad and a snake then crawled out of his mouth. The observation deck is halfway up the 124 metre structure.

St. Nicholas' Church and Museum | NIGULISTE | Tallinn
St. Nicholas' Church (Niguliste kirik) is a medieval former church in Tallinn, Estonia. It was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron of the fishermen and sailors. Originally built in the 13th century, it was partially destroyed in Soviet Bombing of Tallinn in World War II. It has since been restored and today houses a branch of the Art Museum of Estonia, focusing mainly on ecclesiastical art from the Middle Ages onward. The former church is also used as a concert hall.
Most famous of the artworks in the museum is perhaps a Danse Macabre by the Lübeck master Bernt Notke, which depicts the transience of life, the skeletal figures of Death taking along the mighty as well as the feeble ones. Danse Macabre or The Dance of Death was a popular medieval motif in art. Only the initial fragment of the original 30 metres wide painting (accomplished at the end of the 15th century) has been preserved and is currently displayed in St Nicholas' Church.
The museum contains several other notable late Gothic and early Northern Renaissance works of art. The former High Altar of St Nicholas' Church was made between 1478–1481 in the workshop of Hermen Rode, a master painter from Lübeck. Paintings on the outer flanks of this double-winged altar depict the life of Saint Nicholas, the central part and the unfolded wings expose over thirty wooden sculptures forming the so-called gallery of saints.
The museum also contains a special silver chamber with the silver treasures of guilds, craft corporations and the Brotherhood of Blackheads.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin in Tallinn, also known as Dome Church is a cathedral church located on Toompea Hill in Tallinn, Estonia. Originally established by Danes in the 13th century, it is the oldest church in Tallinn and mainland Estonia. It is also the only building in Toompea which survived a 17th-century fire.

In the 15th and 16th centuries when Tallinn was the strongest, there were 46 towers along the 4.7km wall, but only 25 remain today. Look into the kitchen, the tower is a name that is said to be high enough to reveal the kitchen of the other house. The 'Fat Margaret' gates are a little more cute than the other gates. If you walk down the street, there is a steeple that comes into your eyes everywhere in the old town. The church, built around the 12th century, is 124 meters high. I wanted to see Tallinn's old city at a glance and decided to go up to the steeple. The spiral narrow stone steps were endless. When I grabbed my legs and looked at my strength, I could see the light. When I opened the door, I saw the old town with the whole town wearing Santa hat. Carefully, I went back to the back and looked far into the Baltic Sea. Indeed, it was a milestone for merchant ships entering medieval Tallinn. From 1549 to 1625, the Church of Oleviste was the tallest building in Europe. Church spiers have been the standard for limiting the altitude of Tallinn. Now the standard is gone, but it remains the tallest building in Tallinn. The city hall, where darkness was spread, became rather brighter. The tree came on and I heard a whispering song. As I follow the songs, people are shaking their bodies here and there. The Estonian people, who thought it was a bit introspective, found out that it was full of excitement. The stage was full, and a performance team dressed up in traditional Estonian costume was on stage. Estonian traditional dance is said to be composed of all amateur. I wondered behind the stage and watched once. The waiting room was also full of tension and excitement on the stage. I had two heartbeats, but I did well. It's okay because there's always a mistake. There was a mistake, but I would not have noticed.

Kirik, ehitatud 12. sajandil, on 124 meetri kõrgune. Tallinna kõrgustiku piiramise standardiks on olnud kirikupiirid. Nüüd on standard kadunud, kuid see on Tallinna kõrgeim hoone. Ruum, kus pimedus levis, sai üsna heledaks.

To overcome the 258 steps and climb the tower Oleviste (St. Olaf Church) in Tallinn, Estonia
End of tourist season 2015
Tallinn, Estonia - Saint Olaf's Church (2018)
St. Olaf’s Church or St. Olav's Church (Estonian: Oleviste kirik) in Tallinn, Estonia, is believed to have been built in the 12th century and to have been the centre for old Tallinn's Scandinavian community before Denmark conquered Tallinn in 1219. Its dedication relates to King Olaf II of Norway (also known as Saint Olaf, 995–1030). The first known written records referring to the church date back to 1267, and it was extensively rebuilt during the 14th century.
Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. It is situated on the northern coast of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in Harju County. From the 13th century until 1918 (and briefly during the Nazi occupation of Estonia from 1941 to 1944), in languages other than Estonian, the city was known as Reval. Tallinn occupies an area of 159.2 km2 (61.5 sq mi) and has a population of 450,305.
Tallinn, first mentioned in 1219, received city rights in 1248, but the earliest human settlements date back 5,000 years. The initial claim over the land was laid by the Danes in 1219, after a successful raid of Lyndanisse led by Valdemar II of Denmark, followed by a period of alternating Scandinavian and German rule. Due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League.
Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tallinn is the major political, financial, cultural and educational center of Estonia. Often dubbed the Silicon Valley of Europe, it has the highest number of startups per person in Europe and is a birthplace of many international companies, including Skype. The city is to house the headquarters of the European Union's IT agency. Providing to the global cybersecurity it is the home to the NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. It is ranked as a global city and has been listed among the top 10 digital cities in the world. According to the Global Financial Centres Index Tallinn is the most competitive financial hub in Northern Europe and ranks 42nd internationally. The city was a European Capital of Culture for 2011, along with Turku in Finland.
