NHK World 2015 Journeys in Japan Daniela Shiga: Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
[ Journeys in JapanJ ] Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
Though Romanian, some of my ancestors come from Greece. So finding a place in Japan that was full of olive trees and Greek statues just like in the Hellenic country, enjoying mild weather similar to the Mediterranean, was the last thing I ever expected. I traveled by ferry in the Seto Inland Sea to reach Shodoshima, which is often called Japan's Aegean as well as the Olive Island.
Starting with a single sapling planted 100 years ago, there are now thousands of olive trees on the island. Since I visited during the harvesting season, I appreciated the olives in all their colorful stages of ripening, from yellowish green to royal purple to deep, reddish black. I plucked them from the trees and helped make olive oil at a factory. Later, I enjoyed what turned out to be a most delicious meal, a mixture of traditional seasonings combined with the magic of olives.
Another thing that surprised me was the joviality and the rather Latin spirit of the Shodoshima people. I blended into the community fairly quickly, which is not always so easy to do as a foreigner in Japan. People readily opened up to me - and friendships blossomed - during the bento lunch making event and while watching a kabuki performance. The loveliness of it all is that one can also mingle with the pilgrims that come all year round to visit the many temples and shrines scattered around the island. That is an unusual spiritual experience even for Japanese.
So how many uses can we find for the olive trees? Come with me and I will show you a whole range from oil making and dying clothes using the leaves to preparing healthy foods.
Shodoshima is the 2nd largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. Blessed with warm, mild weather, the island has nurtured a distinctive culture. Traveler Daniela Shiga enjoys local food, a kabuki performance and a magical hike at the peak of autumn. From olden times, the olive has been a symbol of peace and prosperity, as well as food with life enhancing benefits. Shodoshima is famous for its high-quality olives, which are on par with those of the Mediterranean. Olive farming was introduced to the island during the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) as part of a government program. Since then, islanders have nurtured their groves with great care. Daniela visits a 3rd-generation olive farmer and later speaks to an artist who produces handicrafts using threads dyed naturally with olive leaves. She also learns about the island's tradition of soy sauce making and joins pilgrims on part of their trek to mountain temples. Her final destination is a shrine where the locals, including school children, perform kabuki.
Places Daniela visited:
Inoue Seikoen, Olive Dyeing Atelier Konohana, Shokinshoyu, Creative Cuisine Nonoka, Shodoshima Tourism Association: 1896-1 Nishimurako, Shodoshima-cho, Shozu-gun, Kagawa Prefecture

Known as the “Olive Island”, Shodoshima Island, located in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of the Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku, is the birthing place of olive cultivation in Japan. Being blessed with a Mediterranean climate, the island successfully grew olives in 1908. Since then, Shodoshima olives and olive oil are highly regarded throughout Japan.
Olive Park, a tourist attraction site, is a working olive grove where the first olives were grown. Visitors can enjoy the walkways throughout the hillside surrounded by olive trees. Within the park is a windmill presented to the park from Milos, Greece.
Visitors interested in olive cultivation best visit the small museum within Olive Park. In addition, there is a restaurant, a cafe and some shops which allow visitors to sample as well as purchase olive related merchandise such as olive oil, olive candy, olive cosmetics, olive noodles and olive ice cream.

Staying on Shodoshima Island - An Inviting Labyrinth
Shodoshima, in Kagawa, is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, with a population of about 30,000. A mild climate and beautiful scenery make it a popular tourist destination with over 100,000 overseas visitors a year, but convenient access meant most visitors came and left the same day. To encourage overnight stays, a group of students at Kagawa University proposed making guesthouses out of unused homes in an old part of town that’s a fascinating maze of narrow alleys. Their project is now receiving enthusiastic support from the islanders.

#MyJapanStory : Japan Vlog 4 : Tokyo Trip Day 7
Edit: #MyJapanStory is an awesome contest for foreigners to show their experiences in Japan. Since this is a compilation of my whole trip, I believe that this is something that can summarize how much I love Japan, and how much fun I had. Even if I don't win first prize, I still enjoy the country!
You can find more details on it from here:
This was a Saturday afternoon that Kata and I went off to a Cat Cafe in Shibuya. We stayed here for a good 2 hours playing with the cats before heading off to shop.
My feet were in so much pain that I had to leave early though... so I went on home alone.

There are so many things to do and enjoy in Shodoshima Island, located in the Seto Inland Sea of the coast of Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku. From driving along the Shodoshima Skyline to view the gorge near the Monkey Park and Kankei Gorge to the paying homage to the temples on the Pilgrim Road, visitors could relax, explore, and find themselves. In addition, visitors may be interested in the Osaka Castle Stones or Angel Road.
Osaka Castle Stones/Michi No Eki
Shodoshima is well known for its quality stones. As a result, stones from the destruction of the Osaka Castle were shipped to Shodoshima to be restored and re-cut for the reconstruction of the Castle. Some of the stones still remain on the island and can be seen on the northeastern tip of the island.
Visitors interested in stone cutting may wish to visit the former site of a stone cutting workshop. Though closed now, there are still many unfinished stone pieces remaining for visitors to view. The Osaka Castle Stones Michi no Eki is another site for people interested in the castle stones to stop by. Michi no Eki literally means a station on the road, and this is a rest area for drivers and passengers. At the Osaka Castle Stones Michi no Eki, visitors can visit the museum featuring tools used in the past. Castle stones are also displayed here as well.

Angel Road
This heavenly named road is truly a thing of wonder. This sandbar located near the Tonosho Port can only be crossed during low tide. Many couples come to this island, hoping to cross the Angel Road as it is said if a couple crosses the sandbar hand-in-hand, they can find true happiness together. There are people who write their wishes for love on wooden boards (ema) to be hung on a tree here, in hopes their wish will come true.
Senmaida
Literally translated to mean one thousand rice fields, visitors will find hundreds of rice fields embedded into to the hillside on Shodoshima. These rice fields create the illusion of being steps of along a staircase of rice fields ascending to the top of the mountain. There is an outdoors kabuki stage, as well, in a village nearby. Since the Edo Period, local kabuki plays have been performed here.
