Imperia: The Olive Tree Museum Carli | Italia Slow Tour
When visiting Imperia, pay a visit to the Olive Tree Museum Carli. Could you guess the importance of the olive trees and of the olives in the Mediterranean area? At the museum we discover that the relationship between man and the olive began in upper Mesopotamia, 7,000 years ago. Then the cultural value of the olive tree has been handed down to nowadays and we find it as a symbol in the main monotheistic religions.

Tiffany Riley's speech at The 3000 year old Ancient Olive Tree, Vouves, Crete.avi
In 2009 I was asked to do a little speech about the ancient olive tree at Ano Vouves. It is a wondrous tree in a near by village, and was highlighted as part of a contemporary exhibition held at the Art Factory, Olivepress in Dromonero.
olivepress.eu (some of my paintings can be seen here).
The exhibition was entitled 'The Mediterranean Olive Grove'.
Here is what I said in English! -
We are delighted that you could all join us here today in celebration of our ancient olive tree.
I feel very honored after living on Crete for 15 years to have found a home in this small Beautiful Village of Vouves.
Here we are privileged to have one of the oldest living evergreen neighbours -- our ancient olive tree of 3000 years old.
This neighbour has lived through many wars and long periods of peace,
many hot summers and equally winters.
And she still produces fruit, gives us shade in the hot afternoons and rest for the birds.
Our neighbour resonates with times gone by.
She began to grow in the dark iron ages, was cultivated by the Minoans, pruned by the Romans, and harvested by the Christians. She also saw the Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians and Turks until the independence of Crete.
She also endured 2 world wars.
We will leave, but she will stay.
Forever a symbol of Hope, Peace, Wisdom and Culture
So, lets raise our glasses to toast our lovely neighbour!

Crete | One Hell Of An Impression | 3,000-Year-Old Olive Tree In Crete WoOW
The mystery of Crete runs deep. Whoever sets foot on this island senses a mysterious force coursing warmly and beneficently through their veins, sensing their soul beginning to grow” wrote Nikos Kazantzakis, Crete’s most celebrated author, in Report to Greco. On the south side of the Aegean is an island that is mystical, warm and welcoming, pure and generous. Crete captures the spirit of Greece, and enchants everyone who visits it. Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Ierapetra, Malia, Hersonissos, Sitia, Sfakia: an island with numerous destinations and thousands of vibrant images. Crete captivates and seduces the senses with its impressive and majestic landscape, with its open-hearted and vivacious spirit, its rich history, its world-famous cuisine and its hospitable people.
The most popular destinations in Crete
1. Chania: The old town of Chania with its world-renowned Venetian lighthouse, the aristocratic suburb of Halepa, the Tabakaria (centre for leather production), the Neoria (arsenal) and Kum Kapi, teeming with bars, cafes, restaurants and elegant hotels.
2. Rethymno: Discover the old town of Rethymno, a gem of a settlement on the island, with its Venetian buildings, mosques, minarets, fountains and cobblestone alleys lined with shops, cafes, bars and hotels. Explore Idaio Antro – one of the most important caves of Minoan worship.
3. Heraklion: The Venetian port of Heraklion, a lively city filled with sights, museums, restaurants, bars and hotels. Walk along the walls of the old city, and Morosini (Leondaria) Square, surrounded by important buildings; the Loggia (City Hall), Agios Titos and Armeria (armory).
4. Ierapetra: The old town with its narrow alleyways, little harbour and famous Fortress of Kales is one of the most significant sights in Crete.
5. Agios Nikolaos: A cosmopolitan summer resort, with the mystical allure of Lake Vouliagmeni (which, legend has it, is bottomless), with numerous cafes and restaurants dotted around its shores.
6. Sitia: The historic Kazarma fortress (Casa di arma) and its animated waterfront, lined with cafes, shops and restaurants, should be on your list of destinations to visit in Crete.
7. Elounda: A cosmopolitan paradise of sophisticated resorts and hotels, with private beaches, pools and piers. It has the highest concentration of Greece’s five-star resorts and is the top destination for a luxurious holiday.
8. Lassithi: Visit the palm forest at Vai but make sure you also find time for the caves of Diktean Antro and Milatos, the island fortress of Spinalonga and the Lassithi Plateau.
9. Mount Ida (Psiloritis): The highest mountain in Crete. Ambitious hikers will climb to the top and be rewarded with an unforgettable view.

Checklist Earth: Greece (Pt. 5/12)
Take a virtual 360 journey through Greece.
* Full Notes and Thoughts:
Part 5: Getting out of old town Chania, we visit the famous Olive Tree of Vouves - considered the oldest living olive tree in the world. Then we take a quick tour and tasting at the Terra Creta olive oil factory before having lunch at Taverna Argentina in the seaside village of Kolymbari. Watch me get grossed out by fish stomach. Finally, we make the drive all the way west to Falasarna Beach for sunset.
Checklist Earth is a travel series that celebrates my (somewhat annoying) mania for planning, timing, unnecessary details, and logistics. So, let my neurosis be your guide and enjoy the ride.

The Castelnuovo di Farfa Museum is the brainchild of two architects and a working group that shared the single idea and purpose of carrying forward a truly original vision of a typical agricultural product -- olive oil.
