Mediterranean Cruise Day 18, Olympia Greece wine and olive oil tasting
This was another really nice day. Though we didn't actually get into Olympia and see the ancient Olympic ruins. The tour for that would have not been good for Mom.
We did have a nice drive to a private ranch where we had wine and olives, olive oil and much more...they even danced for us too!
Next episode: Athens where I get to clime all the way up to the Acropolis.

Video Notes:
* Introduction to Excursions or Private Tours from Katakolon, Greece: *
The stop at Katakolon needs a tour for sure. There really isn’t much to do around the port. The only reason cruise ships stop here is for Olympia. I’m glad I got to see it because I would never fly to Athens and make the drive out to see Olympia, so this was a nice chance to see the things I read about in history books growing up.
I highly recommend a private tour company vs. any tours that you can book on the ship. Having your own private car and personal attention, especially on a short day like this one, was key.
Sights:
The first thing we did was see the archaeological museum. It would have cost an extra 130 euros if we wanted her to go in with us and explain everything we see.
I didn’t go to the olympic museum because we didn’t have enough time. Our tour guide told us that it was pretty boring because it’s basically just a rectangular ruin.
Hermes and the infant dionysus, by Praxiteles: this statue was discovered to be in very good condition in 1877. This statute is famous for being incredibly polished. Hermes is carrying the child dionysus to the nymphs who were charged with his rearing. The arm is missing, but they think he could be holding out a bunch of grapes for the child.
Nike of Paionios: This is an ancient statue of the Greek goddess of victory named Nike. It was originally on a pillar near the tempe of Zeus. This statue was installed to honor the recapture of Sphacteria from the Spartans in 425 BC. This is a statue of the greek goddness of victory which shows her gently landing on her left foot. This is where the brand Nike got its name.
The west pediment of the temple of zeus: this shows a big battle between centaurs and ancient Greeks. This was built around 460 BCE and it has 42 figures in total. It's crazy to see how well preserved it was and how emotional some of the figures are.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a giant Zeus sculpture on a giant wooden throne with gold, ivory, precious stones and ebony. Sadly it was destroyed over time, possibly by fire or looting.
The second part of the museum was a big open land where some of the ruins still stand. I can’t believe they allow you to walk into the ruins and touch them. We didn’t spend that much time here because it started pouring.
Palaistra: This was part of an ancient gym, and helped to train some of the wrestlers and other athletes.
Philippeion: was erected by Philip II, King of Macedonia after the victory of Chaeroneia in 338 BCE. Originally there were 18 Ionic columns and inside were gold and ivory statues of Philip's family.

Olympia, Greece: Video Tour & Review
This Mediterranean treasure, site of the very first Olympic Games, boasts one of the highest concentrations of masterpieces from the ancient world. Come along as we take a video tour of the Peloponnesus, an estate winery, and Aghios Andreas Beach (our customers’ favorite). We’ll also reveal our pick for the one must-have local delicacy.
Olympia & Wine Tasting
Visit the archaeological site of Olympia. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in 776 B.C. Today, only parts of the temple remain at the museum and only ruins remain at the site. The Temple of Zeus no longer exists and its traces have disappeared through the ages. The Temple of Hera, Prytaneion, and Philippeion were monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous Stadium, with a capacity of 45,000 spectators, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage. Stand at the starting line and imagine the voices of thousands of spectators seating on the stone bleachers. Continue with a drive through picturesque countryside to a local family-owned wine estate where you'll be welcomed by the owners, the Kanellakopoulos family. Start you tour from the winery, with a mix of old and new equipment, the cellar and the very old olive press. Afterward, visit the traditional family museum with a collection of various old agricultural tools and equipment, interwoven with the estate cultivation throughout the years. You'll have the opportunity to taste the local wines and snacks offered by the owners.

I visited the nearby vineyard. Hello. Hello. What are you doing? I manage the vines. I'm picking weeds. It's less than 100 years old. We grow trees in a circle. To protect the grapes from the wind and the sun. This is the secret of more than 200 years of growing vines in this barren land. Here is the wine. This wine was made last year. You should know that it is Santorini House wine. I do not use pesticides, and I have grown it in my field, so I made my own wine. My grandfather was very proud of the wine. good? Okay? He gave me wine to take home. Honey, my house is in the movie. I shot it outside the house and now I'm going to take the house. Good people. Come on in. I am a documentary filmmaker. Come in. Grandfather with two sons and daughters boast that he gave his grandson his name. Grandma gave her Easter bread. I made three eggs with egg yolks and butter for a long time and put flour and ansolini cheese in it. I do not want to have salty cheese, but I have to put only sweet cheese. I'll eat this, so you guys have to eat it. Okay. You can eat this. No, I can not. It's okay to watch TV, but it looks good. I love it here. The volcanic island next to it looks fascinating, but we are proud of our island. A couple who Santorini is better than anywhere else in the world. I feel a sense of mutuality for each other even if I hate it.

The Mercouri Estate is located in the Western Peloponnese on the plateau of the Ichthis peninsula near the village of Korakochori, very close to Katakolo port and Ancient Olympia. It is a historic winery, founded in 1864, oriented in the cultivation of vines and olives, which in constant evolution, 150 years after its foundation by Theodore Mercouri in 1864, continues to supply the domestic and global market with wine and olive oil of the highest quality. It belongs to the Mercouri family and today the company is operated by the 4th and 5th generation of the family.
The estate vineyards are located beside the family residence and in two nearby locations, with a total area of approximately 40 acres. The land and the climate are particularly well-suited for the production of high-quality wines and the vineyards are certified for Best Farming Practice. The estate grows more than 15 varieties of grape of both Greek and international origin, from which the wines are produced. The annual production exceeds 120,000 bottles 40% of which is exported to over 12 countries around the world.
Mercouri Estate is also involved in the field of agrotourism. Large and small parties of friends of nature and wine are welcome to visit the vineyards and olive groves of the estate, the premises of the winery and the small folklore museum with the collection of old farm tools and machinery and walk among the trees to the beach coming into contact with the beautiful nature that surrounds the estate. The Views of the Olympic Mountains Are Truly Godlike
In 1788, a British mariner passed by the majestic, snow-covered mountains of northwest Washington - the peaks seemed the perfect dwelling place for Greek gods, so he named them the Olympic Mountains.

Discover Greece
This timeless land boasts a 5000-year history. Its legacy of drama, tragedy and democracy is unequalled and combined with beautiful sunshine, 1400 idyllic islands and a sense of living legend it is a truly unforgettable experience.
Lying at the southern extremity of the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe, Greece occupies an area of 131,944 square kilometres and is home to 10.66 million people. Mainland Greece is surrounded by roughly 1400 islands, 169 of which are inhabited. The islands are divided into six groups: the Cyclades, the Ionian, the Dodecanese, the islands of the North-Eastern Aegean, the Sporades, and the Saronic Gulf islands. The two largest islands, Crete and Evia, do not belong to any group. Greece is a veritable treasure trove of historic sites spanning four millennia of civilisation. Some highlights include Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi and the Parthenon in Athens.
Modern Greece is a sum of an extraordinary diversity of influences Romans, Arabs, Franks, Venetians, Slavs and Italians, to say nothing of the great Byzantine Empire. The arts still play an integral part in Greek life and have done since ancient times. In summer, Greek dramas are staged in the ancient theatres where they were originally performed. One of the unforgettable aspects of a holiday in Greece has to be island-hopping in the Aegean and Ionian seas. All with their own unique character, the Greek islands are a fusion of stone, sunlight and sparkling sea. The arid Mani region of the Peloponnese sports the countrys best array of wildflowers crocuses, anemones, irises, poppies, lilies, rock roses and cyclamens abound. Follow your nose and youll find yourself knee-deep in wild oregano, basil and thyme. Sample some delicious Greek yoghurt and the immensely popular country salad lettuce, tomatoes, feta cheese, cucumber and olives. Appetisers and snacks like tzatziki (cucumber and yoghurt dip), souvlaki (skewered, grilled meat in pita bread) and spanikopita (spinach and cheese pie) are the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer or sparkling wine. The sheer beauty and diversity of this extraordinary country will stay with you forever.

Olympia -
Explored Ancient Olympia and the archaeological remains where the Olympic games were hosted. Discovered in 1766, the excavation work began in 1829. We had the opportunity to see the Temple of Zeus, the gymnasium, the Hippodrome and the Stadium, which was deigned to hold 40,000 spectators.
We ended the adventure at a local farm for lunch where they grew their own vegetables and olive oils. They had lots of farm animals which was super cute!! :)
Final night event, was the Gala dinner. Who doesn't like to get dressed up? ;)
Ancient Greece, Athens, Olympia,
ONLY ON AP Greek olive producers furious at efficiency plan to blend oil
The purity of Greek olive oil is at stake as plans to make the market more competitive raise fears about declining quality of what is considered to be the country's liquid gold.
Proposals to extend a brutal efficiency drive to olive oil production have been met with anger and disbelief.
Olive farmers and exporters are unhappy with a government proposition which could allow high quality olive oil to be blended with cheaper vegetable oil.
Greece is the world's No.3 olive oil producer, but has been losing ground to leaders Spain and Italy where farmland is flatter and increasingly mechanised.
The Greek government commissioned an efficiency study from the Paris-based Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and it came back with a 328-page report of detailed recommendations to change regulations for commonly used products - from books to milk.
Olive oil, the OECD recommended, should be made available for retail in larger containers while cheaper blends should be allowed for frying and low-income families.
If proposals from a government funded study are adopted, olive oil blended with cheaper vegetable oils will soon go on sale as part of an effort to modernise Greece's battered economy that was rescued from near bankruptcy four years ago.
Evgenia Papageorgiou, a restaurant cook near Syntagma Square where frequent protests against austerity measures have taken place is more than sceptical.
For food I'm unwavering: olive oil. We have the best oil and we're going to blend it? I don't accept it and I would never do it, she said.
Gaea Products Chief Executive Officer Aris Kefalogiannis said he's in favour of all measures that remove trade barriers and make competition more vigorous, but on this specific one, the OECD got it wrong.
You will allow a mixture like that to create a product which is cheaper and therefore more competitive in the international markets, but Greek olive oil is very high quality. It comes with a premium, he said.
This is the competitive advantage of Greece and as I said, you cannot create a competitive mixture by using high quality olive oil. These are products that can be done efficiently and very competitively in other countries, not in Greece.
At Gaea Products, a high-end olive oil exporter in Agrinio, western Greece, production continues fulfilling international orders for treasured extra virgin olive oil.
Financial analyst Vangelis Agapitos is more optimistic.
He thinks the proposal could work as long as labelling remained clear, and could even help Greek companies reach markets where consumers are becoming more familiar with western goods, like China.
The overall message throughout these last years of crisis is that the past can no longer be a guide for future. We need to change and adapt, he said.
Olive producers in the fabled hills of the southern Peloponnese region worry that Greece could spoil its own signature product.
In the olive groves near Ancient Olympia in the West of the country, the trees were once considered sacred, and in many ways they still are.
Greece's olive belt that stretches from north of Olympia - home of the original games - southward past the city of Kalamata, fills the land between mountains, towns, and monuments that were the landmarks of ancient Greek mythology.
Trees are carefully pruned and looked after, described by farmers with a reverence that could match the language used by makers of champagne or single malt whisky.
Thirty-eight-year-old olive grower Aris Kolotouros who studied plant science in Italy before returning to look after the 3,000-tree grove planted by his grandfather 80 years ago, says he doesn't agree with the olive blending proposal because the effort by farmers is based on producing a quality product.
