Inside the Olympia Milk Bar - Sydney Australia. First peek.
Here is some footage I shot yesterday of the outside and inside of the now famous Olympia Milk Bar in the Stanmore/Annandale area of Sydney Australia. My girlfriend and I were declined an interview with the owner when we asked him. We are not aware of any detailed footage that exists of the inside of this shop, to date. It was very difficult to shoot this footage for a number of reasons and if it were not for good planing/timing on my part and some good luck regarding what the owner was doing at the time, then we could not get this footage on video at all. Owner does not like people filming or photographing inside, as was made clear to us when we also asked him about that.
Otherwise, the owner was friendly and service was good overall.
Dane Austin - Olympia Milk Bar
A sound scape dedicated to the influx of human population on this cafe....and it's world famous owner.
Sadly the stanmore cinemas were closed down , his cafe is still standing..tho the cinemas were the main source of income....Not a happy vulcan
If you ask me the main has put a curse on the area.
I also believe the shop is a meeting place for the most of the zombie population throughout of the inner west
hence the HAUNTED song ive made for him and the shop.

Stanmore was named by a prosperous saddler, John Jones, who purchased land in 1835 where Newington College now stands and called it the Stanmore Estate. Jones named it after his birthplace of Stanmore, now a north west suburb of London. Land in the present Stanmore area was first allocated to colonial officers by Governor Phillip between 1793 and 1810. Thomas Rowley owned Kingston Farm which occupied the eastern half of Stanmore and much of Newtown, and a portion of George Johnston's Annandale Farm estate covered the area south of Parramatta Road containing Annandale House built in 1799 on the hill between Macaulay and Albany Roads. It was from here where Johnston marched with his troops to Castle Hill on 5 March 1804 to quell the convict revolt and where he rode on 26 January 1808 to arrest Governor Bligh during the Rum Rebellion. The first Norfolk pines on the Australian mainland were planted along the line of Percival Road, leading to Parramatta Road by Lt Colonel George Johnston.
Leichhardt is a suburb in the Inner Westof Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Leichhardt is located 5 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district (CBD) and is the administrative centre for the local government area (LGA) of the Inner West Council. The suburb is bordered by Haberfield to the west, Annandale to the east, Lilyfield to the north and Petersham, Lewisham and Stanmore to the south.

Stanmore, near the Salisbury Hotel and train station
The Salisbury Hotel is a charming old building at the heart of Stanmore in Sydney's Inner West. Like many neighbouring suburbs the old buildings stand in stark contrast to the sleek new apartment blocks built recently.
Shoppingtown Mark Lucas & the Dead Setters - Notes Live 1st Dec 2012
Shoppingtown (Mark Lucas) live at the Laughing Outlaw Records Class of 2012 Showcase 1st December 2012. From the 2011 Laughing Outlaw cd Putting on the Dog (LORCD 130), the song was in part inspired by the old Olympia Milk Bar in the Sydney suburb of Stanmore, which has survived in the face of redevelopment, & despite being a little faded, remains almost unchanged over the decades. The Olympia is run by an old Greek gentleman who, the story goes, used to operate it with his brother who, when he died, begged him not let it go. The rhythm of this town indeed & still good for a chocolate milkshake.

Enmore was named after Enmore House, built in 1835 by Captain Sylvester Browne, a master mariner with the British East India Company. Browne named his house after the Guyana estate of a business associate, the head of James Cavan & Co, which in turn took its name from Enmore in Somerset, England. Browne's son wrote several Australian classics, including Robbery Under Arms, under the name of Rolf Boldrewood.
In 1836, there was a report of snowfall in the suburb. Weather observer T.A Browne stated, the years 1836, 1837 and 1838 were years of drought, and in one of these years [1836] a remarkable thing happened. There was a fall of snow; we made snowballs at Enmore and enjoyed the usual schoolboy amusements therewith.[4]
Enmore House was the home of the Josephson family from 1842 to 1883, when it was demolished. After Josephson's death, his son Joshua Frey Josephson lived there until 1883. Joshua Frey Josephson had four sons and nine daughters from three marriages. One son, Joshua Percy Josephson, was Mayor of Marrickville in 1901. Five streets are named after five of the daughters: Clara, Laura, Marian, Pearl and Sarah.[5]
The house at 75 London Street is listed on the Register of the National Estate. It was built circa 1900 and stands out as a notable example of the Federation Queen Anne style, with elaborate Art Nouveau elements.[6]
Enmore is home to Sydney's oldest running live theatre. Built in 1908, the Enmore Theatre is a heritage listed building that plays host to many international bands including; KISS, Nas, Pulp, Massive Attack, Morrissey, Grizzly Bear, Brandy, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Paramore, Coldplay, Ween, The Offspring, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, Gillian Welch, Noel Gallagher, Kraftwerk, Marilyn Manson, The Tea Party and Nightwish. Up until the 1980s, the theatre also served as a revival cinema screening classic and contemporary films.

he suburb takes its name from the area of Dulwich in London. The name Dulwich Hill appears in Sands Directory of 1892. It had been known by several different names prior to this. Following European settlement, it was called Petersham Hill. It later took the name Wardell's Bush, a reference to Dr Robert Wardell, one of the area's early landowners. Other names the area was given were South Petersham and Fern Hill.[3]

The area became part of Sydney's expanding tram network in 1889 and, like many suburbs in the inner-west, experienced rapid growth in the early twentieth century. As a consequence, the suburb has a large number of examples of Australian Federation architecture. It also features examples of Edwardian, Gothic and Italianate architecture. The tramway ran up until 1957.
Listed on the Register of the National Estate is the former public school in Seaview Street, which now operates as the Dulwich Hill High School of Visual Arts and Design. The building was designed by W.E.Kemp in the Romanesque style and built circa 1892.[4] Situated in the same street is the Dulwich Hill Library, a converted cottage in the Victorian Gothic style.
Stanmore Road was constructed in 1835 and early development occurred in this area. In 1855, the railway divided Stanmore into areas known as North and West Kingston north of the railway, and South Kingston south of the railway. The Kingston Farm had been sold to James Holt in 1835, and North Kingston was subdivided in 1854. South Kingston (between the railway and Stanmore Road) was slowly subdivided from 1857 with isolated large houses built between 1860 and 1870. It was not until the late 19th century that the name Stanmore came into more regular use, replacing Kingston. Municipal boundaries established in 1861 and 1871 placed most of Stanmore into the Municipality of Petersham, with the area south of Stanmore Rd placed into the Municipality of Marrickville. In 1878, Stanmore railway station was established and the streets west of Percival Road were laid out. More intensive development subsequently occurred in this area and the name Stanmore slowly moved northwards from Stanmore to Parramatta Roads. Stanmore became a desirable location, booming in the 1880s and 1890s with the opening of Newington College and the Percival Road shopping area. The naming of streets after English colonies between Derby and Stafford streets reflected the English values of the time. The final subdivision of Johnston's South Annandale estate took place in 1905, and building was not completed until 1916-1918. Annandale House was demolished in 1905, and Weekley Park was established on land donated by the Johnston family.
