INTERESTING TREATS AT OLYMPIC MARKET | Phnom Penh, Cambodia
The Olympic Market is a multi-level market near Olympic Stadium, and features mostly wholesale goods. Because of this, it is most popular amongst local residents to buy in bulk. They have fabrics, clothes, religious items, and traditional Khmer dresses, I like to refer to this market as the Cambodian Costco.
The outside of Olympic Market are very busy and the entrance is often blocked by tuk-tuks, trucks and motorbikes. Once you are inside the Olympic Market, the bustle can get very hectic and the corridors are rather narrow.
After quickly exploring, I was drawn to the top level where the food court is located. I sat down and ordered some very basic, yet authentic dishes. The Beef with Chinese Broccoli was the first choice. Seasoned mostly with oyster sauce, this tasty dish is best eaten with rice. This particular dish was not my favorite, as ehe beef was a little dry and vegetables over cooked.
The Sweet & Sour Chicken Soup on the other hand was amazing. Cooked with chicken, and jammed packed with fresh vegetables of all kinds. This sweet tangy and sour soup is a delight to be eaten with rice or on it's own. The chicken was very moist and tender and the vegetables were cooked just perfectly, giving it a delicious crunch.
Apart from the food court upstairs, this market has countless vendors in and out of the market selling delicious eatables of all kinds. Which lead my to my next item of consumption. This interesting looking fruit looks kinda like a mini cantaloupe, but taste completely different. At the time I was unsure of it's name, but have found out that it is a Bael (Wood Apple). Taste a little bit bitter and bland with a hint of tang. I would compare it to a raw guava.
Finally, I went for a yummy salad. Now this is not your ordinary salad that you're use to, it is a Chicken Feet Salad! Boiled chicken feet, pig ears mixed with pickled vegetables and mint, all drenched with lime and fish sauce. This sour and spicy salad really gives you a kick of exploding tangy flavor. The chicken feet and pig ear has an interesting elasticity to it, kinda like a cartilage. Very common dish in Cambodia, definitely one of my favorite.
The Olympic Market is definitely worth checking out. Located in the center of Phnom Penh, making it very easy to get to. Taxi, tuk tuk, motorbike or Grab App are always good options.

There are plenty of local markets for your to explore when you’re in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, but one of the relaxed markets, that quite small and friendly, is Tuol Tom Poung Market, also commonly known as Russian Market. The market is local, small, and manageable, and it’s a great place to get a taste of Phnom Penh and try some delicious local food.
It was a rainy afternoon on the day I went to Russian Market, and we first stopped outside the market to eat some crepe like snacks, filled with creme and coconut. It’s one of those Cambodian street food snacks that so much fun to watch being made. Price - 500 KHR ($0.12) per piece
Most of the street food stalls are open in the morning and for lunch, so I was there a little late, but there were still a few stalls open. We had some fried spring rolls and fresh summer rolls as well as an amazing green papaya, herb filled salad, which was delicious. The best thing was the salad, and the environment of eating at Russian Market is always fun as well. Total price - $6 USD total (you can use US$ in Cambodia).
Finally, one of the top reasons I wanted to eat at Russian Market was for the seafood restaurant at night, which sets up in the motorbike parking lot at about 6 pm each evening. We ordered a fish cooked in foil, clams, and oysters, all cooked over an extremely hot charcoal fire. The food was overall good, and I liked the atmosphere a lot. Total price for seafood - 39,000 KHR ($9.40).
When you’re in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Russian Market is a fantastic place to eat!

A visit to Central Market, Phnom Penh (Cambodia)
Phnom Penh's Central Market is a city icon: a yellow Art Deco structure surrounded by a warren of small stores selling everything from live seafood to fake Rolexes and kitchen appliances. This video gives an idea of what the market looks and sounds like, and focuses specifically on the market's food section.

Phnom Penh Central Market Tour/Tips
Phnom Penh in my opinion has one of the coolest looking markets in Southeast Asia, the art deco Central Market. The Khmer name of the market is ផ្សារធំថ្មី, Phsar Thom Thmey, which technically translates to New Grand Market in English. When it opened in 1937 it was considered the largest market in Asia. Even today it's easy to see it dwarfs markets like Saigon's Ben Tanh Market. The ceiling of the dome area reaches 26 meters with four arched arms that house many stalls from tshirts, to pots and pans. Ever since I first saw it I was attracted to it's grand scale and the market itself is very interesting, almost a theme park for shoppers and food lovers. In the main dome you'll find gold, gems, watch, and jewelry sellers. The four arms are somewhat categorized with either clothing, electronics, or household items. This market is not solely focused on tourists as you'll see by the traditional Khmer clothing for sale along with everyday household items, hardware, and more. The perimeter area is my favorite place to wander as it's where you'll find the wet market and food area with all kinds of special Cambodian delicacies from dried fish to sweets. There's also a large dining area where you can sample local favorites including all kinds of noodle soups and bbq seafood. This is my 3rd visit to Phnom Penh in the last 4 years. During this current visit I spent almost every day wandering around the market for an hour or so to familiarize myself with the layout and to observe some of the little everyday things that some people might miss if they only visit it once, like the area where they slide the ice into the market for chipping. I hope you enjoy the video and subscribe to channel! I have a passion for exploring East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia and have made it the focus of my life for the past 6 years. I also have a podcast I would love you to check out! Feedback is always welcome:
