Deer Lake Trail - Olympic National Park - Washington State - United States
Here are highlights of the Deer Lake Trail in Olympic National Park in Washington State. From the Sol Duc trailhead at the north side of the park, the trail climbs 1,640 feet in elevation as it follows the Sol Duc River and Canyon Creek. This trail has many wonderful waterfalls including the iconic, three prong Sol Duc Falls. After 3.4 miles one arrives at beautiful Deer Lake in a wooded basin in the transition zone from montane to subalpine forest. Deer lake is at an altitude of 3,522 feet.
For this backpacking trip I was joined by my brother, Bill O'Leary and his future spouse, Laura Covington.
The trip was enjoyable and truly memorable.

Olympic National Park: Strange and Unexplained Disappearances in Washington

► The Olympic National Park is a protected land located in the State of Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. Northwest of Olympia and bordered on the south by the Olympic National Forest, the park is home to four regions: the pacific coastline, alpine areas, the temperate rainforest to the west and the drier forests to the east. Originally, on the 2nd of March 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt designated the area with the Mount Olympus National Monument status, however both Congress and President Roosevelt assigned the land as that of a National Park on the 29th of June 1938.
48 years later in 1976, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated the land as an international Biosphere Reserve. Finally, in 1981 the Olympic National Park was designated as a World Heritage Site.
According to nationalgeographic.com:
“One of the most primeval parts of the lower 48 states, Olympic National Park covers nearly 1 million acres of the eponymous peninsula in Washington State, 95 percent of which is designated wilderness. While the typical image of the park is a dark, damp and overwhelmingly beautiful temperate rainforest, the park also shelters alpine highlands, tranquil lakeshores, and a wild Pacific coastline that seems totally untouched by humans.”
The park attracts approximately 3 and a half million people every year and while most come and go without incident, some are not so lucky.

Restoring Elk Country - Washington's Olympic Peninsula
Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is among the most green, lush landscapes in the entire United States, but that’s not necessarily a good thing for the Roosevelt elk that live there.
The rainforest climate produces plenty of vegetation but the specific plant types lack key protein and minerals.
Plus, many forest stands are overly thick and dense largely due to decades of fire suppression along with past timber harvest practices that produced an abundance of even-aged stands. All that translates into very little or poor nutritional forage for elk, blacktail deer and other wildlife.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided funding for a recent project aimed at improving habitat on National Forest system lands in the Upper Sitkum watershed on the northwest side of the peninsula.
That’s where crews created openings across 200 acres of young, densely stocked forest stands by thinning trees to allow sunlight to reach the forest floor below.
They stacked the slash into piles thus creating habitat for small mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
Crews then spread native grass, forb and shrub seed on the bare floor that not only improves habitat for song birds and even insect pollinators like bees and butterflies, but it creates nutritional forage for elk and it prevents the spread of invasive non-native plants and weeds.
RMEF’s habitat enhancement work on the Olympic Peninsula dates back to 2002.
Since then, more than a quarter million dollars in RMEF funding leveraged nearly $1.3 million more in partner funding from the Olympic National Forest and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, among others, to carry out 31 projects across nearly 20,000 acres of Roosevelt elk habitat.
These projects range from noxious weed treatments to meadow restoration to travel management within sensitive habitats to fertilization to provide plants with essential nutrients diluted from the soil by rainfall.
Restoring elk country is core to RMEF’s Managed Lands Initiative.
Since 1984, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and its partners completed more than 12,000 conservation and hunting heritage outreach projects that protected or enhanced more than 7.5 million acres of wildlife habitat.

Cape Flattery. Clallam County, Washington.
Aerial footage of one of the most beautiful places on earth!
Cape Flattery is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States. It is in Clallam County, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca joins the Pacific Ocean. It is also part of the Makah Reservation,[1] and is the northern boundary of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. Cape Flattery can be reached from a short hike, most of which is boardwalked.[2] The westernmost point in the contiguous United States is at Cape Alava, south of Cape Flattery in Olympic National Park. However, the westernmost tip of Cape Flattery is almost exactly as far west as Cape Alava, the difference being approximately 5 seconds of longitude, about 360 feet (110 m), at high tide and somewhat more at low tide.[3]
The Cape Flattery Lighthouse is on Tatoosh Island, just off the cape. Makah Bay and Neah Bay are on either side of the cape. Neah Bay, Washington is the closest town to the cape.
James Cook[edit]
Cape Flattery is the oldest permanently named feature in Washington state, being described and named by James Cook on March 22, 1778. Cook wrote: ... there appeared to be a small opening which flattered us with the hopes of finding an harbour ... On this account I called the point of land to the north of it Cape Flattery.[4][5]
Japanese castaways in 1834[edit]
In 1834, the first Japanese known to have arrived in what is now Washington state arrived in a dismasted, rudderless ship that ran aground near Cape Flattery. The three survivors of the broken ship were held as slaves by the local Makah people before being taken to Fort Vancouver by William H. McNeill under orders from John McLoughlin.[6]

Kalaloch Campground, Olympic National Park, Washington State Coast
Kalaloch Campground is a popular campground on the Washington coast on highway 101, north of the Quinault Reservation. Kalaloch is a large campground with many sections, a great beach area, nearby store, and a couple of interesting short trails.
It is an amazing place to explore the beach and watch the sun set. Parts of the campground are open year round.
This video shows you what the campground looks like during low season when few people are camping.
