Mount Olympus (/oʊˈlɪmpəs, ə-/;[3] Greek: Όλυμπος Olympos, for Modern Greek also transliterated Olimbos, [ˈolimbos] or [ˈolibos]) is the highest mountain in Greece. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and Larissa, about 80 km (50 mi) southwest from Thessaloniki. Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, deep gorges, and exceptional biodiversity.[4] The highest peak, Mytikas, meaning nose, rises to 2,918 metres (9,573 ft).[1] It is one of the highest peaks in Europe in terms of topographic prominence.[2]
Olympus was notable in Greek mythology as the home of the Greek gods, on the Mytikas peak. Mount Olympus is also noted for its very rich flora, with several species. It has been a National Park, the first in Greece, since 1938. It is also a World Biosphere Reserve.[1]
Every year, thousands of people visit Olympus to admire its fauna and flora, tour its slopes, and reach its peaks. Organized mountain refuges and various mountaineering and climbing routes are available to visitors who want to explore it. The usual starting point is the town of Litochoro, on the eastern foothills of the mountain, 100 km from Thessaloniki, where, in the beginning of every summer, the Olympus Marathon terminates.

Climbing Mount Olympus in Greece /
Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and the home of the Gods according to the Greek mythology. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and Larissa, about 80 km southwest from Thessaloniki. The highest peak, Mytikas, meaning nose, rises to 2,918 m above the sea. It's a very beautiful mountain, with a lot of vegetation in the lower parts and steep and rocky peaks in the higher parts.
The most popular ascent route starts at around 1100 meters above the sea, at the Prionia area, located 20 km from the village of Litochoro. Walking up to the famous Olympus Mountain Refuge A (2100 m) and further to Scala Peak (2866 m) is not problematic – a large marked walking trail. You gain around 1800 m of elevation and although the trail is fairly steep at some parts, nothing more than a physical stamina is required. The last short stretch to the peak takes around 1h each way to complete – a quick decent of Scala, than traverse, ascent of the so called Kakoscala (The Evil Stairs) and final traverse/ascent of the ridge towards the peak point. There are some critical point where the attention must be at 100%, especially if the rocks are wet.
The other popular route coming from the Mouson (Musses) Plateau via the Louki Couloir is similar – a bit shorter and steeper, but about the same difficulty grade. There is an additional risk of rockfalls along the Louki route, especially during Spring and early Summer – quite often these could be caused by unexperienced climbers above you. So don`t forget your helmet if you climb Louki!
Our climb starts from Prionia area up to the Spilios Agapitos Refuge (Refuge A) where we stayed for the night and on the next day early in the morning we started to climb Mytikas through Scala route. We have descended it through Louki route and then we've cached the path from the Plateu of the Musses towards the Refuge A. Generally we had a good weather, but I strongly recomend to climb Mytikas early in the morning, because later in the day very often a fog from the sea rises towards the mountain and you cannot enjoy the views. A quickly formed rain showers and thunderstorms are also possible, so be prepared.

PALIOS PANTELEIMON, A LISTED VILLAGE
Now that you’re here, why not head up to Palios Panteleimon? This listed village has been called the Balcony of Olympus. You’ll travel back in time walking from the old village to the square filled with humongous plane trees. Oh, the views in this timeless place are stunning, too.
Platamonas Castle
The function of a castle is to dominate an area and Platamonas must have done this brilliantly as it overlooks a huge stretch of the coast of Pieria. The high walls and well-preserved central tower date from the 10th century. While excavations have unearthed Hellenistic remains from the 4th century BC, it is the Byzantine churches and traces of the 10th-century town and its subsequent incarnations that will grab your attention.
Trekking the Enipeas Gorge
Take the path along the gorge from Mylous near Litohoro to Prionia on the edge of Olympus National Park. The scenery is stunning and you’ll feel as if it was made just for you.
National Park and a unique ecosystem
At the heart of Olympus, the country’s single most important national park, you’ll commune with Greece’s ‘divine’ natural heritage. Ravines and ridges, gorges and plateaus, deep caves and daunting rocks will make impressive snapshots. But they’re not just photogenic. This mountain harbours more than 1,500 types of plants (some endemic), dozens of animal species and many rare birds.
The Mt Olympus Marathon
A modern-day marathon has revived the route of the ancient Greeks who, once a year and in honour of their beloved god Zeus, made the journey to the peaks of Mt Olympus. The marathons starts at the archaeological site of Dion, just 5m above sea level, and reaches a height of 2,780m, just below the famed ‘Throne of Zeus’.

Within it’s cobblestone paths, you will find nice touristic shops with various objects that really pull you in to take a closer look, even if you’re not the type who collects souvenirs from trips. In the central square, which is very picturesque and beautiful, you can have lunch, enjoy a cup of coffee, or a have a homemade sweet at one of the cafes. The perennial trees and the vines produce shade even at midday, cooling down visitors.
The tavernas are pretty nice, and are worth stopping at for lunch, even if you are traveling on the national highway of Thessaloniki – Larissa. It is a place with a nice vibe that can also serve as a base for exploring the surrounding area. An ideal destination for relaxation that combines views of mountains and sea.

From 17th April till 4th May 2017, Leuteris Paraskevas and Nikos Magitsis are travelling to Nepal in order to attempt on the one hand to break the 72 hours record covering one of the most extreme ultra marathon routes of the world, Annapurna Circuit, and on the other hand to conquer the top of Pisang Peak at 6100m altitude.
In the first part of three episodes we are witnessing team’s preparation in Athens, Volos, Larissa as well as on the mountains of Olympus and Parnitha.
This entire effort aims at raising money for contributing to the construction of new school and sports facilities, since the current buildings are no longer sufficient enough due to a great increase of number of children hosted by Kivotos.

Building Communities of Commons in Greece. A documentary on networks in Sarantaporo area.
Building Communities of Commons in Greece. A documentary on networks in Sarantaporo area.
Sarantaporo area, situated at the North of Greece, is an agricultural and husbandry region, also hit by the crisis. But even prior to the crisis, state’s attention to the area was poor. Youths were migrating to big cities or abroad. There was no Internet connection, and locals were isolated and deprived of basic services, e.g. medical aid.
At 2010 a group of people forms a community wireless network aiming to connect the villages among them and with the rest of the world. In time, and as the project matures, Sarantaporo.gr community aims even further. They want to be the catalyst so that the locals (re)organize cooperatives based on the wireless network, (re)enliven their economy, make it sustainable, more extrovert and independent of state and corporative control.
In doing so, they produce knowledge and build bridges between the hi-tech of a wireless network community and the real-life challenges of a rural community.
What are these challenges? How can a community be born and how are the existing ones transformed or affected during this course? What are the real-life stories of the people involved, one way or another, into this process? How can an effort in a small rural population in a remote part of crisis-ridden Greece relate to an ICT project in Catalonia University and -in a broader context- to the efforts to construct a new common ground for peoples in Europe? These are some of the inquiries we explore in the documentary.
In October 2015, the media arts collective Personal Cinema which produced the documentary, in collaboration with the Sarantaporo.gr team, launched a crowdfunding campaign at the Spanish crowdfunding platform goteo.org and succeeded to collect an amount of money that facilitated the realization of the documentary.

Ποιές είναι αυτές οι προκλήσεις; Πώς γεννιέται μια κοινότητα και πώς επηρεάζονται οι προϋπάρχουσες κοινωνικές δομές κατά τη διαδικασία αυτή; Ποιές είναι οι ιστορίες των ανθρώπων που εμπλέκονται με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο σ’ αυτή τη διαδικασία; Τί σχέση μπορεί να έχει ένα εγχείρημα σ’ έναν μικρό επαρχιακό πληθυσμό, σε μια απομακρυσμένη περιοχή της χτυπημένης από την κρίση Ελλάδας, με ένα πρόγραμμα ΤΠΕ (Τεχνολογίας Πληροφοριών & Επικοινωνιών) του πανεπιστημίου της Καταλονίας και - σε ένα ευρύτερο πλαίσιο - με τις προσπάθειες δημιουργίας ενός νέου κοινού εδάφους για τους λαούς της Ευρώπης;
