Olympus National Park, Litochoro, Pieria, Central Macedonia, Greece, Europe
In 1938, Olympus, the highest Greek mountain, the residence of the twelve ancient gods, was the first area which was declared as a National Park. About 50 years ago a special regime was enforced to protect this unique part of our country. The aim was the preservation of the natural environment; of the flora, fauna and natural landscapes, as well as of its cultural and other values. Scientific research had to be supported and people had to become aware of the environmental conditions. Furthermore tourism had to be developed in the wider area. Specific laws prohibit any kind of exploitation in the east side of the mountain, about 10,000 acres, which constitutes the core of the National Park. The wider area around it was designated as “peripheral zone of the National Park” so that its management and exploitation won’t affect negatively the protection of the core. Olympus is internationally known as for its important ecological characteristics and incomparable natural beauty as well as for its strong relationship with ancient Greek mythology. The importance of the National Park has been recognized not only in Greece and Europe but all over the world. In 1981 UNESCO declared “Olympus a Biosphere Reserve”. The European Community has included Olympus in the list of “The Most Important Bird areas of the European Community”.

Litochoro (Greek: Λιτόχωρο, Litóchoro; Katharevousa: Λιτόχωρον) is a town and a former municipality in the southern part of the Pieria regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it has been part of the Dio-Olympos municipality, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit.[2] It is located at the base of Mount Olympus, on the western shore of the Thermaic Gulf. The first recorded mention of Litochoro is in an account of a visit by Saint Dionysius (Greek: Άγιος Διονύσιος) to Mount Olympus in the 16th century.[3] The town is a popular destination for those wishing to climb Mount Olympus as almost all climbing routes begin to the southwest of the town. A famous son of the town was Christos Kakkalos, who ascended first Mount Olympos in 1913.

Litochoro (Λιτόχωρο) lies at the foot of the massif of Mount Olympus. The town is an ideal starting point for hiking, biking and excursions in the surrounding forests and valleys.
After short time, we reach the new monastery of Agios Dionysios in the former monastery property Skala in the valley of the river Enipeas which is still inhabited by a substantial number of monks.
Over a mountainous road with beautiful views of the coastline and through the wild and romantic valley we drive in the direction of Mount Olympus to the derelict old Agios Dionysios Monastery. It is located about 18 km from Litochoro at an altitude of 900 m and was destroyed in 1943 by the troops of the German occupation in order to stop the partisan struggle. Mount Olympus, Litochoro, Pieria, Central Macedonia, Greece, Europe
Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and Larissa, about 80 km (50 mi) southwest from Thessaloniki. Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, deep gorges, and exceptional biodiversity. The highest peak, Mytikas, meaning nose, rises to 2,918 metres (9,573 ft). It is one of the highest peaks in Europe in terms of topographic prominence. Olympus was notable in Greek mythology as the home of the Greek gods, on the Mytikas peak. Mount Olympus is also noted for its very rich flora, with several species. It has been a National Park, the first in Greece, since 1938. It is also a World Biosphere Reserve. Every year, thousands of people visit Olympus to admire its fauna and flora, tour its slopes, and reach its peaks. Organized mountain refuges and various mountaineering and climbing routes are available to visitors who want to explore it. The usual starting point is the town of Litochoro, on the eastern foothills of the mountain, 100 km from Thessaloniki, where, in the beginning of every summer, the Olympus Marathon terminates. The shape of Olympus was formed by rain and wind, which produced an isolated tower almost 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) above the sea, which is only 18 kilometres (11 mi) away at Litochoro. Olympus has many peaks and an almost circular shape. The mountain has a circumference of 150 kilometres (93 mi), an average diameter of 26 kilometres (16 mi), and 500 square kilometres (190 sq mi) of area. To the northwest lies the Vlach village of Kokkinoplou. The Makryrema stream separates Olympus from the massif of Voulgara. The villages Petra, Vrontou and Dion lie to the northwest, while on the eastern side there is the town of Litochoro, where Enipeas bisects the massif of Olympus. On its southeastern side, the Ziliana gorge divides Mount Olympus from Kato Olympos (Lower Olympus), while on its southwestern foothills, there are the villages Sykaminea and Karya. The Agia Triada Sparmou Monastery and the village Pythion lie to the west.
Olympus' dry foothills are known as the Xirokampi, containing chaparral and animals up to wild boar. Further east, the plain of Dion is fertile and watered by the streams which originate on Olympus.

Agios Dionysios Monastery, Olympus, Litochoro, Pieria, Central Macedonia, Greece, Europe
The monks abandoned the destroyed monastery and moved into the Metochion, the estate of the monastery. The Metochion was founded in 1650 and consisted, apart from the lands, of a church, the economic buildings and another building in which the monks lived, who took care of the farm. After the Second World War, this estate was gradually expanded into a monastery. The older part of the new monastery is equipped with a heavy iron door and thus separated from the rest of the system. It contains the cells of the monks, the refectory and the administrative building. As is usual with Greek Orthodox monasteries, the this part of the building is subject to the abaton (inaccessible) rule, prohibiting access to female visitors. Just outside are the stables, workshops and the cheese factory. All buildings outside the abaton, such as the new church or the museum, were built after 1985. The monastery church was built in classical orthodox style. An image of Saint Dionysius adorns the entrance. Inside, in addition to the usual sumptuous decor of an Orthodox church, there are some special features. It is striking that many chairs, standing consoles and other items are decorated with marquetry. The inserts are made of ivory or mother-of-pearl. On a small table stands an icon depicting the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Next to it is a little basket with notes and ball-point pens. Believers who want to make a request to the saint can put it here on paper.

Litochoro, orasul de la poalele Olimpului
A walk through Litochoro town, near the Olympus Mountain.
-Parcul National Olimp
-Cada lui Zeus
- plaja Litochorou, distinsa cu Blue Flag
- orasul Dion, aflat in apropiere, muzeul si situl arheologic de acolo (atractii principale: Templul Zeilor din Olimp, sanctuarul Zeitei Demetra, sanctuarul Zeitei Isis, teatrul grecesc, etc)
-manastirea Sf. Dionisie si Nicolae Litochorou
