Mysore Palace
The Palace of Mysore (also known as the Amba Vilas Palace) is a palace situated in the city of Mysore in southern India. It is the official residence of the Wodeyars - the erstwhile royal family of Mysore, which ruled the princely state of Mysore for over seven centuries. The palace also houses two durbar halls (ceremonial meeting hall of the royal court).
Mysore is commonly described as the City of Palaces, however, the term Mysore Palace specifically refers to one within the old fort. The Wodeyar kings first built a palace in Mysore in the 14th century, it was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current palace construction was commissioned in 1897, and it was completed in 1912 and expanded later around 1940.
Mysore palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India after Taj Mahal with more than 2.7 million visitors.[1] Although tourists are allowed to visit the palace, they are not allowed to take photographs inside the palace. Price of admission for foreign tourists is 200 INR., and for Indians 40 INR. All visitors must remove their footwear to enter the palace.
The regent of Mysore, Maharani Vani Vilas Sannidhna, commissioned a British architect, Henry Irwin, to build yet another palace in its place.[2] The construction was completed in year 1912. But slowly the beautification of the fort was also taken up and the inhabitants of the fort were slowly shifted out to newer Extension built outside. The present Public Durbar Hall wing was also added much later around 1940.

Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (Viveka Smaraka) - The Journey
Swami Vivekananda visited Mysore city in November 1892 as part of his parivrajaka wanderings through the length and breadth of India. Though at that time he was unknown monk and his stay at Mysore was relatively short, he, by virtue of his extraordinary personality, erudition and spiritual magnetism, attracted the attention of a large number of citizens that included most distinguished and notable noblemen of Mysore like the Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar and Sir Sheshadri Iyer, the then Dewan of Mysore State.
Swami Vivekananda in the initial days of his stay resided at the Niranjana Matha, on the Narayana Sastri Road that was centered around an ancient Shiva temple and located adjacent to the Dewan’s house, popularly called the Seshadri Bhavan. Later, he stayed for a few days with the Dewan as his guest. Deeply impressed by the brilliancy, wisdom, courage, patriotism and sincere adherence to monasticism of the young monk, the Maharaja requested the Swamiji to be his guest in the Palace itself. In the course of a few meetings with Swamiji, the Maharaja became so very close to him that he adored him. Further, the Maharaja readily offered to defray the expenses of Swamiji to participate in the World Parliament of Religions that was to be held at Chicago in 1893.
The deep personal friendship between Swami Vivekananda, the Maharaja and the Dewan continued even after Swamiji left for Chicago. Swamiji wrote letters to both these personalities even from America. In the letter written to the Maharaja from Chicago, Swamiji discussed the social and economic conditions prevailing in India then and suggested solution to raise the poor of India. He wrote “he one thing that is at the root of all evils in India is the condition of the poor. The poor in the West are devils; compared to them ours are angels, and it is therefore so much the easier to raise our poor. The only service to be done for our lower classes is to give them education, to develop their lost individuality. Give them ideas- that is the only help they require, and then the rest must follow as the effect. Ours is to put the chemicals together, the crystallization comes in the law of nature. My noble Prince, this life is short, the vanities of the world are transient, but they alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive”.
In his letter (1895) to the Dewan, Swamiji expressed his heartfelt gratitude saying,..To the people of Southern India I owe much and not a small part of that to Mysore
The Maharaja and the Dewan regarded Swamiji as, The man born for the redemption of India, and as one in whom was incarnate the nation spirit.
Swami Vivekananda’s impression on Mysore is reflected in his letter from USA, written on 31st August, 1894 to his dearest disciple Alasinga Perumal where he prophesied that, Mysore will be in time a great stronghold.
Niranjana Matha and its renovation: Setting up Swami Vivekananda Memorial Cultural Youth Centre
The Niranjana Matha and its environs acquired sanctity by virtue of Swami Vivekananda’s stay there. Many leading local citizens, realizing the urgent need to preserve and develop this fast deteriorating heritage monument, came together to work out a plan for establishing suitable memorial at this place in memory of Swami Vivekananda and a Trust by name, Swami Vivekananda Memorial Cultural Youth Centre, was registered in 2008. An overall concept of the project was worked out with concrete proposals and sent by the Trust to the Karnataka State Government for consideration. The idea was to convert this heritage place in to a Swami Vivekananda Memorial Cultural Youth Centre which is imbedded in the spirit and teachings of Swami Vivekananda for National Regeneration. In essence the Centre would reflect the vision of Swami Vivekananda for whom that regeneration could come only by:
suitable training to sincere workers
deluging the land with spiritual ideas and ideals
social reforms
imparting true education as the panacea of all social evils
uplift of the masses
going deeply into caste problems and its solution and
very importantly, uplift of women
Impressed by the Memorandum submitted by the Trust to the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri B S Yeddiyurappa, while on his visit to Mysore, the Chief Minister was pleased to spontaneously announce an immediate grant of Rs five crores to the said Project and this was also included in the relevant State Budget.
