Omagh is the county town of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Omagh is situated where the rivers Drumragh and Camowen meet to form the Strule. Northern Ireland's capital city Belfast is 68 miles to the east of Omagh, and Derry is 34 miles to the north.
Omagh contains the headquarters of the Western Education and Library Board, and also houses offices for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at Sperrin House, the Department for Regional Development and the Northern Ireland Roads Service at the Tyrone County Hall and the Northern Ireland Land & Property Services at Boaz House. The town is twinned with L'Haÿ-les-Roses, a town in the suburbs of Paris, France.
The town sprang up within the townland of Omagh, in the parish of Drumragh. Over time, the urban area has spread into the surrounding townlands. The Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh includes the cottage where Thomas Mellon was born in 1813, before emigrating to Pennsylvania, in the United States when he was five. His son Andrew W. Mellon became secretary of the US Treasury. The park is an open-air museum that explores the journey made by the Irish (specifically those from Ulster) to America during the 1800s.
The Gortin Glens Forest Park, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) north of Omagh is a large forest with many attractions, including a deer enclosure and many areas of natural beauty, including waterfalls, lakes, etc. Strule Arts Centre opened in 2007 is good example of urban renewal in Omagh town centre. Creating a modern civic building, in a newly created public space reclaimed from the formerly disused area, between the River Strule and High Street.
Omagh boasts over 20 playgrounds for children, and a large amount of green open area for all the public. The largest of these is the Grange Park, located near the town centre. Many areas around the meanders of the River Strule have also been developed into open areas. Omagh Leisure Complex is a large public amenity, near the Grange Park and is set in 11 hectares (27 acres) of landscaped grounds and features a leisure centre, boating pond, astroturf pitch and cycle paths.
Neither the town nor the district of Omagh has any railway service. Bus Services in Omagh are operated by Ulsterbus. Omagh is the main retail centre for Tyrone, as well as the West of Ulster (behind Derry and Letterkenny), due to its central location. In the period 2000–2003, over £80 million was invested in Omagh, and 60,960 m2 (656,200 sq ft) of new retail space was created. Shopping areas in Omagh include the Main Street Mall, Great Northern Road Retail Park and the Showgrounds Retail Park on Sedan Avenue in the town centre. Market Street/High Street is also a prominent shopping street, which includes popular high street stores such as DV8 and Primark.

N. IRELAND: IRISH PRESIDENT MARY MCALEESE VISITS OMAGH

Irish President Mary McAleese arrived in Omagh on Sunday to visit the friends and family of those injured or killed in yesterday's bomb blast which claimed the lives of 28 people.
The Irish president arrived at the Omagh leisure complex just minutes after Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness had entered the building.
The car bomb was the single most devastating terrorist attack in the last thirty years of Northern Ireland's bloody history, and the finger is being pointed at a dissident republican group opposed to the Good Friday agreement.
Mary McAleese saw for herself the extent of the devastation caused by yesterday's bomb that ripped through the busy high street in Omagh.
The clean up operation has started in earnest to clear up the debris from the blast that left 28 people dead and injured over 220.
Northern Irish police have already set up a task force to hunt down the bombers, who struck on the 29th anniversary of the first deployment of British troops on the streets of Northern Ireland.
The President expressed her horror at the bombing which she said occurred in spite of a majority vote for peace and diplomacy and a rejection of violence.

To talk about them, these are...I said just a moment ago on another radio programme that if they are capable of what they accomplished yesterday I think it's important for all of us to understand that they are capable of anything. These are people...there are no markers, try and measure them against standards of human decency, they are off the scale, they are off the Richter scale, and so I don't know what they are capable of. Omagh yesterday gives me some chilling, absolutely terrifying insight into what they are capable of, all I do know is they absolutely have to be stopped, they have to be stopped now, I don't know what they are planning for tomorrow, any more than you do Dennis, but it scares me what they could be planning, and they are planning in the teeth of a country North and South which committed itself to consensus based politics, committed itself to a decent way forward, which said in the referendum just gone past that we were going to try to work together in partnership, to honour each other, to respect each other to find a new decent way of living together, and these people whoever they are, whatever their number yesterday in the most callous and brutal way, they gave us their answer, now I think we have to give them their answer by stopping them. There are people who know who they are and the simplest way of stopping them is for those people to surrender their names to the authorities.

She then went on to visit friends and family of those killed or injured who are gathered inside the town's leisure complex awaiting news of their loved ones from the various hospitals in the area.
Earlier the leader of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams visited the scene and said he unreservedly condemned the terrorist bombing and urged people to move on and keep alive their hopes for real peace.
In the past Adams has categorically refused to condemn violence by the I-R-A or any other republican group.

What happened here was wrong I have condemned it without any equivocation whatsoever. It's now time to show solidarity with the families of the bereaved, of the injured, of the people of this town, the people of County Tyrone, and that's what we're here to do and it's a matter of I think getting political action, moving on, trying to ensure that the great expectation that people have in their hearts is not reduced by what has happened here

Saint Patrick Day in Belfast
Saint Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. St Patrick is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland. Most of what is known about him comes from his two works; the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish christians. Saint Patrick described himself as a most humble-minded man, pouring forth a continuous paean of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God.

Boomtown Rats singer and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof hands over a vast collection of letters, photographs and charity records from the historic Band Aid fundraiser of 1984.
The supergroup formed by Geldof to raise funds for the famine in Ethiopia brought together more than 40 top musical artists of the 1980s, including U2, Duran Duran, Ultravox, Bananarama and The Boomtown Rats.
