=========================================
A staple of the Omani dessert table, Omani halwa is especially popular during Ramadan. Both traditional and new styles of the national sweet are flying off the shelves of shops and factories around Muscat this month, while the secret recipes remain safely guarded by each halwa-making family.
“Omani halwa is a symbol of Omani culture and heritage and we have to take extremely good care to preserve it. Here, officials from various departments including the Ministry of Health and the municipality conduct regular inspections to ensure the quality,” says Younis Abdulrahim Al Balushi, the eldest son of Abdulrahim. Of course, he has added some diversity to his range of sweets, including special halwa that use a range of ingredients including dry fruits and nuts.
At the Barka Factory for Omani Halwa, they have halwa in three colours – white, black, and yellow –in five types numbered (No.1 to No.5) as per the quality and cost.
“Number One is priced high (OMR10 per kg) and has a larger quantity of ingredients like saffron, rosewater, dates and various nuts and dry fruits,” points out Younis. The prices range from OMR1.700 to OMR10, and the factory on an average makes around 200 to 300 kilograms of halwa daily.

More things to try if you are travelling to Oman:
The dessert is called halwa.
- Halwa and like--- Drink coffee with it? - [Man] Swallow it andthrow it with coffee.
Omani coffee, this is the way to do it.
- All right.
So they have one tin openhere that you can sample.
You can grab a spoon andit is made of a combination of starch and sugar and nuts.
It kind of has a jelly-ish texture to it.
Mm, kind of has a.
Kind of has a spice fragrance to it.
I think they use a lotof rosewater as well.
There's a lot of rosewaterthat's used as well as well as ghee which is the fat.
I'll just eat the whole thing.
Mmm, oh the nuts are really good in there.
It is pretty sweet, it'slike a sticky jelly.
It's almost like aroasted, burnt taste to it.
Maybe that comes from the sugar.
A little bit of spiced tinge as well.
Then you gotta follow that with coffee.
Yeah, so the coffee isnot sweet, but the halwa is very sweet and then youchase it with the coffee.

Barka:
Barka (Arabic: بركاء) is a coastal city in the region Al Bāţinah, in northern Oman.
Barka, 80km west of Muscat, is a thriving coastal town that has become something of a crossroads between the regional centes of Sohar and Rustaq and Muscat. It has to be said that the old part of town, near the sea, is looking a bit sad as the old quarters are being torn down to make way for a new coast road. In compensation, New Bahla has sprung up along the Muscat–Sohar Hwy with big shops and new restaurants transforming life in this once sleepy town.
Barka is famous for its halwa, a unique, laboriously made Omani confection. A pot from dedicated halwa shops in town costs from OR8.
There’s nowhere to stay in Barka itself, but two luxury resorts run by Al Nahda are nearby. If visiting just for the day, then nearby Naseem Gardens, off the main Muscat–Sohar Hwy, makes a pleasant place for a picnic. It hosts part of the annual Muscat Festival with shopping stands, fun fairs and live entertainment.

Barka, Oman Travel Video
Barka, Oman Travel Video - The main reason for visiting Barka, 80km west of Muscat, is to see bull-butting. This is where great Brahmin bulls, specially raised by local farmers, are set nose-to-nose in a push-and-shove that supposedly hurts neither party. To get to the bullring by car take the turning for Barka off the Muscat–Sohar Hwy and turn left at the T-intersection in the centre of town. After 3.4km you will see the concrete enclosure on your right. Bull-butting rotates from village to village along the Batinah coast on selected weekends. Ask locally to find out when and where, or chance your luck at the bullring on a Friday between November and March from 4pm to 6pm. There’s no admission charge.
Barka’s fort has an unusual octagonal tower. It has been closed for restoration for some time but is still impressive from the outside. To reach the fort from the town centre, turn right at the T-intersection; it’s 300m on the left.
Barka’s other point of interest is the 18th-century Bayt Nua’man, a restored merchant house that was closed at the time of writing. The turn-off for the house is signposted off the Muscat–Sohar Hwy, 7km west of Barka roundabout. There’s no public transport to the house.
Barka is famous for its halwa, a unique, laboriously made Omani confection that, served with small shots of Omani coffee, is an essential part of hospitality on formal occasions. The gelatinous sweet is quite distinct from the sesame confection known as halvah, found across the rest of the region. A pot from dedicated halwa shops in town costs from OR8.
There’s nowhere to stay in Barka, but the town makes an easy diversion en route for Sawadi or Sohar.

Making Omani halwa
Cooking demonstration at Muscat Festival 2009, Naseem Gardens venue. Guy stirring Omani halwa in a giant wok over a clay stove. He later stops to let another guy in a traditional Omani dishdasha (robe) and kuma (cap) take over. I think they were going to sell the freshly made halwa.

Oman Halwa | see the tradition of oman | best places
#Oman #SultanQaboos #Halwa
This video is about Oman traditions and halwa which they use in their all celebrations and how they make it and how they present it.
In Oman, the halwa is cooked in a very large copper pot, called mirjnl, for a couple of hours. It requires constant stirring which makes it a labor intensive process.
Halwa is served at all sorts of gatherings, usually with coffee (kahwa), and is enjoyed at weddings, funerals, birthday celebrations and during Ramadan. Omani halwa is also simply served as dessert with Omani coffee or sometimes just to show hospitality.
Usually Omani halwa is served in little bowls or cups and comes in many different varieties. This recipe does require constant stirring but thankfully won’t take a couple hours.
