Rails to Rubicon
This film preceded the book - Rails to Rubicon: a history of the Rubicon Forest - by Peter Evans. Light Railway Research Society of Australia, 1994.
A great demonstration of the role played by tramlines in Victoria's forests in the first half of the 20th century. The film also explores the early timber industry in the State's Central Highlands, the development of the Rubicon hydro-electric scheme, and the impact of the 1939 'Black Friday' bushfires.

Casa della Pace (House of Peace) Country Retreat, 9 Diamond Road, Crookwell, NSW 2583, Australia - with your hostesses Jan and Marg.
This is where Sandie and I often escape to from the BIG city of Sydney and spend a couple of relaxing days every month or so.
The two storey rammed earth house is nestled in an acre of beautiful landscaped gardens, on 50 acres of pastures and natural bush. Kangaroos often visit, and an abundance of native birds enjoy the garden.
'Casa della Pace' means 'house of peace' in Italian, and that's you'll find there when you visit. The stars at night are amazing, and birdsong is about the only sound you'll hear.
There are two bedrooms available. Both are roomy, comfortable and have lovely views of pasture, gum trees, grazing sheep, and distant hills. Bathroom is shared with separate toilet.
Your hostess, Jan, loves serving delicious cooked breakfasts, but you can have more simple fare. There is a bistro and cafe in Crookwell but you are welcome to join the ladies for dinner if you wish. They love entertaining and would enjoy your company. (Sandie and I have had many enjoyable meals there).
Casa della Pace is a dog friendly house. They have three pooches who love a pat, and you are welcome to bring your doggie friend/s too. The gardens are fenced, and dogs are welcome inside. (Sandie and I take our aging Husky Shakira with us for weekends.
Casa della Pace is only 10 minutes from the friendly town of Crookwell, home of the Lindner Sock Factory and Shop which sells the most comfortable and long lasting socks you'll ever wear.
The area is known for sheep and potatoes, and the scenery is gentle rolling hills and farms dotted with bush and dams.
There are a number of other interesting towns nearby such as Gunning and Taralga, and many scenic drives.
Historical Goulburn is 40 minutes away, and our nation's capital Canberra is only an hour and half from here. Wombeyan Caves is also a little over an hour's drive.

Melbourne to Bright via Ned Kelly in Glenrowan
We were looking for a place to go not far from Melbourne for a weekend away. We had heard about how beautiful Bright is any time of the year and decided that it sounded like the perfect place to go for a couple of nights. We checked out the available camping site options for putting up a tent and close to town. We booked 2 nights in the Bright caravan park the week before.
Bright, Victoria is just over 3 hours drive from Melbourne, 7 hours drive from Sydney, 5 hours drive from Canberra and 12 hours drive from Adelaide. Bright is situated on the Great Alpine Road (B 500) about 75 kms from the Hume Highway (M31) which is the main road connecting Melbourne to Sydney.
We stopped in Glenrowan and had a look around and took some photos of the big Ned Kelly sculpture standing in the street.
After putting up the tent in Bright and then headed to the nearby Bright Brewery for a sampler of their beer.

Jeremy Green: The Deep-Water Graveyard
The settlement of Western Australia meant that an increasing number of ships were sailing into port. Some of these ships were incapable of carrying on due to factors like age and storm damage, and so were being abandoned on pristine beaches. This caused unrest within the local community as it ‘didn’t look good’ to have wrecked ships lining the coast.
The Government acted on this unrest by designating a dumping area in Cockburn Sound but this caused further problems. It was then decided that the wrecks would instead be dumped in an area of 100m deep water, 10-15km south west of the west end of Rottnest Island.
Ships that weren’t fit to carry on were employed as hulks and stored coal or supplies to service other ships. Eventually, they became so rotten that they were deemed a danger to the port, at which point they were taken to the Graveyard.

Italy: Trial Preview: case against three Vatican Radio Station officials postponed
(12 Mar 2001) Italian/Nat
xfa
A court in Rome has announced that the case against three Vatican Radio Station officials is to be postponed until the autumn on Monday.
The hearing opened Monday morning as the officials faced criminal charges for allegedly polluting the air with electromagnetic waves, injuring individuals in a community on the outskirts of Rome.
The Judge immediately announced that there was a problem owing to Lack of notification and that the case would be postponed till September or October
The three Vatican Radio officials are facing criminal charges for allegedly polluting the air with electromagnetic waves.
It is claimed the electromagnetic waves from the Vatican's radio station injured
individuals in a community on the outskirts of Rome.
The sprawling northern Rome countryside community of Cesano has become the site of a tug of war between Church officials, residents, environmentalists and the Italian state.
Since 1951, Vatican Radio has been transmitting the Pope's message all over the world from Santa Maria di Galeria, 18 kilometres north of Rome.
At that time, there were three antennas and only a few residents.
Today, the same area has become a forest of 58 antennas that broadcast via short and medium range in 37 languages to 80 million listeners all over the globe.
More than 100,000 residents now reside next door to the transmission centre.
In Cesano, less than two kilometres away from the radio transmission center, locals fear that the antennas are making them, and especially their children, sick.
The crisis has been growing since 1998 when Italy reduced the intensity of electromagnetic fields to a level lower than other European Community members.
The Vatican broadcaster has not yet agreed to adhere to these restrictions and contends that their transmissions meet international standards.
Cesano resident and technical spokesperson for the Northern Rome Committee against electromagnetic pollution, Rafaele Capone, says that the legal limit is frequently surpassed.
By Italian law, transmissions should not surpass 6 volts per meter.
Augusto and Maria Rossi are the parents of three and a half year old Flavia who got leukemia at the age of 20 months.
They are sure that electromagnetic exposure is the cause of the sickness.
A study done by the Lazio region in the Rossi family home found electromagnetic levels to be nearly three times the legal limit.
Flavia's father is very worried about the correlations between infant leukemia and electromagnetic radiation.
While their daughter is still alive, Agnese Amadeo, another Cesano resident is not so fortunate.
One year ago, her 10 year old daughter Giulia died after suffering from leukemia for two years.
Like the other residents, she wants the antennas to be moved.
The three top officials of Vatican Radio to go to trial are the Rev. Pasquale Borgomeo, the station's director and a Jesuit priest recently named cardinal by Pope John Paul II; the Rev. Roberto Tucci, president of the station's management committee, also recently elevated to Cardinal, and Constantino
Pacifici, a layman and top technician.
Their elevations to cardinal make them subject to the laws of the Vatican state, not Italian law.
It is one of the few cases in decades in which the Vatican has sought to keep its officials immune from Italian law.
Father Pasquale Borgomeo broke his silence with the media on Friday in Rome refuting the idea that Vatican Radio was trying to pull out of the trial, but instead indicated that blame for this problem should also be placed on the Italian state.
