The Legendary White Snake of Omiwa jinja!
Ōmiwa jinja, also known as Miwa Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in Sakurai, Nara, Japan. The shrine is noted because it contains no sacred images or objects because it is believed to serve Mount Miwa, the mountain on which it stands. For the same reason, it has a worship hall, but no place for the deity to be housed. In this sense, it is a model of what the first Shinto shrines were like. Ōmiwa Shrine is one of the oldest extant Shinto shrines in Japan and the site has been sacred ground for some of the earliest religious practices in Japan. Because of this, it has sometimes been named as Japan's first shrine. Ōmiwa Shrine is a tutelary shrine of the Japanese sake brewers.
Ōmiwa Shrine's history is closely related to Mount Miwa and the religious practices surrounding the mountain. In the early Kofun period, Yamato kings and leaders had shifted their attention to kami worship on Mount Miwa, and Ōmiwa Shrine was the major institution for this branch of worship. The style of Shinto surrounding Miwa became later known as Miwa Shinto, and is set apart from previous practices by a more structured theological philosophy.
The shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers be sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines, including Ōmiwa.
Ōmiwa was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Yamato province.
From 1871 through 1946, Ōmiwa was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank among government supported shrines.

Omiwa Jinja Shrine(大神神社)- YAMATO UNKNOWN ORIGIN
A traditional shrine that appears many times in ancient myths. It is said to be the oldest shrine in Japan. Mount Miwa was worshiped as a deity, and still retains this form of primitive Shintoism. The shrine's grounds are large, with several places to see dotting the foot of Mount Miwa. It is a good idea to take your time to visit each location while soaking in the power of Mount Miwa and the faith of the common people, unchanged for thousands of years.

■About YAMATO
More than ten centuries ago, a capital of Japan existed here.
Several generations of kings of the “Yamato Dynasty” ruled here and expanded their influence outward.
Eventually, Yamato became a word meaning the whole of Japan.
The foundation of Japan was built here.
This ancient capital - older than Kyoto or Nara - did not develop as other ancient capitals did, and thus was left largely untouched.
Feel the unknown mystery of the history of Japan in this quiet, untraveled location.

I woke up to light drizzle in Nara. The TV indicated Typhoon Saola was approaching Okinawa and was drawing the clouds over western Japan into its counter-clockwise whirl. Breakfast at 5:30 a.m. from the 7-Eleven across the street – nothing else was open. Today, I move hotel 10-doors up the street for 1 night since the Washington Hotel had only 2 nights open and couldn’t accommodate me for 3 nights. Short 30-min train ride to Sakurai, another place which has lots of things-to-see associated with being the cradle of Japan’s civilization. The Sakurai tourist center didn’t have any Engish maps nor English speaking staff but the lady was very helpful. With both our limited foreign language skills I managed to figure out some plans for today. The sights I wanted to see are far apart and requires train or bus rides so I decided on a limited plan for today’s BURA-BURA. The lady said if I hurry, I can catch the next train to visit the Omiwa Shrine. While I was waiting for the train, she rushed to the boarding platform with a coupla xeroxed maps she managed to find. Wow, over/beyond service! Caught the train – 10 minutes or so to Miwa. Managed to find the Omiwa Shrine which is among the oldest shrines in Japan. Being a Saturday, it was quite busy with weddings and kids decked out in their grandest kimonos. Saw a nice new quaint restaurant just outside the temple grounds. Took a peek and the young couple running the place greeted me at the door. AHA, got caught peeking so I went in. No English menu and very limited English spoken but I managed to get their suggestion. They serve somen and they had this whirlpool on the table. You grab some somen, drop it into the whirling cold water and catch a chopstick full of somen, dip it in the sauce and eat it. After a while I got tired of fishing for somen so I just dipped it directly into the sauce and finished my lunch. Very interesting and delicious lunch. The Yamanobe No Michi, a historic hiking rode/trail, runs past the Shrine. It is one of the oldest road mentioned in Japanese history. It starts from Tokyo and goes through small villages and past lots of historic places. I had a hard time finding the trail at Omiwa Shrine, asked about a dozen folks. Didn’t find any English speaking person but finally a temple maiden in the white/orange dress (actually I spoke to a couple of them) helped me and with finger pointing, etc, managed to find the trail, a good portion of which is now part of small car lanes running through interesting subdivisions. I started to walk it to Sakurai City station, about 3 kilometers or usually a 45-minute walk. It started drizzling, I lost my way many times, asked to be pointed back to the trail and so went zig-zagging around. It took me over an hour in the light rain to reach Sakurai station. By then it was 2 p.m. so I went wiki-wiki back to Nara on the next train. Checked into my hotel room, went botcha and looked for a place to eat. Finally settled on an (another) okonomiyaki place several doors down the street.
