That Brahmin became a Brahmarakshasa and started troubling the king. In order to purify himself for the killing of a Brahmin, he was advised to construct a temple to Lord Shiva. He brought a Shivalinga from Kashi, and the temple was built and named Omkareshwara. Depicting both Islamic and Gothic architecture, Omkareshwara temple was built in 1820 by Lingarajendra as a dedication to Lord Shiva.
A water tank in this temple houses many fresh water fish and adds to the beauty of this temple. Madikeri is a hill station town in Madikeri taluk in Karnataka state, India. Also known as Mercara, it is the headquarters of the district of Kodagu (also called Coorg). it is also known as the Scotland of India. Madikeri was formerly known as Muddu raja keri. Muddurajakeri which means Mudduraja's town, was named after the prominent Haleri king, Mudduraja who ruled Kodagu from 1633 to 1687. According to Puranas, Kodava is the redefined name of Krodhadesa meaning Land of Anger, said to have been inhabited by the Kodava tribe. Some historians believe that it is named after the River Cauvery. Coorg was under the Gangas rule during 9th and 10th centuries and Cholas in the 11th century followed by Hoysalas. Later Coorg was relatively independent under Haleri Rajas until British occupied the region in 1834. Coorg was a separate state before its merger with Karnataka in the year 1956. The form of the name often used in English, Mercara, is derived from Madikeri. Madikeri lies in the Western Ghats and is a popular hill station. The nearest cities are Mangaluru to the west, and Mysuru to the east. Madikeri lies on the Karnataka State Highway 88 that runs from Mangaluru to Mysuru. It is 120 km from Mysuru and 136 km from Mangaluru. From Bengaluru, the state capital of Karnataka, At a distance of 265 km from Bangalore, 117 km from Mysore, 132 km from Mangalore, 322 km from Coimbatore & 362 km from Kochi.

You cannot separate C from C, coffee without Coorg and Coorg without coffee is incomplete, well Coorg is renowned tourist destination in South India. This is the first video of three part series on Coorg. Today we are going to cover Omkareshwar Temple, Coorg Fort and Abbey Falls. We are going to explore other beautiful destinations in the coffee town.
Omkareshwar Temple was built King Lingarajendra II in Gothic and Islamic architecture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva means Omkar. The king turned arrogant with power and a wise Bramhana advised him to stop his misdeeds. But in return the king killed the Bramhana and his soul started haunting him due to which wise man suggested him to install Linga as a penance so this linga was brought from Kashi and installed here. Thereafter the king was relieved from the haunting. Photography and videography is strictly prohibited inside but your eyes are good enough to capture the beauty.
Huge and vast area, a musuem, Ganesha temple and a remains of a temple which are not mentioned anywhere, church are some of the highlights of the Coorg Fort. Parts of it is converted into Government offices.
Abbey Falls is a beautiful fall in the mid of woods, covered with wild flowers, coffee plantations and amazing biodiversity. This invites thousands of tourists to the fall. The flow in the rains is amazing but you can enjoy it in May as well.

The Omkareshwara temple in Madikeri was built by Lingarajendra II in 1820 in the Mumammadan style of architecture with a dome in the center and four turrets at four corners. Temple dedicated to Shiva, was built in the 19th century in a mix of Gothic and Islamic styles. Legend has it that the King put to death a Brahmin to fulfill his political ambitions and in order to appease the spirit of the Brahmin, the temple was built.
That Brahmin became a Brahmarakshasa and started teasing the king with troubles. It left the king only when the king brought a Shivalinga from Kashi and installed it after building a temple. The shivalinga was named as Omkareshwara and regular rituals were performed. The bars of the windows of the temple were made of Panchaloha and an alphabet lim has been placed in between the bars

There is a pool in front of the temple with tons of fresh water fishes in it. The temple has four minarets around it and a dome in the center. The temple is Similar to a Muslim dargah with a Linga installed near the entrance door. The King inscribed the history of the temple in a copper plate which is fixed at the entrance door frame. There is a water tank in front of the temple and in the middle of the tank there is a mantapam connected by a causeway. There are plenty of fish in the tank which is an attraction for children.

The Omkareshwara Temple was constructed by King Lingarajendra II in the 18th century. Legend has it that the temple was built by the king as a form of penance.
The story goes around that the king had killed a Brahmin to fulfil his political ambitions. However, the king started to have nightmares for his cruel deed. In order to free himself from the nightmares, the King sought the advice of a few wise men. They asked the king to build a temple of Lord Shiva to regain his mental peace.

Madikeri Fort, a historical landmark of Coorg. Is located at the centre of Madikeri town. The fort and Sri Omkareshwara Temple are the most famous tourist attractions of Madikeri.
The Madikeri Fort was constructed in the later part of the 17th century by Muddu Raja, the then king of Coorg. The town named as ‘Muttu Raja Giri’ is now called as Madikeri.
The Palace inside the Fort, now houses the offices of the Deputy Commissioner. The brick and mortar Palace was built in 1814 by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II. In the inner Fort, a temple of Virabhadra was converted by the British into an Anglican Church. The Church now houses a museum with a repository of many antiques of Coorg. The original mud fort was rebuilt in stone by Tipu Sultan. Two life-size elephants made of mortar, catch the eye of the visitor on entering the Fort. The other buildings inside the fort include the Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, the Kote Maha Ganapathi temple and the district prison.
