Ethiopia - Hamar market in Turmi, lower Omo valley
People of the Hamar tribe around Turmi, in the lower Omo valley in south Ethiopia get together to sell animals, wood, hay, herbs and other items as well as to socialize. The lower Omo valley is one of the last areas in Africa where people are living in a very traditional way. Women are often still dressed in animal skins, while men have a special clay coverage on their heads.

Discover Ethiopia with Mereja TV: Driving through Omo Valley, Debub Omo Zone, southern Ethiopia
The Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region has a population of around 600,000 including the World Heritage Site the Lower Valley of the Omo. The Omo valley has been named as a living museum with around 18 ethnic groups representing four of Africa’s major linguistic groups. The Omotic-speakers are endemic to the south Omo and include the Ari, Maale, Daasanach, and the Hamar-Banna. The market towns offer the best opportunities for meeting local tribes people as they go about their trade and business. The villages are the best places to witness traditional ceremonies and gain a better appreciation for the diverse cultures and ways of life. The best way to explore this region is by road between July and March when time is spent visiting the local markets or exploring the remoter villages.

Omo valley People
Ethiopia is a museum of peoples. INCREDIBLE pictures of the lost world of the Omo Valley tribes allow a glimpse into one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the world. Tribes of Omo Valley Hammer; Ethiopian Tours with FANOS Ethiopia Tours
The Hamer have rites of passage called Bull Jumping ceremony (Ukuli Bula) which represent a life-changing event for the young man (Ukuli) who passes from boyhood in to adulthood. This rite of passage must be done before a man is permitted to marry. This is a ceremony which determines whether a young Hamer man is ready to make the social jump from immature member of his society to responsibility of marriage and raising a family.

The Omo Valley
The Lower Omo River in southwest Ethiopia is home to eight different tribes whose population is about 200,000.
They have lived there for centuries.
However, the future of these tribes lies in the balance. A massive hydro-electric dam, Gibe III, has now been built on the Omo river in order to support vast commercial plantations that are forcing the tribes from their land.
Salini Costruttori, an Italian company, started construction work on the dam at the end of 2006, and it is now complete. The government is now planning to build Gibe IV and Gibe V.
This will destroy a fragile environment and the livelihoods of the tribes, which are closely linked to the river and its annual flood.

Hamar Market - Ethiopia
TRUE MY EYES PRODUCTIONS
Selim Fehmi Ozcan
Country: Ethiopia
Region: Omo Valley
Town: Turmi
Description: This documentary gives a tour true my eyes of the weekly Hamar Market that takes place in the town of Turmi in the Omo Valley. Every week, hundreds of Hamar people come from around the Hamar region to visit the market to sell their goods or to buy the good of others. Most of the people will need to cover many miles to reach the market from their village so they need to begin walking 1-2 days before the day of the market in order to cover the distance by foot. Most of the business is done in trade as hard currency is not common among the tribes. The goods at the market included shoes, beaded jewelry, wood carvings, sugar cane, various grains and my favorite, raw honey.

Faces of the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia
One of the most extraordinary experiences of my lifetime will be traveling to Ethiopia and touring the Omo Valley in the southern region of the country. The places and faces that I encountered inspired The Syncopated New York 2013: Ethiopia Cultural Awareness and Exchange Program.
This experience has left a permanent imprint that will inspired me to travel to different countries to experience more extraordinary places and faces.
