Split, Croatia ???????? Tour this Ancient White City on the Sea
Split, Croatia is one of my favorite cities in the world. It's on the coast of Croatia, the Dalmatian Coast. The place is like a fantasy, and most of the time you'll be walking within the walls of an ancient Roman palace. Step outside of it and you're right next to sapphire blue waters. Take a stroll up a nearby hill and see the whole city with a coastal mountain backdrop, orange rooftops, and a perfect setup along the coast. Split is unique. Take a tour of this city with us today as we take you through Diocletian's Palace, some Croatian beaches, Croatian street food, and more. Spit, Croatia is the Croatian city that needs to be on your radar.

CROATIA VLOG || A Long Weekend In Split, Hvar & Dubrovnik || Run Char
Croatia Travel Vlog (Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik) Summer 2017
In June 2017, I went to Croatia for 5 days with my sister. We split our time between Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik. Here are some of the things we did during our stay:
SPLIT:
Croatia's second-largest city, Split, has the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. It's home to dozens of bars, restaurants, shops, markets and beaches, whilst still having thousands of years worth of history to explore.
Places to visit include The Cathedral of St Domnius, Diocletian's Palace, Marjan Forest Park, Peristyle Square, Basement Halls of Diocletian's Palace and The Markets.
For excellent views of Split, hike up Marjan Forest Park or pay a small fee to climb the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius (181 step stairs to the top).
There are also small beaches, museums, the infamous Krka Waterfalls and wineries.
HVAR:
Hvar (probably my favourite place in Croatia) is a stunning, small bay town a few hours away from the mainland. Hvar has a number of beautiful beaches, lots of nice restaurants/cafes and great nightlife!!!
My top recommendations for Hvar, is walking/climbing from the town centre to the Fortress. Here you can see incredible views of Hvar and the bay area.
The blue and green cave tour is a day trip that's also worth doing! The first stop on the tour is the Green Cave, where we got the chance to get out and swim. It was then off to the hidden inlet called Stiniva for some sunbathing and swimming, before making our way to the Blue Cave (which was INCREDIBLE!!). After seeing the Blue Caves, wee were taken to the island of Vis and a fishing village, Komiza, before ending the day on the Paklinski Islands.

DUBROVNIK:
We only had an evening and morning in Dubrovnik, but managed to see most of its Old Town. Encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th Century, Dubrovnik's Old Town is filled with small markets, bars, museums and restaurants.
Other points of interest include Fort Minceta and Fort Bokar, Pile Gate, the numerous walking tours (including ghost tours, game of thrones tour and old vs new city tours) and the stunning bay area.
It was really easy (and fairly cheap) to travel between the Islands and mainland.
Hope you enjoy this and please like/subscribe for more videos soon.

Our visit Split travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to local Croatian food, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day and by night including visiting palace, mausoleums, cathedrals, ruins and more. We cover activities you won't find in a typical Split tourism brochure, Split itinerary or Split, Croatia city tour also known as Grad Split Hrvatska.
15 Things to do in Split, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Grad Split Hrvatska):
It is no secret that Croatia is one of our favourite countries to travel in Europe, and Split is a destination that can’t be missed.
Set in and around the walls of an ancient Roman palace looking out to the Adriatic Sea, Split is what travel dreams are made of: sunny, scenic, and filled with historic sights and culinary delights.
The streets are marble maze where pieces of history lay hidden around every corner, the harbour is lined with cafes and palm trees drawing out locals and visitors to promenade in the sunshine, and let’s not forget about the abundance of restaurants serving up fresh seafood and Croatian dishes with a contemporary twist!
Join us in this travel guide as we take you on a tour of the city and show you 15 things to do in Split, Croatia!
Diocletian was a Roman Emperor who ruled from the years 284 to 305. He was born in Dalmatia, and when it came time to build his retirement residence, he chose this very spot which today forms the Old Town of Split.
It made sense to start our tour of Split here. First, the bell tower for a quick look at the city from above. Next to the bell tower, you have the Mausoleum of Diocletian. Emperor Diocletian was a persecutor of Christians, and ironically, his mausoleum is now a cathedral named after Saint Domnius, who was martyred by Diocletian.
We walked over to the Temple of Jupiter. Interesting fact: the sphinx you see at the entrance was one of the twelve sphinxes brought from Egypt by Emperor Diocletian.
The crypt sits directly underneath the cathedral and it’s dedicated to Saint Lucy, another victim of the religious persecutions under the rule of Diocletian.
We walked through the underground market which is open to the public free of charge. This market is also located at basement level and it is filled with vendors selling all types of artwork and souvenirs. We also walked up the Marjan Steps for scenic views of Split.
Marjan Hill is 178 meters high and it takes 314 steps to reach the highest point. It’s a very pleasant walk with lots of greenery, and along the way we even came across an old stone church.
Then on the way back down the hill, we went for a walk through Varoš.
And while we were in Split, we also made time to visit a statue with a rather famous toe. This is Grgur Ninski. He was a medieval Croatian bishop who introduced the national language in the religious services.
Now a travel tip: while you’re out strolling down the Rive Promenade, you can also access Matejuška Port, which is a small harbour for small boats used mainly by the local fishermen. This particular spot offers some really nice views looking back on Split.
That’s a wrap for our travel guide to Split! If you have ideas of things to do in Split please share those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.

Split, Croatia
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with just over 200,000 inhabitants, and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. Once merely considered by some as just transit point – with excellent transport connections by bus, sea, air and train, it’s easy to travel to and from the city – it is deservedly becoming a destination in its own right.
There are some fantastic sights in the city, both Roman and more modern, excellent options for dining, drinking and nightlife, plenty of beach opportunities and lots of choice for those wanting day trips.
Places featured:
Diocletian’s Palace:
Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian’s palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast.Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome.
Today the Illyrian province is part of Croatia. The so-called palace was a massive structure and contains not only the palace itself but also buildings, intended for housing military garrison. The whole complex occupied around 30,000 square meters. Today these ruins lie in the heart of the city of Split in Croatia.
The Riva:
The Riva started to look the way it does today two centuries ago, when the French, in time of Napoleon ruled these parts through Marshal Marmont. Today this promenade is the cities living room, the most popular and most important public place in Split. In the meantime it has been widened and reconstructed several times, but it was always blessed with the most spectacular set, the south facade of the Diocletian Palace, with the entrance into the Substructures, and later on with the buildings that were built west of the Palace, also the Franciscan monastery with the church of St. Francis, and the Bajamonti Dešković Palace and last but not least the Port Authorities building on the east end.
Riva today is a pedestrian heaven, thrusting with Cafés and restaurants, an ideal place for having your morning or afternoon coffee, or for an evening out with friends over drinks. Riva is the stage of the city life of Split, a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events, boisterous Split carnival, as well as the stage for meeting Split sportsmen after countless successes, such as Goran Ivanišević, Hajduk football club players and Jugoplastika basketball players, Olimpic medal winners... Riva is also a political forum, with decades of political opportunities being depicted through mass rallies. Naturally, Riva is always at its best in time of Sudamja, a celebration dedicated to St. Domnius, the patron saint of Split.
Marjan Hill:
Every time you want to take a break from the hectic lifestyle of the city is enough to take a little walk and head towards Marjan. Marjan is an integral part of the city center that extends from the Marmont Street and continues to the west. It’s long over 3 km. In 1964 it was declared a park and since then is considered a protected part of Split. This hills and its forests are the lungs of the city, the most popular place to escape from the city bustling and chaotic pace of life during the high season in July and August.

Trogir & Krka, Two of the Best Day Trips from Split
Croatia has been a hot spot for the last couple of years thanks to a little show called.... Game of Thrones. Even if you aren't huge fans like we are, there's a reason these incredibly well preserved cities were chosen as their filming locations.
Split
Split is Croatia's second largest city, and the major jumping off point if you're planning a trip to the islands. But, spending a few days on the mainland will be worth your while, not only for the city of Split, but also two really awesome day trips.
Split is a great home base because of it's transportation options, from freeways, to trains, to ferries. But, make sure to spend a day wandering around the streets of old town, check out Diocletian's Palace, and all of the Game of Thrones spots. After you've made your way through the city, you will emerge at the Riva, a palm tree lined promenade running along the sea and by the harbor.
Trogir
Split airport is actually about 25km from the city of Split, but it's only 3k from this tiny gorgeous incredibly well preserved town called Trogir.
You can do it as a day trip from Split, but I would spend either your first or last night there since it's so close to the airport.
Heading straight to Trogir from the Airport, take the local bus # 37, and leave the rental car for later. It will only cost about $2.
Arriving in Trogir, you will find yourself just across the bridge from Old Town.
Trogir's medieval city center is a Unesco World Heritage site, with every path leading to a new interesting and incredibly well preserved site. Plus, the promenade along the water has some great restaurants with wonderful views.
The island is actually pretty small and can be seen in a couple of hours, which leads most people to make it a day trip from Split. We decided to spend the night, have the streets to ourselves first thing in the morning, and avoid the huge summer crowds.
The places you won't want to miss are the Radovan Portal, St. Lawerence Cathedral, the town loggia, and Kamerlengo fortress. You will recognize many of these sites because the city has been used as a filming location many times, most prominently in Game of Thrones.
Krka
Krka National Park, with it's famous waterfalls is just an hour drive from Split.
The easiest way to get to Skradinski buk, the waterfall you see in all of those instagram pictures, is from Skradin, where you can grab a ferry. It only leaves once an hour though, so make sure to check the schedule before you go.
After a short walk from the ferry dock, you'll find the incredibly gorgeous falls!
Per usual in Europe, the water is COLD! But, in the summer heat, it's not miserable. The entrance to the water is a bit steeper and rockier than I had expected, so be cautious if going with kids.
Make sure you check the return ferry times too because they also only leave once an hour, and the last ferry is probably earlier than you would expect.

Eric Clark's Travel Videos - Split Croatia - Getting from the Split Airport to the city of Split
This is a detailed video of how to get from the airport in Split to the city of Split. It shows you 3 options (minus renting a car) to get to the City. You can take a taxi which is most expensive. You can take the city bus which takes over 1.5 hours or you can take the express bus that gets you there in about 30 minutes and is a direct shot with no stops. Its is cheap as well. Watch the video. It will show you where the bus is, where to pick it up at and The BUS SCHEDULE so you know when it will run so you can coordinate it with your flight arrivals. = ) A great video if you are needing to get to the heart of the city of Split.

I did the Split Culinary Food Tour!
I just did the Culinary Food Tour run by Split Walking Tours in Croatia. It was great! Definitely worth doing if you are in Split and you love your seafood.
We had the opportunity to choose the seafood & vegetables we wanted fresh from the markets with the help our guide Jelena and recommended the Croation dish that could be prepared by the chef.
I chose the Croatian Tuna for entree with a wild asparagus salad and the Stingray for my main with Swiss chard. Both were delicious and something I was trying for the very first time.
I highly recommend this tour if you are in Split.

GAME OF THRONES LOCATION CITY OF MEEREEN | THE DIOCLETIAN'S PALACE IN SPLIT CROATIA
After a busy day in the beach the next day we decided to take a stroll and see for ourselves the very known tourist destination in Split, Crotia the Diocletian's Palace. Its very hot that day since we went there around 1pm but still you can see a lot of tourist and when we went to see the golden gate Leila was frustrated because she did not see any gold hehehe. The men who are in Roman soldier attire are there as part of the school activity but you can have a picture with them and you give them tip.
This place was featured in the famous HBO tv series Games of Thrones and its the City of Meereen.
Diocletian's Palace is an ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD, which today forms about half the old town of Split, Croatia. While it is referred to as a palace because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison.
The complex was built on a peninsula six kilometers southwest from Salona, the capital of Dalmatia (Roman province), one of the largest cities of the late empire with 60.000 people and birthplace of Diocletian. The terrain around Salona slopes gently seaward and is typical karst, consisting of low limestone ridges running east to west with marl in the clefts between them. Today the remains of the palace are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
