Italy: Migrants sleep rough in search for seasonal jobs near Saluzzo
A recent influx of migrants into the Piedmont region of northern Italy means that up to 400 are now sleeping rough in the town of Saluzzo, according to local authorities, as seen in footage from Thursday.
Saluzzo has been host to close to 1,000 migrants with some living in shelters provided by the city hall and others sleeping on roadsides.
We feel cold and when there is the rain we don’t have any place to go, said a migrant from Gambia.
While migrants have been struggling with an insufficient number of shelters, harsh weather conditions, and limited access to seasonal jobs, the small Italian town is figuring out ways to walk the fine line between hospitality and exploitation of newcomers.
The surplus of workers generates exploitation, said member of the Anti-Racist Committee of Saluzzo, Emanuele.
We must take care of these workers who travel across Italy looking for seasonal jobs, he stated.
Saluzzo’s Mayor Mauro Calderoni was more optimistic saying, the variety of crops is growing so there’s a greater need for workers.

Saluzzo - Un'antica capitale
- La Fondazione -
L'epoca di fondazione di Saluzzo è sconosciuta. L'esistenza della città è attestata per la prima volta nel 1028 in un atto in cui è citato un castrum, possedimento del marchese di Torino, Olderico Manfredi, della famiglia degli Arduinici. Tuttavia rinvenimenti archeologici di epoca romana inducono a pensare a un insediamento preesistente
- Il Marchesato -
Documentata fin dall'anno 1000, la curtis Saluzzo è marchesato d'origine aleramica già alla fine del 1100; quattordici marchesi si succedono alla guida del piccolo stato di confine, che mantiene, anche grazie ai legami politici e culturali con la vicina Francia, la propria autonomia politica giungendo perfino a contendere ai Savoia il predominio del Piemonte e la costruzione di uno stato regionale. Il Marchesato di Saluzzo raggiunge la massima fortuna nel XV secolo, sotto i successivi governi di Ludovico I e Ludovico II, quando all'espansione economica e ad una crescente prosperità, garantite da un lungo periodo di pace interna ed esterna, corrisponde lo splendore delle arti e delle lettere. Nel 1511 ottiene dal papa Giulio II l'istituzione della Diocesi. In questi anni Saluzzo assume l'aspetto di una piccola capitale con il centro storico disteso a ventaglio sulla collina ed in origine racchiuso da una duplice cerchia di mura ¬- soluzioni urbanistiche di fine '400 conservate pressoché intatte fino ai giorni nostri.
- La Decadenza -
Peraltro, già nel secolo successivo, inizia la decadenza: travolto dalla contesa francoimperiale, il piccolo stato è infine annesso al Ducato sabaudo (Trattato di Lione, 1601), nella cui storia da allora confluirà. Nel '700 si assiste alla ripresa economica e demografica: la città si espande al piano e sotto il Regno di Sardegna è capoluogo di provincia. Durante la parentesi napoleonica (1796-1814) è annessa al regno francese nel Dipartimento della Stura; costituito il regno d'Italia, fu nominata capoluogo di circondario e sede di sottoprefettura.
Ogni anno Saluzzo rivive i fasti del suo passato attraverso la rievocazione messa in scena dal Gruppo Storico del Saluzzese

- The Foundation -
The actual date of the foundation of the town of Saluzzo is unknown. The first reference to the existence of the town dates back to the year 1028 in which a castrum was cited, which was owned by the Marquis of Turin, Olderico Manfredi, of the Arduinici family. - The Marqisate -
Documented as from the year 1000, the Saluzzo curtis Saluzzo was a marquisate of Aleramic origin as the late 1100. No less than fourteen marquises followed in succession in the government of this small border state; which, thanks to its cultural and political ties with nearby France, succeeded in maintaining its own political independent, to the extent that it event contended with the Savoia family for the domination of Piedmont and the foundation of a regional state. The Marquisate of Saluzzo reached its maximum glory in the 15th century, under the subsequent rules of Ludovico I and Ludovico II, with a period of economic prosperity, thanks to a long period of both internal and external peace, also marked by a corresponding flourishing of arts and letters. In 1511 Pope Julius II granted it the status of a Dioceses. During this period Saluzzo assumed all the features a a true small capital with its historic centre extending in a fan-shape over the hillside, and originally enclosed in a double set of walls -- a town plan adopted in the late 1400's which has remained intact up to the present day.
- The Decline -
The period of decline in fact began in the previous century: the town involved in French-Imperial disputes, the small state being finally annexed to the Savoy Dukedom (Treaty of Lyons, 1601), and from this time on it became involved in its history. In the 1700's there was an economic and demographic upturn: the town expanding on the plains and under the Reign of Sardinia it became the provincial capital. During the Napoleonic period (1796-1814) it was annexed by the French Rule becoming part of the Stura Department; on the constitution of the Kingdom of Italy, it was nominate the provincial capital and the seat of the sub-prefecture.
