Tsunami at Kuji port, Iwate Prefecture
The 311 tsunami at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
There's another version of this filmed by a helicopter overhead which can shortly be heard on this video.
Often the 311 tsunami looked like a fast rising tide rather than an actual wave, but here at Kuji you can actually sea the wave-like appearance of the tsunami.

Choshi - Chiba Tsunami Japan 2011 Complete Documentary
Hello. We have tad another episode of our Japan tsunami 2011 series. And this time we head to the deep south, where in the Chiba Prefecture, we managed to capture several impressive tsunami strikes. Of course, you will find all the information, connections and context in the video. The purpose of the video is not to shock the destruction, but to provide a comprehensive picture of the behavior of the tsunami far from the source of the earthquake, the behavior of the tsunami on the rivers and other interesting information.

Caught on Tape: Tsunami hits Japan port town
New video released shows the moment when the tsunami hit a small Japanese port town.
Tsunami surging to Maehama area of Motoyoshi town, Kesennuma city
Footage: A capture of the tsunami that attacked Motoyoshi town of Maehama area in the southern region of Kesennuma city, Miyagi prefecture. Footage was recorded by Mr. Keiji Hatakeyama, a local resident and cameraman. About 30 minutes from the time of earthquake occurrence, when Mr. Hatakeyama began to record with his camera from a hill in Amagasawa area of Motoyoshi town overlooking the coast of Maehama, around 3:15 p.m., the high waves had already reached Maehama Fishing Port. Offshore within the port which had now turned into an inlet, the two breakwalls sticking out from both east and west sides of the coast are about to be swallowed by waves.

The tsunami in Japan as it really was 日本の津波 ocean
March 11, 2011 Japan was shocked by a nine-magnitude earthquake. It caused the tsunami, which today is called the most powerful and deadly in the history of our planet. The wave height was about 40 meters. A warning came a few minutes before the tragedy, so only 42% of people managed to escape from the elements. More than 15 thousand people died. These photos tell about the terrible and destructive events that shocked Japan and the whole world.
Many witnesses were shocked by the coal-black color of the sea waves that flooded the city and carried cars into the ocean. Meanwhile, this fact is explained simply and without any mysticism: a huge wave raised so much dirt and clay from the bottom that they painted the water in anthr
In the city of Otsuchi, a mighty wave took the boat several kilometers from the sea and lowered it to the roof of the hotel. The tsunami flooded half of the city and destroyed 620 of the 650 fishing vessels in the harbor, completely destroying the Otsuchi fishing industry. In a city with a population of 16 thousand people, 799 died and 608 people were declared missing.
The city of Onagawa was almost destroyed by a 70-meter wave. 70% of buildings were destroyed, 827 residents of the city died in the waves
The tsunami flipped over and shattered thousands of fishing boats and boats. Fuel from them, of course, poured into the sea, complementing the picture of environmental disaster. This is how the water area near the village of Fudai looked like, where the tsunami swept all fishing vessels. Cleaning the sea of oil became the second main environmental task of the Japanese during the country's reconstruction - after the liquidation of the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant, also caused by the tsunami ..
This is a map of the leakage of radioactive waste from the tsunami-destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant. A powerful blow touched almost the whole world - from South America to Australia and from Antarctica to Alaska. Some experts claim that even today up to 300 tons of toxic waste per day flows from the station into the World Ocean.
Japanese fishing has become one of the industries most affected by the tsunami, as the fishing fleet - from small fishing boats to large trawlers - was virtually destroyed.

Tsunami at Kamaishi port, Iwate Prefecture
The 311 Tsunami at Kamaishi port in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
This video is somehow unique, since it shows the actual comings and goings of the tsunami and not just the arrival of the biggest wave. It starts a couple of minutes after the earthquake, probably somewhere around 2:50 and 2:55 pm and then goes on for at least one and a half hour, plus some footage of the night and the next day.
You can see how the water level falls in the minutes after the earthquake, the sign of an approaching tsunami. Then around 18:00 the tsunami begins to flood the port. The most impressive footage occurs during the two minutes after 24:00, then the tsunami overcomes the seawalls and smashes with incredible force into the city.
The building from which this video was shot can be seen on a NHK video which was shown often on TV:
It's behind the road bridge, on the right side. The building with the pyramid shaped tower. The video was probably shot out of this tower.
At the entrance of the bay, a large structure can be seen. That structure is the Kamaishi Breakwater. It was intended to save the town from tsunamis and took 30 years to build until being completed in 2009. In 2010 it got its own entry in the Guinness Book of World Records, for it was the deepest breakwater on the planet.
At 18:00 the waves begin flowing over the breakwater and for the next ten minutes it disappears in foam. When it reappears at 34:00 it is torn apart - it took Mother Nature merely ten minutes to smash something which took humans 30 years to build.
Still it probably wasn't completely useless. Kamaishi was inundated in water up to 38 feet / 11.5 metres high, but that was behind the breakwater. In front of the breakwater, the water reached up to 100 feet / 30.5 metres.
Ryoishi, a little fishing village further north Kamaishi Bay, which was not protected by the breakwater, got destroyed by waves up to 64 feet / 19.5 metres high.
So the breakwater probably absorbed some of the tsunami's energy and deflected some more to the north side of the bay, which effectively halved the tsunami's height in Kamaishi city. Unfortunately that doesn't help at all if you're confronted with a monster tsunami, which even with its height halved is still higher than your defenses.
Video recorded by Kamaishi Port Office, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Provided by EERI member Shunsuke Otani.
Tsunami at Ryoishi port, near Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture
The 311 tsunami Ryoishi, a little fishing village a few kilometres north of Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
The village wasn't protected by the Kamaishi breakwater as Kamaishi itself was, so the waves turned out much bigger - up to 19.5 metres. You don't see an actual wave devastating Ryoishi, but rather a fast rising tide.
At 4:14 you can see this tide rising at the seawall. This seawall is nine metres high, and it doesn't take the tsunami more than a minute to rise from nearly zero to those nine metres. And that's only the first wave. At 07:15 you can see the second wave approaching, while the water left over from the first one is still nine metres high. Two minutes later, the water level has doubled. And from then on it's only mayhem...
At 29:00 you can see the remains of the nine metre high seawall - the second wave of the tsunami toppled and tore it apart.
