Bakau, coastal city in The Gambia, hotels, Fajara, fisherman, market, bars, guesthouse
Bakau is a pleasant area in which to stay which is a little calmer than some of the more traditional tourist hotspots. There are still bumsters, however they are less aggressive and less frequent. There are some reasonable places to eat, a good variety of bars and plenty of places to buy crafts and produce.
Get in[edit]
It is uproad from Fajara, past the MRC. Take a yellow taxi from anywhere in the capital area and it should not cost you more than 100 dalasi, even from Banjul. Haggle hard.
You can also use the yellow taxis as shared taxi. Just tell them you don't want to have a town trip (privat taxi drive), then you will just pay 8 dalasi from Serrekunda or from traffic light. You can also use the small buses, just ask them where they're going, it will be a little bit slower than a taxi, but it will cost you 8 dalasi as well and you will travel like a local.
Get around[edit]
Yellow taxis are inexpensive if you know what you're doing, bush taxis (minibuses) are available also but you need to know how to navigate them. Bakau itself can be explored on foot and there are no areas where you cannot safely walk, although in the backstreets there is no street lighting so may not feel comfortable after dark.
See[edit][add listing]
There is a landing place and market for small boat fishermen, which is enjoyable to watch. This is more somewhere to stay and party in the evenings, the major attractions are in other areas.
Do[edit][add listing]
Mainly an entertainment area.
Buy[edit][add listing]
There is a craft market which is a good place to buy souvenirs if you want your money to go straight to the craftsman.
Eat[edit][add listing]
The best restaurant in the area, which also has outstanding views over the sea and fish market, is called something like the Fisherman's Rest (I forget the precise name) and is in the building which was once the house of the old colonial governor. It is comparatively expensive but good and not so touristy.
A cheaper but decent alternative is Saffie J's, especially for African dishes. between 175 and 250 dalasi for a main dish and 10 dalasi for a fish pie. Try the local tapalapa sandwiches for breakfast, they're selled everywhere on the street. You can find the best ones on the Kofi Annaan Road, opposite to the one world guesthouse. Try the one with potatoes. Between 15 and 20 Dalasi for a huge tapalapa baguette.
Drink[edit][add listing]
Bars here are plentiful. The locals will all try to get you to go to a place called Lama Lama, however I do not recommend it as it is very sleazy and not very good. If you want a place where you will not encounter bumsters, L.A. Live is a good option as the security keeps them out. Sinatra's often has good live music. If you want a heavy Reggae party, the Romana guesthouse has two big nights a week, dont go here until you are used to Gambia however. The last post, ie the bar open latest, is called Podium and located in the backstreets. I recommend you go here with a Gambian, it is worth buying a few drinks for him to have him lead you safely through the streets when you are drunk and to stop the other people in there hassling you for drinks. There are lots of other options, also lots of good places to watch English football. But I would avoid Lama Lama.
Sleep[edit][add listing]
The Romana guesthouse is cheap at 375 per night and is pretty good EXCEPT they have two big club nights per week where you will not sleep until 4 am (all other nights are quiet). If you are there to party, great, if you are staying there you are like the VIP. However, if you are the quiet type, do not stay here these nights.
One World Guesthouse, Kofi Annaan Road 10. 18€ for a double room with shared toilet. Very clean and a beautiful garden with a pool. Staff is nice and helpful. There are other guesthouses, all reasonable prices and quality.
Contact[edit]
A few honest people: Ali is an Egyptian who runs the Fisherman's restaurant mentioned above. Noah, the manager of the Romana will keep you safe and deal fairly with you if you stay there. Saffie, who runs Saffie J's, is an ex-soldier with a lot of influence, if you need someone to tell a bumster to go away he is your man.
Get out[edit]
The whole capital area is easily accessible, river trips can be arranged, you are not too far from the Barra ferry if you want to go up to Senegal.

Bakau
During Peace Corps The Gambia's 2015 multimedia training, PCV Kelsey McCall and her group focused on the entrepreneurs of Bakau, an ocean-side neighborhood in The Gambia's coastal capital region. While her partners interviewed and took portraits of the many characters living and working in Bakau, Kelsey focused on capturing the atmosphere of this sea-side market through video.

Streetmarket & Garage at TurnTable in Gambia ????
This video shows you the taxi site and the street market around TurnTable in The Gambia. This roundabout next to the Petroleum House, which is the highest building in the Gambia, is known by this name by almost everyone who lives in the Gambia. Say the crossing of Senegambia Hwy and the Coastal Road. I'm starting at the fallow lying ground, between Brusubi phase 1 and 2,where busses to Serekunda, Brikama, Banjul and Sanyang park between random local taxies. Business for local taxies in Gambia is hard and difficult that's one of the reasons that so many are waiting for customers. Same for the little local shops. It's hard making a living in a country so poor that it is still a third world country. Al they want is a phone, and European people are often seen as walking ATM's. But I love this country and I hope this video gives you a nice impression of the real local life. Questions about Gambia? Leave a comment below and I'll be happy to answer them.
