Artist 2 Artist Patrick Mukabi
Kuona Trust organized Artist 2 Artist talk, a forum that has artists share their journey to where they are today, influences, challenges faced along the way and their creative process. The first artist featured is Patrick Mukabi who hosted others at his Dusty Depot one morning. The session began with an ice-breaker activity that was a study in how one observes, and how one interacts with somebody else's creation. That was followed (at minute 6.55) by an introduction to the series by Sylvia Gichia, director of Kuona Trust. The talk then commenced (at minute 12) with the following highlights:

Kuona Trust : Jua Kali
Artists : Tahir Karmali in collaboration with Tonney Mugo and Dennis Muraguri
This exhibition is inspired by the informal sector; that breaths character into Nairobi’s economy. Built from the opportunistic personality and perseverance of the Jua Kali worker. These workers often use recycled or found objects to develop their creations. The artist used this element of Nairobi to describe one’s perceived self-image created from the idea of a Jua Kali philosophy.
Young self-taught Kenyan artist making a living from real life-like art
Have you ever come across a piece of artwork that appears extremely real life-like, almost to the extent that it seems to trick the eye? Well, that's what is defined as hyper-realism painting. And that's what self-taught Kenyan artist Clavers Odhiambo practices. Odhiambo recently held his very first exhibition at the Alliance Francaise in Nairobi.

About Evans Mbugua:
Evans Mbugua (n. 1979 Nairobi)
It starts with registration in a French learning program at the University of Toulouse. During his years of learning the language, he does not drop his pencils, he worked incessantly, his goal is the Fine Arts. This is the Fine Arts in Pau that integrates and it is in the Design section that performs its infancy. Patrice Chaminade, one of his teachers, pushes him to work on the memory of its origins and the crossing with contemporary art. He starts to think about using pictograms that bloom from everywhere in Western cities. He recalled that in Africa and his country Kenya is a language with scarification, tattoos, fabrics etc. He then started manufacturing a new language created from the icons that surround it. It is not in the soft colors of watercolor he found his inspiration. He will return on the paths of his childhood when to get out of school, he watched the flights of parrots, where nature was screaming his joy and splashed her light eyes.
Then he plays with the colors of his childhood and combines the symbols he chose for his creations. He places, moves the sheet to lose them and give them a new meaning: an African reading. He discovers that his new images can become the background of his paintings Concert painted it using Plexiglas. These images painted by a dithering superimposed pictograms overlap by transparency for doing a work which in a perfect symbiosis, the traditional art meets contemporary art.

About me Adelaide Damoah:
My name is Adelaide Damoah and I am an artist. My studio is located at Thames Side Studios in London. I have historically made figurative oil paintings and am currently exploring using my own body as a tool to print oil paint on to the painting surface. I write through and around the images created in this way to tell stories and to express what streams through my consciousness at that moment in time. I have always been inspired by Frida Kahlo, but more recently, Basquiat and Ana Mendieta are my biggest influences.
The Art Success series of interviews started off in 2011 with written interviews for my blog. I started this project because coming from a science/business background, I had to rethink what success looked like to me and wanted to figure out what it took to become that in this unique business. In talking to other artists in this way on camera, I hope to pass on useful information to other artists and art lovers. Fellow artists can watch and learn from their contemporaries and art lovers can discover new artists and art. Of course, there is the added benefit of promoting my colleagues to new audiences.
Please subscribe to stay up to date with interviews and my art Vlogs.
