Ho Chi Minh Museum and One Pillar Pagoda 9/27/2016
Hanoi, Vietnam
September 27, 2016
The Ho Chi Minh Museum was constructed in May 1990 on the occasion of President Ho Chi Minh’s 100th birth anniversary. It was built for the Vietnamese people to commemorate their struggle and victories during his era and to show their deep gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh.
The museum has several sections and a thematic exhibition space to showcase Ho Chi Minh’s life and revolutionary career, artifacts, artworks, documentary films and over 25,000 publications about President Ho and the Vietnamese revolution.
The thousand-year-old One Pillar Pagoda beside the Ho Chi Minh Museum is a Buddhist temple built from wood on a single stone pillar during the time of Emperor Ly Thai Tong. The design resembling a lotus blossom is a symbol for purity and the shrine inside the pagoda is dedicated to Vietnamese Buddhist deity Quan Am.
One Pillar Pagoda is one of Vietnam’s most iconic and most revered temples. It has been destroyed during the evacuation of the French Union forces in 1954 and was rebuilt afterwards.

The One pillar pagoda in Hanoi Vietnam
The One-pillar pagoda or Dien Huu pagoda, has one of the most special architectures in Vietnam. The pagoda is situated next to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, right in the center of Hanoi.
The pagoda started being constructed under Ly's dynasty in 1049. The legend goes that one night in 1049, King Ly Thai Tong dreamed of the Holy Lady (Phat ba Quan Am) sitting on a lotus and leading him to a similar building.
When he woke up, he was advised by Thien Tue monk to build the pillar-based pagoda like in his dream and topping it with the lotus of the Holy lady. Every year when it came to April 8th in Lunar calendar, the King came to the pagoda for Buddha bathing ceremony and afterwards, released a bird.
In 1105, King Ly Nhan Tong extended the pagoda and added Linh Chieu bond. However, time has erased everything but the limited area like what we see now. Near the pagoda there's a bodhi tree. This is the gift from Rajendra Prasad- Indian presidents to Ho Chi Minh President.
The pagoda now became one of the most meaningful symbols of Hanoi.

Things To Do In Hanoi, One Pillar Pagoda, PUPPIES and POKEMON in Hanoi
Todays travels around Hanoi, Vietnam we saw a lot. The day started out at the temple of literature devoted to Confucianism outside of the Old Quarter. That was followed to the Ho Chi Minh Museum which was unfortunately closed. If you plan on going to the Ho Chi Minh Museum I would suggest checking the hours ahead of time as it's closed for a period of time during the middle of the day. Right next to the Ho Chi Minh Museum there is the One Pillar Pagoda. The One Pillar Pagoda is a Buddhist monument that individuals from all over the world go to.
Upon leaving I headed directly to Huu Tiep Lake. Huu Tiep Lake is close to the Ba Dinh district and home to the remains of a downed B52 bomber. This somber reminder of the Vietnam Conflict is definitely something I suggest seeing if you are in Hanoi. The stark contrast between the crumbling remains of the B52 and the well kept houses surrounding it serve as a reminder that this country has had quite the checkered past.
After the reality of seeing Huu Tiep it was time for something a little more uplifting. I stumbled upon Pet House and got to play with some adorable dogs of all sizes and shapes. It was absolutely fantastic getting to play with all these adorable balls of fur.
From there I played Pokémon Go while wandering back to my hotel in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. One of my favorite things about playing Pokémon Go while traveling is that it gives me the opportunity to explore destinations or checkpoints I would normally not see.

Next tot th Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum you'll find the One Pillar Pagoda. An oasis of rest and peace when not visited by bunches of schoolkids after being to the Mausoleum. The Piller is believed to be erected in 1049 by King Ly Thai Tong
Chùa Một Cột & One Pillar Pagoda - Hanoi, Vietnam
The One Pillar Pagoda was built in 1049 under King Ly Thai Tong. Legend has it that the King was indeed old and hadn’t any son. One night he dreamed Guan Yin Buddha giving him a baby and soon after the Queen gave birth to a baby. The King ordered hence the construction of the Pagoda to honour Buddha.
This is an innovative structure combining architectural space with stone sculptures and paintings. The water is a symbol of cultural, artistic ethnicity. The original temple was indeed destroyed and rebuilt smaller than the original one.
Chùa Một Cột, located next to the One Pillar Pagoda, is a very nice temple beautifully decorated and deserves a visit of its own.

The One Pillar Pagoda
(Vietnamese: Chùa Một Cột ????????榾, formally Diên Hựu tự [延祐寺] or Liên Hoa Đài [蓮花臺]) is a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is regarded alongside the Perfume Temple, as one of Vietnam's two most iconic temples.
The temple is built of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter and 4 m in height, and it is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a Buddhist symbol of purity, since a lotus blossoms in a muddy pond. In 1954, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam after the First Indochina War. It was rebuilt afterwards.
A replica was built in Thủ Đức in Saigon in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
