CHIANG MAI SCOOTER DAY TRIP - SAMOENG LOOP | Thailand Travel Vlog 051, 2017
This was such an epic day, it's now firmly on our list of favourite things to do in Chiang Mai. We hired scooters and drove the Samoeng Loop through the Mae Savalley, also known as the Mae Sa Loop - its always a popular choice on blogs for what to do in Chiang Mai and the various places on the trip. Basically its a scooter mission, or motorbike rental mission, around the Mae Sa Valley mountains and Samoeng area surrounding Chiang Mai - and you definitely should do it!

Riding Scooters in Chiang Mai, Thailand | On Two Wheels Behind the Scenes
No, this is NOT our latest On Two Wheels! If you’re keeping track, we at Motorcyclist like to bring you a new episode of OTW ‘round about the first Thursday of every month. Well, as much as we hate to admit it, this month we’re a little behind (there may or may not have been an accident involved).
But, because our tireless Video Producer, Spenser Robert basically never sleeps he was able to cut together this small slice of behind the scenes footage from a recent trip to Thailand, where he and Senior Editor Zack Courts traveled on assignment. It’s just a small segment of two-wheeled life in Thailand, seen from the perspective of two wide-eyed tourists on their way to competing in an international riding contest.
What were Spenser and Zack up to, exactly, stuck in Chiang Mai for most of a day? Where were they headed? Why Thailand? The freshest episode of On Two Wheels will surely reveal all. ‘Til then, we hope you enjoy this peek behind the production curtain, and it will hold you over until the whole story is presented next week.

Chiang Mai Road Trip - Samoeng Loop
Looking for the best Chiang Mai Road Trip? Take a motorbike around the Samoeng Loop, 2 hours surrounding Doi Suthep National Park. On your way, you can catch the Mae Sa Waterfall, enjoy scenic overlooks, and maybe stop at this secret coffee shop we found with the best views in Chiang Mai Thailand!
If you’re looking for fun things to do in Chiang Mai, a road trip (or motorbike trip) should be high on your list. Unlike the Mae Hong Son loop which takes multiple days and is difficult for a short holiday in Chiang Mai, the Samoeng loop only takes 2 hours and has amazing stops along the way!
If you start on the Samoeng loop heading North, you can reach the Mae Sa Waterfall in just 30 minutes by motorbike. Although this isn’t on the top list of the most impressive waterfalls in Chiang Mai, Mae Sa waterfall has 10 different mini waterfalls that you can hike to and look at. Fall #5 you can even swim in and have a picnic by, which is a popular local activity for Thai’s and tourists alike.
To get the best views in Chiang Mai, keep going on the Samoeng loop until you reach the middle which is an area called Samoeng Tai. Basically, you can pull over anywhere along this route and see amazing views of all of the hills and valleys surrounding Chiang Mai Thailand.
We were lucky enough to find a secret spot, with nobody else around, that had the best views in Chiang Mai! The place is a coffee shop and hotel called: น้องน้ำ รีสอร์ท. Now since we don’t speak Thai, I don’t know what that means so here is the address: น้องน้ำ รีสอร์ท Tambon Samoeng Tai, Amphoe Samoeng, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50250
If you are looking to do an easy Thailand road trip then we highly recommend the Samoeng Loop! It’s a great Mae Hong Son Loop alternative and an easy day trip in Chiang Mai for those of you who only have a few days to see the sights. We suggest taking the Samoeng Loop to explore the Chiang Mai countryside and all the beautiful Thai nature. Although you can rent a car, your best bet is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai for the day to take you on this route. Ours was only $9 USD for an entire 24 hours.
If you have questions about this Chiang Mai road trip, want more travel tips in Chiang Mai, or are curious about Chiang Mai travel in general, feel free to watch our other Thailand travel vlogs! We provide useful travel guides for the places we visit and have spent 4 months in Thailand sharing the best places to visit, both on and off the tourist trail. (ORIGINAL) How to ride a motorcycle in Thailand traffic - Chiangmai (DISTORTED - NARROW AND TALL)
A more natural re-do is at: (stretched and cropped)
On a Honda Wave 125 enjoy the thrill ride from Rincome intersection (Superhighway and Nimenheimen rds) to The Dukes restaurant. People in the know will see I went the wrong way after the bridge, but then turned around to get to The Dukes.
The GoPro camera mounted on top of my helmet makes the video seem a little faster than it really is! And the wide angle lens also makes spaces seem smaller. But overall, I do ride pretty quickly and I do squeeze through some pretty tight places..!
A more natural version (stretched and cropped to compensate for the high-mounted wide-angle lens) is located here:
Maybe it seems more sane... (?!)

SCOOTER ROAD TRIP ON THE SAMOENG LOOP IN CHIANG MAI | TRAVEL VLOG #28
A scooter day trip on the Samoeng Loop is an absolute must if you're in Chiang Mai. Thailand is insanely beautiful, and the area around Chiang Mai is no exception. The Samoeng Loop is about 100 kilometres long and goes from Chiang Mai and into the mountains northwest of the city and back to Chiang Mai. Driving the Samoeng loop takes approximately 3 hours, but there's so much to see, so plan on spending at least 5 or 6 hours on the road.
We brought food from Chiang Mai, because we were not sure we'd be able to find anything vegetarian on the road, but we actually did pass by a couple of vegetarian restaurants. There are a lot of restaurants and small cafés around the Samoeng Loop, so you really don't need to bring anything but water (which you can also buy, but you know).
When we went to Chiang Mai last year, we went up to Doi Suthep a number of times, and we had no idea that the Samoeng Loop even existed. You should definitely also see Doi Suthep while you're here, but trust me – you don't want to miss the Samoeng Loop! We rented a scooter for the day from a place called Mango Bikes in the Nimman Area of Chiang Mai. We paid 200 baht for one day, and about 80 baht for fuel. It is that affordable. If you fill up your bike in Chiang Mai, you should be good to go. We stopped at a tiny gas station after about 30 kilometres, but it turned out we didn't have to do that. Better safe than sorry, I guess :)
We chose to go counter-clockwise as most of the interesting sights are on the Northern part of the Samoeng Loop, and we spent the majority of our time on the first 30 or 40 kilometres. Go whichever way you want, but make sure you have enough time to stop and enjoy the amazing views. We left Chiang Mai at around 11 am and got back at around 4.30 pm.
What you need for a scooter day trip round the Samoeng Loop:
– Water
– A bike (and helmets, of course)
– A few hundred baht
– Sunscreen!
– Sunglasses
Have an amazing trip!

Hi there! I'm Anne-Li – Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go – for us.
We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly – it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures – all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!
