Matheran at 800 m (2,625 ft)is a popular hill station, accessible by road and train. It's around 100 km from Mumbai. Matheran is a protected forest area. Main mode of transport is hand-pulled rickshaws and horses. British-style architecture has been preserved in Matheran and most structures are now heritage structures. Matheran has been declared an eco-sensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry (GoI) and is home to diverse flora and fauna. There are also several rare species like the Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, White-Rumped Shama, Brown Wood Owl, South Indian Tree Shrew, and The Giant Squirrel. It is also home to a wide range of snakes, from the harmless ones to deadly and venomous snakes.

The trail to One tree hill from Ambewadi is also called the Shivaji ladder route. Midway through the trail near the end of the thick forest, you come across a mass of boulders and rocks into which the trail disappears. This is known as Shivaji Steps or the Shivaji Ladder. According to local legend, Shivaji rode up this route on horseback. From here, it’s 500m to the top, up a stream bed that’s dry except during the monsoon.

About One Tree Hill-
This point is named as One Tree Hill Point because a tree stands right on the top of the peak, and there is no other vegetation around except some grass. This beauty is at its best in the monsoon season. This is the southern most tip of Matheran

Ways to reach base village of Ambewadi
By road- Can hire a private vehicle directly to the base village of Ambewadi. The base village of Ambewadi is around 65 kms from Mumbai.
By train- The nearest station to the base village is Karjat. Karjat is around 13 kms from the base village. U can hire an auto/dumdum to reach the base village. The auto drivers take around Rs. 100/- per head. Also there are buses which ply from Karjat to the base village (Pls check the frequency of busses if planning to go by bus)

These two are not very well known points, especially the 3-in-1 point which I found because I took a wrong turn (haha) but it was totally worth it.

Matheran is a hill station in Maharashtra, very close to Mumbai and Lonavala.
I was there couple of weeks ago and saw many scenic locations!

One tree hill, this mountain will always have crazy memories since, i made a lot of new friends as well, defeated my height fear, to know more watch the video till the end.
One Tree Hill Point is almost 4 km away from the marketplace, taking around an hour to walk up to this place. It's better to take a horse or a hand-pulled rickshaw. This point is named as One Tree Hill Point because a tree stands right on the top of the peak, and there is no other vegetation around except some grass. This beauty is at its best in the monsoon season. Some other tourist group told us that this is the southernmost tip of Matheran. The view from this peak is really spectacular as you can see Karjat, Mumbai-Pune highway, Panvel city, Chowk village and a few other vantage points of Matheran. To get the best view of this peak, walk all the way to the edge and then only you'll be able to notice that why this point is called One Tree Hill. There is a trekking path from Ambewadi to One Tree Hill Point, which is pretty easy and can be done by beginners also. It takes almost 3.5 hours to climb up and 2.5 hours to descend. I'll advise to avoid this trek during monsoons or hire a guide.

It is Asia's only automobile-free hill station.
There are around 38 designated look-out points in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. From this point, the view of sunset and sunrise is dramatic. The Louisa Point offers crystal clear view of the Prabal Fort. The other points are the One Tree Hill Point, Heart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Rambagh Point, and more. To stay there, there are plenty of hotels.There are a lot of Parsi bungalows. Beautiful old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. The roads are not metalled and are made of red laterite earth. There are many points (viewpoints) in Matheran which give a panoramic view of the plains below.

Matheran is well connected to Mumbai (100 km) & Pune (120 km) by rail and road, while Neral is the nearest rail station.

It is an easy 1.5-2 hrs trek. with sweeping vistas throughout.

It was cool and overcast through the day with a very light intermittent drizzle - almost perfect weather conditions for trekking. We had a very pleasant outing, - benefiting from the the extended monsoon season.

Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a popular resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is birthplace of famous freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a barber family. State Govt. has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India's other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.

Matheran has been declared an ecosensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry and can be called a Health Sanatorium in itself. A good collection of the dried plants is deposited in Blatter Herbarium, St. Xavier's College, Bombay, Mumbai. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed. Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. The nearby Lake Charlotte is the main source of Matheran's drinking water. Matheran is a hill station situated in the Raigad district of Maharastra. The hill station is part of the Western Ghats range and is at an elevation of 800 M (2,625 feet) above sea level. Matheran is 120KM away from Pune and 90 KM away from Mumbai. The word Matheran means 'forest on the forehead' and the hill is only one automobile-free hill station in Asia.

There are more than 30 viewpoints in the Matheran hill station. Panorama Point, Alaxendar point, Chowk Point, Echo Point, One Tree Hill Point and Sunset Point are few of them. These viewpoints offer an astonishing view of the neighbouring hills including Prabhalgad Fort, Kalavantin Durg, Chanderi Fort, Peb Fort (aka. Vikatgad Fort), and Haji Alang Malang.

In this video, I am going to trekking around the Matheran with an aim to cover as many views points as possible. I started from Neral Railway Station, second last stop on the Mumbai-Karjat local train route, in a shared taxi to Matheran. In the first day, I pitched my tent on the one of the view point and in the next day I completed #Panorama_Point, #Heart_Point, #Monkey_Point, #Matheran_Town/Market/Railway Station, #Madvi_Point, #Khandala_Point, #Alexander_Point, #Chowk_Point, #One_Tree_Hill_Point, #Louisa_Point, #Echo_Point and #Sunset_Point. Then I returned #Aman_Lodge and then to #Neral. I walked around 30 KM to cover all these viewpoints.

മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ റായ്ഗഡ് ജില്ലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ഹിൽ സ്റ്റേഷനാണ് മാത്തേരൻ. പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ ഹിൽ സ്റ്റേഷൻ സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് 800 മീറ്റർ (2,625 അടി) ഉയരത്തിലാണ്. പൂനെയിൽ നിന്ന് 120 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയും മുംബൈയിൽ നിന്ന് 90 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുമാണ് മാത്തരൻ. ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഏക വാഹന രഹിത ഹിൽ സ്റ്റേഷനാണ് മാത്തേരന്‍.

മാത്തേരന്‍ ഹിൽ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ 30 ലധികം വ്യൂ പോയിന്റുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. പനോരമ പോയിന്റ്, അലക്സെൻഡർ പോയിന്റ്, ചൗക്ക് പോയിന്റ്, എക്കോ പോയിന്റ്, വൺ ട്രീ ഹിൽ പോയിന്റ്, സൺസെറ്റ് പോയിന്റ് എന്നിവ അവയിൽ ചിലതാണ്. പ്രബൽഗഡ് കോട്ട, കലവന്തിൻ ദുർഗ്, ചന്ദേരി കോട്ട, പെബ് കോട്ട (വികാത്ഗഡ് കോട്ട), ഹാജി ആലംഗ് മലംഗ് എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള തൊട്ടടുത്ത മലകളുടെ വിസ്‌മയകരമായ കാഴ്ച ഈ കാഴ്ച്ച ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് കാണാവുന്നതാണ്.

മാത്തേരനിലെ എല്ലാ വ്യൂ പോയന്റസും കാണുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെയാണ് ഈ ട്രെക്കിങ്ങ്. മുംബൈ-കർജാത്ത് ലോക്കൽ ട്രെയിൻ റൂട്ടിലെ നേരല്‍ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍ ട്രെയിന്‍ ഇറങ്ങിയ ശേഷം ഷയര്‍ ടാക്സിയില്‍ ഞാന്‍ മാത്തേരനിലെത്തി. ആദ്യ ദിവസം ഒരു വ്യൂ പോയിന്റില്‍ ടെന്‍റടിച്ചു. രണ്ടാമത്തെ ദിവസം, പനോരമ പോയിന്റ്, ഹാർട്ട് പോയിന്റ്, മങ്കി പോയിന്റ്, മാത്തരൻ ടൗൺ / മാർക്കറ്റ് / റെയിൽ‌വേ സ്റ്റേഷൻ, മാഡ്‌വി പോയിൻറ്, ഖണ്ടാല പോയിൻറ്, അലക്സാണ്ടർ പോയിൻറ്, ചൗക്ക് പോയിന്റ്, വൺ ട്രീ ഹിൽ പോയിന്റ്, ലൂയിസ പോയിന്റ്, എക്കോ പോയിന്റ്, സൺസെറ്റ് പോയിന്റ് എല്ലാം കണ്ടു. ആകെ 30KM നടക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു ഈ കാഴ്ച്ചകളെല്ലാം കാണാന്‍ വേണ്ടി.
