Edo era townscape recreated at Hanyu Onihei Edo Dokoro PA on Tohoku expressway (Saitama Pref.)
The concept behind this parking area was to recreate the world of Onihei Hankacho a series of Japanese historical novels, set in the Edo period, written by Shotaro Ikenami.
The Service area is full of shops and restaurants and here it seems to travel back in time.
From Ikenami's Onihei Hankacho various adaptations developed into a movie, a theatrical piece, Tv drama, manga and anime. The anime was first aired in 2017.For those of you interested in anime here is a link:
This service area is called Hanyu Onihei Edo Dokoro, it is located in the city of Hanyu (Saitama prefecture) on the Tohoku expressway.

One of the most unique parking areas along Japanese expressways is Onihei Edo Dokoro. It's located in Hanyu, a city in the northern part of Saitama Prefecture, which you pass as you head north from Tokyo on the Tohoku Expressway. It's modelled after a street from the Edo period.
