Onkaparinga River National Park

In Onkaparinga River National Park, diverse hiking trails take you to cliff tops with magnificent views, or down to permanent rock pools teeming with life. You’ll see rugged ridge tops and the narrow river valley of the spectacular Onkaparinga Gorge. This park protects some of the finest remaining pockets of remnant vegetation in the Southern Adelaide region. Wherever you go, you’ll be among native wildlife such as birds, koalas, kangaroos and possums - you may even spot an echidna. Areas of the park were used as farmland for many years, so you can also discover heritage-listed huts and the ruins of houses built in the 1880s.
Shared-use trails also offer opportunities for mountain bike riders and horse riders to enjoy the rugged beauty of the park

Old Port Noarlunga
An old port township at the mouth of Onkaparinga River, Port Noarlunga is now a popular family holiday destination a convenient 33 kilometres south of Adelaide. These days it's fishermen of all ages rather than coastal schooners that take advantage of its jetty – it's now a popular fishing spot along with the southern beach at the mouth of the Onkaparinga River.
Low tides expose a nearby conservation-listed reef that provides a unique natural marine reserve that's perfect for safe aquatic exploration, while more intrepid walkers will head for the river estuary and Onkaparinga River National Park.
ONKAPARINGA RIVER NATIONAL PARK - The Echidna Hike. 22/06/2019
ONKAPARINGA GORGE - would be a good place to go, if you are looking for something to do while in this region.
We got there late yesterday and did one of the smaller walks known as the Echidna Hike. This took us to a waterfall on one of the feeder creeks into the Onkaparinga River and some ruins.
Using the Avenza map app, was a great help making sure we stayed the right track.

Atmosphaeres - Vlog 5 - Adelaide Onkaparinga River National Park
Last weekend we went to the Onkaparinga River National Park in search of relaxing and peaceful locations to include in the full-quality Atmosphaeres. The surroundings were magnificent and the temperature was a nice and warm 30-32° C. Because it hasn’t been raining much in the area for the past few months the water level of the Onakparinga River was quite low and due to this there wasn’t much flow in the water. This in turn resulted in plenty of algae in the stagnant water but even though we didn’t find a spot that was worthy recording in high quality, we still wanted to give you an impression of the area. And - we got surprised by a Kangarooh that was grazing in the shade under some bushes as we continued our walk. We hope you enjoy this little escape to South Australia's Onkaparinga River National Park.

Environmental Science students at the Onkaparinga River - University of South Australia
On their second day of activities, UniSA Environmental Science students go on a field trip to the Onkaparinga River and Estuary. This field-trip is designed to engage students through experiential learning, as part of an inquiry-based project which runs through the week. Activities include gathering environmental data and using scientific equipment, as well as team-building social activities such as canoeing, hiking and beach cricket. Students work collaboratively to draw on everyone's talents and experiences to best advantage. This day is part of the Environmental Science Orientation Activities which were designed by NBE staff in collaboration with staff in the Centre for Active Learning (University of Gloucestershire). It highlights UniSA's commitment to experiential learning, and many of UniSA's Graduate Qualities.
