GERO ONSEN: Japanese Ryokan, Kaiseki Cuisine, and Onsen Baths
Gero Onsen (下呂温泉) is a quiet hot springs town located in the Japanese Alps. During the Edo period, the poet Hayashi Razan called Gero one of Japan’s three best onsen. More than a million visitors come to Gero every year, and it is still rated as one of the best hot spring resorts in Japan. Gero is located between Nagoya and Takayama. It’s only about an hour south of Takayama and is worth stopping for a night or two if you attend the Takayama Festival.
We stayed at a large ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) called Yunoshimakan.
The food and service were outstanding. The facilities are a bit dated and could use some work. All in all, however, we really enjoyed our stay.
The public onsen baths are massive there, and I had the outdoor bath all to myself early in the morning. It was amazing. The Old Man was kicked out of the public bath because of his sweet 90s tattoo, but we had a private bath with our room. There are also larger private baths for families (or those with tattoos) within the resort.

Things to do Gero Onsen 下呂温泉 Japan 2017.
In the Edo period, Gero Onsen (下呂温泉) was referred to as one of Japan's three best onsen by the Confucian poet Hayashi Razan. While the town may now be quite a bit more urbanized than back then, the waters have retained that special quality which has made them so famous.
Interestingly, the name Gero (lit. lower bath) is pronounced the same as the slang term for vomit. This has not hurt its popularity among Japanese tourists, however, with more than one million visitors every year, who continue to rate it as one of the best hot spring resorts in Japan.
Gero is located between Nagoya and Takayama, about an hour south of Takayama. This makes it a convenient stopover, or an attractive alternative to stay during the Takayama Festival, when lodging is difficult to find in Takayama. A good way to sample some of these is to purchase a Yumeguri Tegata (spa pass), a wooden tablet that can be bought all around Gero including the tourist office, ryokan, souvenir shops and convenience stores.
The Yumeguri Tegata gets you three visits to the baths of any of about thirty participating ryokan. It costs 1300 yen and is good for six months. It also makes a great souvenir.
Also dotted around the city are free footbaths where one can sit and relax after a hard day of walking.
Onsen (hot springs) are what make Gero famous, and there are three public bath houses available in town. Also at the south end of the Gero Bridge is a large rotenburo (open-air bath) you can bath in for free; however, it has no facilities and is exposed to the bridge above.

Gero Hot Springs / 下呂温泉(Gero-onsen) 20
Gero Hot Springs sits alongside the Hida River and was called one of the top three hot springs by philosopher Razan Hayashi, who served four shoguns, including Ieyasu Tokugawa and a Zen master at Kyoto Gozan during the Muromachi era, Banri Shuku. Gero's hot spring mountain village makes an attractive tourist destination.

Gero Onsen Vacation
For my Spring Break at Nanzan University a friend and I went to a famous onsen town about 2 hours north of Nagoya. The town is known for it's onsen water and we sure took advantage of that. We took 4 baths in one day and 3 foot baths. It was so much fun!
Also, check out my blog to hear more about my trip to Gero and Japanese bath culture:
