At the western end of town along a mountain slope stands Onsenji Temple, literally meaning hot spring temple. This temple is dedicated to a Buddhist saint who, according to legend, prayed for 1000 days for spring water to Kinosaki.
In the old days, visitors had to first visit the temple before being admitted to any of the baths in town. While most people no longer visit Onsenji before bathing, the temple remains to be a nice place to pay a visit to.
Onsenji's main treasure is a two meter tall, eleven headed Kannon Buddha which is on display to the public in its entirety only once every 33 years over a period of three years (next opportunity: April 23, 2018 to April 24, 2021). A partial glimpse of the statue can be caught annually on April 23rd and 24th during the Onsen Matsuri.

At the far end of Kinosaki Onsen village, opposite Kouno-Yu onsen, is the Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway.
Connecting the town with the top of Mt. Daishi this is a must-do when visiting Kinosaki.
The ropeway travels up the mountainside, passing by Onsenji Temple and offers excellent views back down towards the town.
The views from the top has been awarded a Michelin star in the Michelin Green Guide to Japan.
Many visitors to the town aren't aware of or do not make time for the ropeway, but they are missing out on some impressive views from the top.

Kinosaki is situated in northern Hyogo Prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan. This pleasant town, built along a willow lined river, is one of the most popular onsen destinations of the Kansai Region.
Hot springs were discovered in Kinosaki around the 8th century and since then the town has evolved into a charmingly old-fashioned onsen town. In the evenings guests of the local ryokan stroll around the town in yukata and geta, or wooden clogs, visiting a number of public baths and nostalgic game arcades.

Milk vending machine at Kinosaki Onsen village
After a long and hot bath in the natural hot spring onsen you might want to drink some cold milk... the fact that its sold in a glass bottle is no problem though, not with this vending machine!!
