Kenya July 2014
Immerse | Explore | Discover
Wilderness Awareness School is excited to announce a new partnership with Seattle-based experiential education organization Way Leads to Way as we offer our first international expedition to Kenya this summer, July 2014! The expedition will be an immersion into the landscape and culture of southern Kenya, focusing on unique relationships with a community of Maasai in Suswa, a small village in the Great Rift Valley. While many travel education experiences involve a feeling of simply passing through a place as an observer, this opportunity is unique in the sense that it is not just passive observation, but rather an invitation to active participation and creation of genuine connections to people and place. The curriculum will be a blend of the best that both of Way Leads to Way and Wilderness Awareness School have to offer: we will focus on the natural history, wildlife, and tracking opportunities of Kenya, while diving into an immersive experience with the Maasai. Both organizations place a high premium on not simply consuming an experience, but making sure we have an opportunity to give as well. While students will walk away from this trip with new knowledge, connection, and insight, we also value reciprocity - an authentic exchange in which our footprints stay to enrich the people and places we visit.
We hope you will consider coming with us.

A Plastic Revolution – The Flipflopi | Elahe Anjarwalla | TEDxYouth@InternationalSchoolofKenya
Recognizing the detrimental impact of plastic on our beautiful planet is not a new idea. But building a 60 foot dhow out of recycled plastic is! If you’ve been blessed to visit the East African coast, you will have seen flocks of elegant wooden dhows with simple white sails floating across the clear turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean in much the same way they have done for centuries. The Flipflopi however, (theflipflopi.com) is unlike any other dhow. Made purely out of recycled plastic by a master dhow builder and covered entirely in recycled flip flops, our vision is to sail the Flipflopi from Lamu to Cape Town to change how we think about, use, abuse, and reuse plastic. We all know that plastic waste and disposal is a major global problem – from islands of plastic waste floating on the ocean, to marine animals cruelly entangled in plastic rubbish, plastic is a problem. Elahe attended ISK before leaving for boarding school in England and graduating from Stanford. Today as an IT worker, she is passionate about the environment and enjoys being part of ambitious projects such as building 60 foot dhows made out of recycled plastic . This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

East Africa Since Independence
Scientist and historian Donald Young, has lived and worked in East Africa for four decades both as an archaeologist and and as a wildlife sarari guide. In this lecture, he traces the origins and rebirth of his Kenyan safari company Newland Tarlton & Co, its establishment soon after the Boer War, and its strong links to South Australia.
Newland Tarlton became the pioneer African safari operator hosting the rich and famous including the 1909 Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition. In recent years Don has worked hard to recreate the style of yesteryear in his modern day safaris.
Don's expertise and experience allows him to provide a valuable insight into the challenges facing African wildlife preservation. He highlights the issues, the pressures of population, the competition for resources, and the old traditions meeting the new reality.

Mukutani village in Baringo county was at centre of a bloody massacre early this year, and has since been abandoned. The only health facility there was vandalised, but with the upsurge of malaria in the region, medical personnel from KDF and the Red Cross are using the facility to help thousands of affected people.
Leila Mohammed is in Baringo and accompanied the E company kenya rifles on a mission to fight the killer disease.
