Ob Luang National Park
The Mae Chaem River was originally called the Salak hin. The river created a big but narrow canyon , which is called Ob Luang. The rocks and cliffs are subject to erosion by the strong currents of the river and have formed the canyon and strangely shaped rockformations. The water have to force it's way past rocks and boulders obstructing the course which is magnificent sight.
From 1966 to 1991 the park was administered as a forest park. After more surveys by the Royal Forest Department it was gazetted, in 1991, as the 68th national park of Thailand. The area supports a wide variety of natural attritions like waterfalls, cave, hot springs and historical sites, which serve people education and recreation. At present the total park is 630 km2 and is entirely located in Amphur Chomthong, Hod and Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai province, Thailand.

Ob Luang National Park
The Ob Luang National Park takes its name from the two meter wide Ob Luang cliff situated at the narrowest part of the Mae Cheam river. Prehistoric rock paintings have turned this into a prime sight seeing spot.
Ob Luang National Park
Ob Luang National Park is an amazing natural attraction comprising both splendid natural charms as well as mysterious scenery. A zigzagging river flows in front of a picturesque gorge. The area is a high, steep cliff with a narrow passage, creating strong currents and powerful echoes. An area in the north of this stream is teeming with various kinds of plants that provide a pleasant ambience all year round. Magnificent views of Ob Luang National Park can be seen from the bridge that links with the gorge. An interesting prehistoric archaeological site is also located in the park.
Getting there: The Ob Luang National Park is located 105 kilometres from Chiang Mai town along Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai-Hot-Mae Sariang) at Km.17 on your right. The road stretches alongside the Mae Chaem River and zigzags along mountain ranges. Bus from Chiang Mai town starts from Chiang Mai Gate, catch Chiang Mai-Hot --Omkoi route. Or from Amphoe Hot, there are 3 lines of buses: Hot-Mae Sariang, Hot-Mae Chaem, Hot-Omkoi from the Hot roundabout. All of them stop at Ob Luang National Park.

Every year when winter rolls around I remember the time I lived in Northern Thailand. I always enjoyed the cool air that winters brought in the northern region of Thailand. It's a great time to get out and enjoy the national parks and mountains. If you're in to camping this is a great time of year to do it. We can sleep in the RIPper Mobile but we also enjoy being able to spread out and relax in a tent.
So we’re off on a winter adventure seeking out cooler weather before the hot dry burning season kicks in about mid-February. Our tentative itinerary includes Loei, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai and a few stops in between at Phu Thap Berk, Phu Ruea National Park and some other cool places.
Come along with us and see what northern Thailand is like in the winter time and check out some of the national parks will be stopping at as well.
So grab a coat, a tent and maybe some hiking boots and come along with us!
