1. The canton of Basel-Landschaft is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland. The Canton of Basel Land at the gates of the city of Basel boasts a variety of beautiful landscapes, impressive natural and cultural jewels. There is a lot to discover in the region of Basel, whether one travels in the footsteps of the Romans, cruises on the Rhine, or undertakes a biking tour in the Jura.
2. The lands of the canton Basel-Landschaft are part of the lands acquired by the city of Basel. Until the end of the 16th century, most of the canton's land belonged to the city of Basel. The country was economically dependent on the city, most probably because of the low level of education in the agricultural areas at the time. After 1830 there were political quarrels and armed conflict in the canton of Basel. Some of these were concerned with the rights of the population in the agricultural areas. They ultimately led to the separation of the canton Basel-Landschaft from the city of Basel on 26 August 1833. Since then, there has been a movement for reunification. This movement gained momentum after 1900 when many parts of Basel-Landschaft became industrialized. The two half cantons agreed in principle to merge, but in 1969 the people of Basel-Landschaft voted down a referendum on this proposal in favour of retaining their independence.
3. In Roman times, the area of Basel was a centre of Roman activity. There are well-preserved remains at the site of Augusta Raurica in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Around 200 AD there were about 20,000 people living in this city, now part of the much smaller Augst. The remains are on display in an open-air museum. The museum attracts over 140,000 visitors per year. Many of these visitors are schoolchildren from other parts of Switzerland. The site of Augusta Raurica includes the best-preserved amphitheatre north of the Alps, and a reconstructed Roman villa.
4. Liestal is the capital of Liestal District and the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The name Liestal was first mentioned in 1225, and the settlement dates at least from Roman times. The Depot of Archeology of Basel-land, the Frenkenbrücke (bridge), the Munzach which was a Roman farmhouse, the Roman aqueduct and the Cantonal Archive of Basel-Landschaft are listed as Swiss heritage site of national significance. The entire old town of Liestal is listed in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
5. On the Sunday night after Mardi Gras, Chienbäse is celebrated with a spectacular parade and bonfires, from which the celebration takes its name. The tradition goes back at least to the 16th century. Other towns in the neighborhood also celebrate in a similar manner.
6. In 2013, Basel-Landschaft had 281,112 inhabitants, 18.1% of whom were foreigners. Most of the residents are German-speaking. The most populated church in the Evangelical Lutheran Church was 43% of the population in 2000 and 32% of the Catholic. Between 1959 and 1970, the population in this canton increased the most; practically doubled from 108 thousand to 205 thousand.
7. The Jura mountain chain traverses the canton. The name Jura is derived from juria, a Latinized form of a Celtic stem jor- forest. The mountain range gives its name to the French department of Jura, the Swiss Canton of Jura, the Jurassic period of the geologic timescale, and the Montes Jura of the Moon.

Basel is one of the important cities of Switzerland. One of Switzerland's underrated tourist destinations, Basel has a beautiful medieval old town centre, a vibrant Carnival, and several world class art museums built by architects like Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Herzog & De Meuron. Basel is also rich in architecture old and new, with a Romanesque Münster (cathedral), a Renaissance Rathaus (town hall), and various examples of high quality contemporary architecture, including more buildings by Herzog & De Meuron, Richard Meier, Diener & Diener, and various others.
Located in the Dreiländereck (three countries' corner), Basel is a gateway to the Swiss Jura mountains and nearby cities of Zürich and Lucerne, as well as the neighbouring French region of Alsace and the German Black Forest. If interested in a trip to the country side visit Sissach a nice little town about 20 minutes from Basel. There are a number of things to see and do if you have a few days to spend.
This is the standard mode of travel for many within the city. Old Basel isn't very large and there are many narrow and winding side streets with incredible slopes. Basel has an extensive tram (light rail) and bus network.
The city itself has 19 quarters:
Grossbasel (Greater Basel):
1 Altstadt Grossbasel
2 Vorstädte
3 Am Ring
4 Breite
5 St. Alban
6 Gundeldingen
7 Bruderholz
8 Bachletten
9 Gotthelf
10 Iselin
11 St. Johann
Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel):
12 Altstadt Kleinbasel
13 Clara
14 Wettstein
15 Hirzbrunnen
16 Rosental
17 Matthäus
18 Klybeck
19 Kleinhüningen
Most of the old town attractions in Basel are in a walkable area between the Basel Zoo (just south of the Basel SBB train station) and the Rhine. Since most stores are closed on Sundays, it is a good day to plan to see one of the many museums, which are usually open. Basel and surroundings have over 20 museums, and many of these have a free opening hour at the end of the day.
Münster and Pfalz. Walk up cobbled streets and alleys from Marktplatz or Mittlere Brücke to Münsterplatz (Cathedral square) to see Basel's Münster (cathedral). Elisabethen, Elisabethenstrasse. St. Elizabeth is relatively underrated in Basel guides and maps given its historical significance. Marktplatz, Market square. Fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and pastries, flowers are available each working day. Considerably more vendors on Saturday morning.
The Gates to the Walled City. A (third) ring of fortifications around the whole old city was constructed after the great earthquake of 1356, to provide security for the then roughly 20,000 inhabitants of Basel. A number of these gates can still be seen at the perimeter of what used to be the medieval city: Spalentor
Basel prides itself on having more than two dozen museums, covering a wide range of subjects, from art - emphasized below - and architecture to cartoons and even doll houses. Among others, there is the Anatomical Museum of the University Basel, Berri-Villen and Museum of Ancient Art Basel and Ludwig Collection, Former Franciscan Barefoot Order Church and Basel Historical Museum, Company Archive of Novartis, Haus zum Kirschgarten which is part of the Basel Historical Museum, Historic Archive Roche and Industrial Complex Hoffmann-La Roche, Jewish Museum of Switzerland, Caricature & Cartoon Museum Basel, Karl Barth-Archive, Kleines Klingental (Lower Klingen Valley) with Museum Klingental, Art Museum of Basel, hosting the world's oldest art collection accessible to the public, Natural History Museum of Basel and the Museum of Cultures Basel, Museum of Modern Art Basel with the E. Hoffmann collection, Museum Jean Tinguely Basel, Music Museum, Pharmacy Historical Museum of the University of Basel, Poster Collection of the School for Design (Schule für Gestaltung), Swiss Business Archives, Sculpture Hall, Sports Museum of Switzerland, Archives of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, UBS AG Corporate Archives, University Library with manuscripts and music collection, Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten).

Basel and Murad - Laundry
This video is about Basel and Murad trying to do laundry. It's a hard-knock life in Moria Refugee Camp on Lesvos Island, Greece trying to get clean clothes. Some people try to clean their clothes in the camp - hard and tedious. Basel looks for a better solution - does it work?
BASEL (1)
Located in northwest Switzerland on the river Rhine where the Swiss, French and German borders meet, Basel is Switzerland's third most populous city with about 166,000 inhabitants. The city of Basel is a traditional Swiss bridgehead on River Rhine. A couple of bridges connects Grossbasel (south) and Kleinbasel (north). Mittlere Rheinbrücke built as a mainly wooden bridge in 1225, was the only bridge over the Rhine for several centuries. It was replaced with the current stone bridge between 1903 and 1905; length of bridge: 192m.
Wettstein Bridge (from the Pfalz / cathedral,) as well as Wettstein place on the right shore are named after Basel's mayor Johann Rudolf Wettstein. Thanks to Wettstein, Switzerland reached international recognition as an independent nation.
Elisabethen church was built between 1857 -1865. It was the first new Protestant church building in Basel following the Reformation and is considered the most important neo-Gothic church in Switzerland. The interior of the Cathedral is one of the most important baroque monuments in Switzerland.
The Münster (alleys from Marktplatz or Mittlere Brücke to Münsterplatz) was built between 1019-1500 in Romanesque and Gothic style. The Münster is open to the public. Basel Rathaus (on Marktplatz), was beautifully renovated Renaissance palace and is still in official use, but you can enter the courtyard on your own.
Tinguely Fountain is located in front of the theatre between Steinenberg and Theaterstrasse. Jean Tinguely (22 May 1925 in Fribourg, Switzerland -- 30 August 1991 in Bern) was a Swiss painter and sculptor. He is best known for his sculptural machines or kinetic art, in the Dada tradition; known officially as metamechanics.
Finding refuge inside Chiasso's church
A church in canton Ticino on the Italian border is opening its doors to the homeless who gather at the local railway station. The basement of the Church San Vitale Martire in the Swiss town of Chiasso has been turned into a temporary shelter for sleeping and washing. (tvsvizzera.it)
