Opera Atelier / Lully's Armide / Versailles 2015
Opera Atelier / Lully's Armide / Opening Night Speeches and Marseillaise / Versailles 2015
Co-Artistic Director Marshall Pynkoski's opening night speech:
Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great privilege for Opera Atelier and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra to be with you this evening – an evening which is dedicated to the victims of Friday’s violence. And what could be more fitting that a production of Lully’s great masterpiece – Armide?
On the surface, the opera deals with the conflict between the Muslim and Christian worlds during the first Crusade of the 11th century – but the overriding theme deals with the inescapable power of Love. By the end of the opera – Armide, the Muslim warrior princess and Renaud, the French Christian knight have been brought to exactly the same place as human beings. Love has brought them to a place that transcends race, religion and culture – Love is the invincible force that makes the protagonists most profoundly human.
In North America, we think of France as the most civilized country in the world and we think of Paris as the City of Love. No act of violence is capable of eradicating that reality.
We offer this production of Armide as a gift of love and support from Canada – to every person of every culture who embraces the core values of your beautiful country.

PreViews - Pynkoski Director's Notes
Marshall Pynkoski is co-founder of Toronto's Opera Atelier, Canada's leading Baroque opera company. Opera Atelier brings its production of Mozart's The Magic Flute to Penn State on April 18, 2013. Pynkoski, who directs The Magic Flute, discusses his vision for the production, which is accompanied on period instruments by Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He talks about staying true to the essence of the eighteenth-century masterwork while making it enticing to a twenty-first century audience. Pynkoski also discusses his decision to perform the comedy in English, why the show is more like a modern American musical than an opera, and why The Magic Flute is ideal for children and opera newcomers.
