Megatrends in Megacities: Stéphane Le Pelletier, Opera Gallery, Singapore
** PLEASE READ THE FULL INTERVIEW BELOW **
NAME: Stéphane Le Pelletier
TITLE: Director, Asia Pacific
COMPANY: OPERA GALLERY
CITY: Singapore
1. If you think of your job: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
You know, after living in Singapore for 13 years...I will also be in Asia in 2018! I wouldn't change for anything in the world. It is the best balance. If you really look at it, there is no reason to go back to Europe. I am sorry, but Europe became a supermarket. The energy level is much higher in Asia Pacific.
2. Imagine 2018 - 5 years away: What scares you most?
Nothing is really scary. No, not any fear. Life is under control. There might be some political change but even this is not scaring me.
3. Again, 5 years into the future: What's your greatest hope?
Singapore, 40 years ago, was a fishing village. Nowadays it is very sophisticated. I hope that it will remain as it is -- especially if we talk about the energy level. Singapore is a very peaceful place, and as a father I believe it is a good place for kids! This city is well preserved.
4. What is it that you do to make sure that your children become fit for the future?
I let them grow up like I did. However, they go to an international school -- not a French one. We are French, but we do not impose, we negotiate. And we listen, give advice, we travel.
5. What would you say: What object, what device is the best symbol for future?
Oh... the best symbol for future is the smartphone -- and people use it enormously.
6. What stresses you most in your everyday life?
Nothing on a daily basis. I am happy to be in the industry! There might be an event or a new catalog which could create pressure -- but not on a daily basis.
7. What products or services will your company offer in 5 years?
Maybe ecommerce, we always try to improve, i.e. the service. In this context, we will do more one-2-one events for the upscale market.
8. What should the ideal manager what should he or she be like to be fit for the future?
They need to understand the demand of clients. For their staff they need to provide direction and they need to promote in a proper way. For us, the website and the monthly printed catalog is key to communicate.
9. What role do Asian mega cities play within the global economy?
All the mega cities need each other. They all have their own specialties, their own assets. So, Hongkong is the biggest competitor for Singapore. In Korea, for example, people are very creative already!
10. In your eyes: Where do you see Germany in this context?
I don't know Germany too well -- but if Switzerland is Singapore, Germany is Hongkong.

Artworks & Sculptures (Salvador Dali and more) - Opera Gallery & Gallerie Bartoux @ ION Orchard
2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of Singapore’s Independence, and such a substantial milestone calls for an exhibition of equal merit. It is with this in mind that Opera Gallery are proud to showcase one of the most illustrious names in 20th century art: Salvador Dalí. Dalí developed his own symbolic narrative that is prevalent throughout his works; manifested beautifully in his sculptural works. Exquisite examples of these will be on exhibition along the esteemed Orchard Road, where monumental and museum sized works will be in situ for a full month, transporting viewers from reality to otherworldly destinations, inviting them to bear witness to transcendental creatures, anthropomorphic figures and warped timepieces, that truly exemplify Dalí’s vivid imaginings.
Celebrated globally, Dalí was a pioneer in his field and spawned a legacy that still burns bright more than a quarter of a century after his death.

Artist Interview: Tal Isaac Hadad | RECITAL FOR MASSEUR & LISTENING BODIES ASMR
Adapted from a previous work titled Opera ASMR, Listening Bodies ASMR is a collection of audio-video pieces created specially to introduce the concept of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). This curious phenomenon is described as a pleasant, tingling sensation triggered in the body by audio-visual stimuli. Visitors will have a thrilling sensorial experience as their brains respond to minimalist auditory and cognitive stimulations.

LISTENING BODIES ASMR is on display at National Gallery Singapore from 18 Jan–31 Mar 2019 as part of the Sensorial Trail that was presented at Light to Night Festival 2019: Traces and Echoes.

ABOUT THE SENSORIAL TRAIL
• 18 Jan – 31 Mar 2019
• Commissioned by National Gallery Singapore for the Art Week Edition of Light to Night Festival 2019
The Sensorial Trail is a series of intimate encounters with smell, sound and touch spread across seven stations in the Gallery. It invites visitors to explore, be more conscious of and experience the invisible world around us.
Norwegian scientist and artist Sissel Tolaas, known for her work with scent, presents a wall of five smells that encapsulate the unique scent of Singapore’s youth in eau d’you Who Am I.
Singaporean sound artist Andy Chia juxtaposes soundscapes of nature and urban environment with ethnic music in his installation Voices of Time. Listeners are invited to visualise their own compositions using a simple midi controller and listening tubes.
French artist Tal Isaac Hadad introduces the concept of “touch without touching” in Listening Bodies ASMR, a collection of sound-oriented videos. Hadad also redefines the relationship between body and voice in a performance installation Recital for Masseur.

Sonic Blossom by Lee Mingwei
In Sonic Blossom, a rotating cast of singers approach visitors to share the gift of a song within the Gallery. Each singer, clad in a custom-made costume, performs one of five lieder by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, accompanied by a piano recording. A gift from the singers to visitors, this performance installation kindles a moment of catharsis and joy between two individuals.
Artist Lee Mingwei developed the idea for this project while caring for his sick mother. He was inspired by the fact that they both found solace in listening to Schubert's lieder. Sonic Blossom has toured Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Boston, Taipei, New York, Sydney, Auckland, and Frankfurt. Its presentation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art was featured in The New York Times’ picks for “The Best Classical Music of 2015” and “The Best in Art of 2015.”
About Lee Mingwei
Lee Mingwei (b. 1964, Taiwan) received a Masters of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1997 and currently resides in Paris and New York. He has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions including his mid-career survey Lee Mingwei and His Relations at Auckland Art Gallery (2016), Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2015), and Mori Art Museum (2014); presentations at National Gallery of Victoria (2016), Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (2016), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2015), and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2015); and group exhibitions at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Asian Art Museum, Centre Pompidou, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and The Barnes Foundation in 2017. Lee recently participated in the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Viva Arte Viva, curated by Christine Macel, and is currently featured in the 14th Biennale de Lyon, Floating Worlds.
