Who is more alluring than Carmen, the dangerous gypsy heroine recklessly playing with the fate of her victims, and her own? Add the spectacle of tavern life and, above all, Bizet’s unforgettable tunes and piquant orchestration. How to resist such a package?
Georges Bizet was only 35 when he chose Prosper Mérimée’s short novel CARMEN as the source of what was to be his last opera. The earthy realism of the subject, its low-life characters and its violent conclusion were shocking enough to create a scandal which divided public opinion, but it was not long before adherents including Tchaikovsky and Brahms, Wagner and Nietzsche, recognised it as a healthy antidote to operas on mythical or monarchical themes. And seldom can revolution have been clothed in such seductive clothes and melodies.
CARMEN offers the perfect introduction to opera. Although the story was set in and around Seville, its treatment is essentially French. Opéra de Lyon’s award-winning production presents it against the background of a sleazy Parisian night club, Paradis Perdu, wedged between hotel and police station, so that the show recaptures some of the shock which electrified audiences at the Opéra-Comique 140 years ago.
Director Olivier Py is renowned for his theatre work, especially at the Avignon Festival, as well as his spectacular stagings of grand operas on the international scene. Conductor Stefano Montanari leads a gorgeous-looking and sounding cast in the idiomatic surroundings of the Lyon ensemble.
The result is an invigoratingly fresh look at perhaps the most familiar and popular opera ever written. What else might Bizet have achieved, if he had not died on the night of its 33rd performance, exactly three months after its première?

The performance of the Lyon Opera of the 2001 season, the French version. In the main parties, Natalie Dessay and Roberto Alagna shone. However, they did not sing together in either of the two recordings of this production: Patricia Chofi replaced the sick Dessay on the DVD recording, and Alanya was ill on the day of recording this television version. Gaetano Donizetti's masterful Lucia de Lammermoor recounts the tragic tale two lovers from feuding families, deep in Scotland's Lammermoor Hills. In this production from the Opera de Lyon, Natalie Dessay gives an absolutely heartbreaking performance in the titular role.

La représentation de l'Opéra de Lyon de la saison 2001, la version française. Natalie Dessay et Roberto Alagna ont brillé dans les soirées principales. Cependant, ils ne chantèrent pas ensemble dans aucun des deux enregistrements de cette production: Patricia Chofi remplaça DVD Dessay, malade, et Alanya était malade le jour de l'enregistrement de cette version télévisée. Lucia de Lammermoor, magistrale de Gaetano Donizetti, raconte le récit tragique de deux amants appartenant à des familles en conflit, au fond des collines de Lammermoor en Écosse. Dans cette production de l'Opéra de Lyon, Natalie Dessay donne une performance absolument déchirante dans le rôle titulaire.

Gaetano Donizettis meisterhafte Lucia de Lammermoor erzählt die tragische Geschichte zweier Liebhaber von Familienfehden tief in den schottischen Lammermoor Hills. The French tenor Julien Behr is one of today’s rising vocal stars. Voted ‘Révélation artiste lyrique de l’Adami’ in 2009, the year he made his international debut at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, he has become famous for his Mozart roles (including Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, recorded live at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 2016 under the direction of Jérémie Rhorer, Alpha 379). The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung recently wrote of his performance as ‘lively, with a fine timbre’, while Forumopera added: ‘Julien Behr’s Fenton is superb: though the French tenor has hitherto been especially appreciated as a Mozartian, here he confirms his aptitude for nineteenth-century repertory.’ And it is the French Romantic repertory composed between 1800 and 1900 that the tenor has chosen for his first recital disc. A wide variety of works (both grand opéra and opéra-comique), famous arias and absolute rarities make up this programme devised by the Palazzetto Bru Zane and Alexandre Dratwicki, who writes in the booklet that accompanies the CD: ‘Nothing is more difficult for a tenor than “finding his voice” in this imbroglio of genres and institutions . . . Already much admired for his charismatic vocal style and personality, the tenor Julien Behr is now the hero of a recital that revisits this repertory in all its variety, ranging from tenderness to heroism, from joy to melancholy.’
The programme takes in Ambroise Thomas (Mignon, after Goethe), Bizet and his famous La Jolie Fille de Perth, Cinq-Mars (1877) by Gounod, Benjamin Godard (Jocelyn), André Messager and his splendid Fortunio (1907), Delibes (Jean de Nivelle and Lakmé, with Gérald’s celebrated aria) and Le Chevalier Jean (1885) by Victorin Joncières (one of the first Wagnerians) among others. French versions of two extremely well-known numbers by Franz Lehár from The Merry Widow and The Land of Smiles – the title track ‘Je t'ai donné mon cœur’ (‘You are my heart’s delight’) – complete this panorama magnificently supported by the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon and conducted by another rising star, Pierre Bleuse. Julien Behr offers as a bonus a song by Charles Trénet (‘Vous qui passez sans me voir’), arranged by Arthur Lavandier, which holds a special place in his life. The tenor now joins Alpha for several projects that will focus on illustrating every facet of his talents.

Lyon, France’s third biggest city is a busy commercial and tourist centre in east-central France and a UNESCO world heritage site.
Situated on the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, the historic city centre forms a peninsula called the Presqu'île between the two rivers. Here you’ll find the main square, the Place des Terreaux with the impressive city hall and the fine art museum, the Musee des beaux-art de Lyon. Housed in a former 17th century convent, it is one of the largest art galleries in France. A few streets away, the Opera House is the home of the Opéra National de Lyon. The original 1831 opera house was re-designed between 1985 and 1993.
Take a stroll through the slopes of the old silk district, called the Croix-Rousse, which features medieval and modern architecture, to the banks of the river Saône. Here you’ll find the Fresque des Lyonnais mural covering an entire building. It depicts 31 famous people from Lyon and is one of 150 wall paintings in the city.
Cross the river to the district called Vieux (Old) Lyon with its impressive medieval Cathedral of St John, the Renaissance quarter of St Jean and quirky museums such as the Miniature and Cinema museum. In this district you’ll find examples of narrow passageways named Traboules. Unique to Lyon, these 4th century short-cuts pass through buildings and link the streets on either side.
Take a ride on the world's first urban funicular railway, linking the old town to the hilly quarter of La Croix-Rousse and the Fourvière district. This large hill to the west of the city houses the bejewelled basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Tour Metallique, a TV tower which replicates the top part of the Eifel Tower. In the Fourviere district you’ll also find extensive Roman remains, testifying to two millennia of urban settlement in Lyon.
Cross back over the river to the impressive science centre and anthropology museum, the Musee des Confluences. Wander through the impressive Place Bellecour the third-largest public square in France, past shops and lively restaurants.
Lyon is renowned for its cuisine and the world-famous chef Paul Bocuse originates from here. No visit would be complete without a meal in a bouchon – a typical Lyonnaise restaurant or a visit on the Rhone-side of the city to the sumptuous Paul Bocuse food hall, a gastronomic delight.
