St Mark's English Church
English-speaking Anglican services are held throughout the week at Florence's St Mark's English Church, but its role as a church isn't just religious. St Mark's has a varied cultural programme --it hosts opera concerts, lectures and workshops. It also works with local the local homeless and helps communities in India and Africa. LdM News met Father William Lister.
St Mark's Florence Historic Evensong Service
On 12 March 2017 the choir of St Mark’s Church in Florence, Italy, sang choral evensong in the Battistero di San Giovanni in the Piazza del Duomo. It was the first time a purely Anglican Liturgy has been celebrated in the ancient Baptistery and it coincides with the same unprecedented service at St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City tomorrow, led by the choir of Merton College Oxford.
This occasion represents the deeply-held desire of us all to express more fully the fundamental unity which our two traditions share in our common Baptism and we are extremely grateful to His Eminence Giuseppe Betori, and also the Dean and Chapter of the Duomo di Firenze, for this unique opportunity to pray together.

One of the most touching love stories ever - Rodolfo the poet and Mimi the seamstress find each other in Paris. Life as a Bohemian is difficult, but with help from their friends Marcello the painter and Musetta the showgirl, they manage. However, Mimi’s fragile health and Rodolfo’s fierce temper leads the opera to take a dramatic turn (performed by four singers).
Our operas and concerts have been delighting Florentines and visitors to the region for many years - we are now in our 14th season (please read comments about us on TripAdvisor). The performances have been critically acclaimed by the Washington Post and The Guardian newspapers - as well as by the many thousands we have welcomed in the audiences.
In the beautiful and intimate setting of St Mark’s Church, only a few metres away from the performers, you will be enthralled by the dramatic stories unfolding before you. The performances are complete operas, apart from one or two slight adaptations to suit the intimate setting.
With drinks available to purchase in the interval, an English explanation of the opera at the beginning, and programme notes in Italian, English, French and German, the stage is set for a wonderful and memorable Night at the Opera in Florence!

Saint Mark's English Church: A community for English Writers in Florence
The newly inaugurated writers' group for English speakers at Saint Mark's Church in Florence. The group seeks to offer writers a sanctuary where work can be shared, critiqued, and improved. Providing a sense of community to what is normally a very lonely business, the group sponsors workshops, talks, and meetings that encourage foreign writers to continue in their endeavours.
