Margravial Opera House Bayreuth - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site. It's an opera house and theatre built in the 1740s by the ruling Margrave and his wife, Wilhelmina, a great patron and participant in the arts. Despite the grand stone facade, the interior of the building is entirely done in wood and plaster, though it's difficult to tell. Everything is covered in elaborate baroque decorations loaded with symbolism, and looks absolutely fantastic after a recent five-year restoration project. Let's check it out!

This is my promotional video for the city of Bayreuth, Germany. I teamed up with Bayreuth tourismus to create a visual symphony of all the unique aspects of Bayreuth Germany.
Filming took place in the winter and summer seasons where I followed a local to the Bayreuth opernhaus, Bayreuth university, and even the Fabrik Bayreuth nightclub.
Bayreuth is a city heavily influenced on opera and the famous composer, Richard Wagner. I wanted to create a video that visually highlighted all the city attractions but made you feel like you were watching it inside an opera house.
My Bayreuth local took me to Markgräfliches Opernhaus (UNESCO Welterbe), Universität Bayreuth, Eremitage, the Richard Wagner Museum, Bayreuther Winterdorf, Festspielhaus, the historic city center on Maxstraße where we ate bratwürste, the Rathaus, we ate at Liebesbier, Dubliner, partied all night inside of the Fabrik Bayreuth nightclub, and finished the tour at the Bayreuth Volksfest.

RR7632B GERMANY OPERA 100 YEARS OF BAYREUTH
August 13th 1976 is the 100th anniversary of the
Bayreuth Festival, conceived and created by Richard
Wagner for the performance of his epic four-part
music-drama The Ring of the Niebelung. Wagner
worked on the score for over 25 years and, through
his patron King Ludvig of Bavaria, realised the dream
of a lifetime by building a special opera house in
Bayreuth for the performances. This film tells the
story of Bayreuth through fascinating old paintings
and other exhibits in Wagner's house and also looks
at today's festival.

The Bayreuth Festival (German: Bayreuther Festspiele) is a music festival held annually in Bayreuth, Germany, at which performances of operas by the 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner are presented. Wagner himself conceived and promoted the idea of a special festival to showcase his own works, in particular his monumental cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal.
Performances take place in a specially designed theatre, the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. Wagner personally supervised the design and construction of the theatre, which contained many architectural innovations to accommodate the huge orchestras for which Wagner wrote as well as the composer's particular vision about the staging of his works. The Festival has become a pilgrimage destination for Wagner enthusiasts, who often must wait years to obtain tickets.
In the 1920s, well before the rise of the Nazi Party, Winifred Wagner became a strong supporter and close personal friend of Adolf Hitler; her correspondence with Hitler has never been released by the Wagner family. She and other festival leaders were members of Nazi chief ideologue Alfred Rosenberg's Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur, which actively suppressed modernist music and works by degenerate artists. The festival maintained some artistic independence under the Third Reich. Ironically, Hitler attended performances that included Jewish and foreign singers, long after they had been banned from all other venues across Germany (including heldentenor Max Lorenz, married to a well-known Jewish woman). Winifred's influence with Hitler was so strong that Hitler even wrote a letter (at her behest) to anti-fascist Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini, begging him to lead the festival. Toscanini refused. From 1933 to 1942, the festival was conducted principally by Karl Elmendorff.
It was under the Third Reich that the festival made its first break from tradition, abandoning the deteriorating 19th century sets created by Richard Wagner. Many protested at the changes, including prominent conductors such as Toscanini and Richard Strauss, and even some members of the Wagner family. In their view, any change to the festival was a profanation against the Master (Wagner). Nevertheless, Hitler approved of the changes, thus paving the way for more innovations in the decades to come.
During the war, the festival was turned over to the Nazi Party, which continued to sponsor operas for wounded soldiers returning from the front. These soldiers were forced to attend lectures on Wagner before the performances, and most found the festival to be tedious. However, as “guests of the Führer”, none complained.

Bayreuth is a sizeable town in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. The town's roots date back to 1194.
The festival city of Bayreuth in Upper Franconia (Oberfranken) is relatively quiet most of the year until the Richard Wagner Festival settles in for 30 days every summer. Bayreuth features a wealth of impressive baroque and rococo architecture, as well as freshly-brewed Franconian beer in the local Biergartens. Although the city remains fairly tame compared to the much larger cities in Germany, the presence of almost 10,000 students at the University of Bayreuth means an active nightlife is not difficult to find.
