The Opium War - Lost in Compensation l HISTORY OF CHINA
The Opium War started as a dispute over trading rights between China and Great Britain. Regular trade between Europe and the Chinese had been ongoing for centuries. But China's trading restrictions frustrated the British who were eager to supply the Chinese people with the increasingly popular narcotic Opium. Circumventing the government's attempts to ban opium trade by smuggling and bribery, China declared the death sentence on Opium smuggling and refused to compensate British tradesmen for any losses. Furiously, the Brits sent out a fleet to demand compensation and end the Cohong trading monopoly. Fierce battles and attacks on the Chinese coast were followed. The Sacred Plants in the Americas conference was held on February 23, 24, and 25, 2018 in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. The conference had the purpose of building a bridge between indigenous and traditional psychoactive practices, psychedelic science, and drug policy through multidisciplinary and intercultural dialogue. In a context in which drug policy reforms are temporary, we consider it relevant to build spaces for discussion about psychoactive species and their growing multiplicity of uses. Moreover, it also sought to give voice to the indigenous people, who have been knowledgeable about psychoactive plants since ancient times, and they will be providing lectures at the conference.

[This Is The Greatest Art Heist in Chinese History]
Stockholm, Sweden. 2010. Passersby on the streets of the capital were confused and scared. Several cars in and around the vicinity had lit up in flames, and no one had any idea why. Police soon arrived on scene but they too were baffled with what they saw.
Now, several kilometers to the west, on the outskirts of the city, a small group of masked men made their way across the grounds of the Drottningholm Palace (the private residence of the Swedish Royal Family, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Their target was the royal pavilion situated in the southern part of the complex, which displayed countless works of historic art.
Once there, the men forced their way in through the backdoors, and went right to work. They smashed the protective display cases, and grabbed whatever items they wanted. This immediately set off the alarm system, which alerted the Swedish police.
Now, despite the alarm, the robbers remained calm, because they knew exactly where the police were. The burning cars (on the other side of the city) were in fact a distraction for them set up by the robbers, and they had fallen right into the trap.
Still, the police raced towards the crime scene, but by the time they reached the royal pavilion, the place was empty (the robbers were in and out in less than six minutes). Upon inspection, sculptures, chalices, plates and teapots - all invaluable items - were now missing from the permanent state collection of art and antiquities; and this wasn’t just a huge economic loss, but a cultural one as well.
It was later found out that after fleeing the pavilion on mopeds, the robbers made their way to a nearby lake where they were then picked up by a white speedboat. Though from this point, the trail went cold....
Imperialism: Crash Course World History #35
In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the sun never set on the British Empire. Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called primitive nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise.

Where Stalin grew up - From Sochi to Yerevan

Stalin was born in the town of Gori, in the mountains of Georgia. Stalin spent his young life in various places in the Caucasus. His birth house is still there, complete with a gift shop where you can buy Stalin snow globes. How do the Georgians look back on Stalin? Is it a hero or a villain, or both? Jelle passes by the grave of Stalin's first wife, the prison in Baku where Stalin was once trapped, and then went into the mountains. Even Stalin's hand can be felt even in the most remote villages.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

How people deal with depression in Ghana | VPRO Documentary
How do people in Ghana deal with depression? Is depression something that is discussed in Ghana? Is there even a word for depression or are people in Ghana avoiding the down sides of life? In the western world depression is more and more common but how are people in Ghana thinking about our way of facing depression?
After a burnout due to stress, Dutch director Sunny Bergman decided to investigate how people deal with spiritual strain and depression in countries that seem less affected by it.
Episode 1/3 – Ghana
Many Ghanaians do not know what depression is, and they certainly have no idea of what loneliness is. They live, work, sleep and eat together. If a member of the group gets depressed, it becomes a problem for the whole community, and they must find a solution together. Sunny experiences with the family of a friend that taking care of each other is also taking care of yourself in a way.
Does spirituality contribute to our mental health? Four out of ten people in the Netherlands suffer from depression, insomnia, ADHD and stress. Sunny Bergman studied how people in Ghana, Taiwan and Brazil deal with these psychological symptoms, in an often spiritual way. These 3 countries are just as modern as western countries, but there, traditional rituals are treated as powerful medicine. Does that approach work? And what is a normal mental condition anyway? There is hardly any country in the world that spends so much money on mental health care as the Netherlands. Where do all these mental problems come from? Are they diseases arising from abundance?

Biblical Series IV: Adam and Eve: Self-Consciousness, Evil, and Death
I turned my attention in this lecture to the older of the two creation accounts in Genesis: the story of Adam and Eve. In its few short paragraphs, it covers:
1. the emergence of human self-consciousness;
2. mankind's attendant realization of vulnerability, mortality, and death;
3. the origin of the capacity for willful evil, as the ability to exploit that newly-realized vulnerability;
4. the emergence of shame as a consequence of that realization;
5. the shrinking from divine destiny that occurred when shame emerged; and
6. the beginning of true history, with the self-conscious toil that life in history entails.
Impossible. Amazing. Breathtaking.
The only story that can perhaps match it in terms of impact per sentence is that of Cain and Abel, which we discuss in the next lecture: number five in this twelve part series.

Luke Syson: How I learned to stop worrying and love useless art
Luke Syson was a curator of Renaissance art, of transcendent paintings of saints and solemn Italian ladies -- serious art. And then he changed jobs, and inherited the Met's collection of ceramics -- pretty, frilly, useless candlesticks and vases. He didn't like it. He didn't get it. Until one day ... (Filmed at TEDxMet.)

La Dialectique Peut-Elle Casser Des Briques ? - version couleur inédite [+Subtitles] - HD 720p
La Dialectique Peut-Elle Casser Des Briques ?
Can Dialectics Breaks Bricks?
