# 19 Opotiki, Whakatane, Tauranga and heading for Hot Water Beach and getting lost Epic New Z

Day 3, East Cape to Hicks Bay and beyond… After dropping my bike, I carried on to Tauranga. Sprained my wrist, scraped the frame protector cap and slightly bent the clutch leaver…

I have just learned something... most of my resent videos on the big ride I did around the East Cape of New Zealand has VERY BAD Audio... which did my head in because before I left, I got a new helmet and mic... and expected awesome quality audio... But in watching the video on my helmet unboxing and setup... I have realised that I mounted the double ended mic right behind chin bar on the new helmet. The video shows that the chin bar has an air vent in the front... Now I have come to the realisation that I have mounted the double ended microphone right behind an air vent... so as the speed gets up, so will the air flow through the vent right onto the microphone... ok... I have moved it to a new location so should be ok now...

Off we headed along the coast to secret spot, anchored up, burley out, this spot was our only stop. With hunting and fishing around the area being a reason for locals to stay and enjoy the outdoors.

Life in Te Karaka, a small rural town on the east coast New Zealand.
A town that once was alive, once upon a time had a train station and also a thriving forestry industry that had sustained the region and those who lived there until the forestry was privatized triggering one of the changes that lead to a decline of the small town where today there are many empty shops and a reduced population. But life still goes on in Te Karaka.

Dad barred from son's school camp over gang affiliation

A Whakatāne man is upset over a decision made by his son's school to bar him from a school camp because of his gang affiliation. Skip Taitapanui was told by the principal he couldn't attend as a parent helper because he was an active gang member. Hinerangi Goodman spoke to other parents of the community.

CYF carer jailed 14 years for sexual abuse

A Child, Youth and Family (CYF) carer who sexually and physically abused six children in his care has been sentenced to jail for 14 and a half years. Taite Hemi Kupa was sentenced at the Whangarei High Court today, after being found guilty by a jury last month on 21 charges, including three counts of rape relating to two girls who were aged 10 and 14 at the time.

Te Ha Sestercentennial - First meetings commemorated

A GATHERING to mark 2017 events to commemorate the first formal contact between Maori and European here in 1769 was held this morning near the mouth of Waikanae Stream. Speakers stood near the site Rongowhakaata warriors performed a haka on October 9, 1769, while watched by Captain James Cook, Tahitian navigator Tupaia, scientists and marines.





Ringatu spiritual leader Charlie Pera and Reverend Stephen Donald led karakia (prayer). Kaumatua Owen Lloyd talked about intertwined bloodlines between Maori and European. “The intertwining of bloodlines is the beginning of a new race of people,” he said. Mayor Meng Foon said Rongowhakaata and Captain Cook could not have imagined a Chinese mayor in this region. “The world is our oyster,” he said. “It’s a beautiful clear day. When the first waka came here they would have said ‘this is paradise’.” Te Ha 1769 Sestercentennial Trust chairman Richard Brooking said each October the district commemorated the Endeavour’s 1769 arrival and the first formal meetings between Maori and European. Consequences of meetings “We also acknowledge the consequences of those first meetings. In 2019 we will remember the 250th anniversary of those events.” Gisborne Highland Pipe Band led the gathering in a procession to Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club for a shared breakfast. The second Te Ha Art Awards and Exhibition will be held from 5.30pm today at Tairawhiti Museum. The theme is the impact of settlement on flora and fauna, and four awards worth $6000 will be presented. Tomorrow night there are two musical events: The Maori Sidesteps at the War Memorial Theatre and the ExNE concert featuring nine original artists at Smash Palace. Sunday’s events start mid-morning at the Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve where Department of Conservation biodiversity ranger Graeme Atkins will discuss the ecology, habitat and medicinal uses of plants Banks and Solander collected from this district. Participants are encouraged to bring along 20 snails from their gardens in exchange for kaka beak seeds and information on how to grow them. From 1pm to 3pm on Sunday, Historic Places Tairawhiti Inc will hold its second First Meetings Korero talkfest about the first meetings here. Ten speakers will have five minutes each to talk about What’s in a Name? From 4pm on Sunday, Young Enterprise team Project Ataahua will unveil its commissioned public artwork in the Bright Street car park, opposite the War Memorial Theatre. The artwork was created by Nick Tupara and Phil Berry. An exhibition of sculptural works by Niuean Maori object artist Lina Marsh about the abundance and depletion of flora and fauna will run at various places in the city throughout the weekend.

Weekend around Whakatane

We travelled to Whakatane via Lake Rotorua to go on the White Island trip , but the weather gods had other ideas, so we explored the area. There was plenty to see, with a side trip to Opotiki and Taketakerau an old Puriri Burial Tree in a beautiful reserve full of native bush.

Day 1 Taupo to Hicks Bay

And so the last great adventure for the summer of 2014 starts. After being rained on from Cambridge to Putaruru, made it to Taupo late afternoon for overnight stay with Rod Forest and Dave Fleming.

Early next morning reduced luggage to 1 top box, picked up an RST Rainsuit from Honda Taupo. A last coffee then set off with full tanks and empty bladders (important for old men to get that equation right).

Cloudless day leaving Taupo, then the weirdest inland fog rolled in from Galatea and Murupara as we travelled through to Rotorua (ugh, hate that place).

Out around the lakes and through the countryside, then stopped for coffee in Whakatane. Good for the soul to be on another adventure with like minded blokes.

Gassed up in Opotiki. Change of plan. Rod (the thinker of the group) had a brainwave; Travel to Gisborne from here through the Waioeka Gorge, then anticlockwise up the coast to Hicks Bay. Tomorrow we'll loop back down to Opotiki and ride a second time through the gorge to Gisborne, then onto Wairoa and Napier. A really big figure 8. If ever there was an opportunity to ride this road, this is it (while the weather's nice). It's not about the destination - it's all about the journey.


Light lunch down at the waterfront in Gisborne the on up the Coast road with the ocean to our right and the sun setting fast. Beautiful up to Tologa Bay - NZs longest wharf claim to fame. Ruatoria reminds me of Mitimiti when I was younger. Truly wild but strangely comfortable. Chur bro. After that though boring rural.

Seriously have to watch out for horses left to graze un-tethered . Dave on point so far has avoided dog that's rushed out (nightmares of our South Island trip), an opossum, a rabbit and a cat. Then there's the longtitudinal ruts in the roads... but it's all part of the experience.

We're running out of daylight fast and with a tinted visor, only choice is visor up and tear streaked, wind-whipped eyes. Have to stay in touch with the guys in front for their headlights. More adventure. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Made it to Hicks Bay in the dark. Nice enough place seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Accommodation is small & sparse but comfortable for road-weary travellers. Darryl won the double bed, Dave and Rod in the singles out in the peasant area. Dinner; Chicken schnitzel, chips and eggs for me (I earned it so don't judge), steak, vegies and mushrooms for Dave and Rod - bad idea for Dave as we know and fear the results of mushrooms.

590kms today. Early start tomorrow. 160kms back to Opotiki, 145kms thru Waioeka gorge again to Gisborne then about another 250 odd kms to Napier.


Overnight at the Top 10 Holiday Park in Napier. My worst nightmare; Kids, school holidays and a Holiday Camp. Nah, wasn't that bad. Well rested. Coffee at Taradale in the morning.

Napier to Waiouru via The Gentle Annie. Wicked ride. Ultra challenging: loose crap on the corners, alpine at the crest, tight an twisty down to deep dips and high farmland. Busy day at the Army museum as you'd expect, being ANZAC day.

Threaded the eye of the rain needle till now. Rain squalls coming in on queue here at Waiouru and wind gusts are up. Made for a fun crossing of the Desert Road - opened up on us at the three sisters (25km corners). Super dark and angry Mt Ngaruahoe. Treacherous till just out of Turangi then home to Taupo without incident in more sunshine.

Tauranga Dive Crescent - Mission Cemetery - Pouwhenua

Tauranga Dive Crescent to The Mission Cemetery and Pouwhenua Garden. A few minutes waterfront walk to see the history of our City. From The Strand, the main promenade area of Tauranga City, although less than 2 km. total return, a leisurely walk with stops could take around an hour. Stop at The Art Shed, and check out some holiday shopping with a difference

view Tauranga Harbour, pass The Trinity Wharf Hotel and you will come to The Pouwhenua. Tauranga was one of the many Maori migration landing places

The Mission Cemetery is close by and is a special part of Tauranga’s history.

Independence was a powerful assertion of mana and rangatiratanga. Signed by fifty-two rangatira between 1835 and 1839, He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni was followed by Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840. In this conversation, Dame Claudia Orange and Morgan Godfery will discuss these two iconic documents with chair Carwyn Jones. Speaking to the history of these documents over nearly two centuries, the panel will also reflect on their significance in twenty-first century New Zealand.
